"The music is struggling with deep, intense personal emotional issues"
No.

And the Cure? Goth? No. And The Birds are dying video is a JOKE making fun of the whole thing.

SynthethicalY 06.11.2007 08:31 PM

The Birds are dying video was funny.

Here it is, for your enjoyment.

As far as I know, there are more indie hipsters than scenesters here in SF.

Richard Pryor on Fire 06.11.2007 11:28 PM

It's fuck up that people hate these kids so much, sure it's silly, but there not hurting anybody, wanting to beat kids up just because they have bad haircuts is terrible. All this anti-emo shit is just as annoying as emo it's self, and twice as ridiculous.

ALIEN ANAL 06.11.2007 11:44 PM

hahha at the report and haha at the emos

Green Magnesium 06.11.2007 11:50 PM

Those boys are so pretty. If I was straight I'd do 'em.

I concur.

Norma J 06.12.2007 12:59 AM

Making fun of Emo kids is like making fun of Michael Jackson. It's way too easy and cliched.

I always found nu-metal and other shitty scenes more annoying.

king_buzzo 06.12.2007 02:33 AM

Not as funny as this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1WKYmx4i1Q

ploesj 06.12.2007 01:10 PM

making fun of emos isn't very funny indeed.. the whole thing is just starting to grow here, ive seen so-called 'emos' since january or something. and now suddenly everyone makes fun of it. in my class, it's been a common joke to yell 'emoooo!' when someone says something that could be considered emo. but hey, they're all dumbasses.

Anngella 06.12.2007 01:26 PM

There was another news thing about emo, only they got it completely wrong and it was funny as hell.

atsonicpark 06.12.2007 02:05 PM

emo is the least annoying scene.

but it's still annoying.

emo as a genre has been around for like 20 years.

whatever shit music those bands were playing doesn't sound like the emo i remember when i was a wee lad...

bring on the sunny day real estate. fuuuuuuuuuuck. that shit rules.

at least the bitches are hotter in the "emo" scene.

Runnninngggg dowwwnnn
innnn circllleesssss.

Can't forget Rites of Spring, Saetia, and Mineral either!

Trasher02 06.12.2007 02:20 PM

Hell yez Rites of spring!
Swing kids and The Swirlies or awesome too.

pbradley 06.12.2007 02:30 PM

The Swirlies? Emo? Nah.

When I hear emo, I think Indian Summer, Moss Icon, and City Of Caterpillar. Real loud to quiet stuff. SDRE sounds more like alternative/indie rock to me.

Ah YES! City of Caterpillar and Moss Icon!! Love em.

macrodollar 06.12.2007 05:55 PM

I really think it's terrible how people feel the need to target emos in this way. If you take a look on Facebook it's filled with anti-emo groups and stuff like that, I just don't understand it.
I agree, some of the girls are very hot.

Washing Machine 06.13.2007 06:04 AM

God I hate Fox.

Leave off the Emos. Emo is already dead, just shut the fuck up and watch the Black Parade drive outta town in all its black-clad glory.

atsonicpark 06.13.2007 06:24 AM

nah, early sunny day real estate (lp2!) is the definition of emo. that and cap'n jazz.. promise ring.. yes, indian summer.. etc.

There's earlier stuff than SDRE, it's just bands like SDRE and Mineral took emo and slowed it down, hence given the retarded name of "post emo". You should all still check out saetia though, they're amazing.

I used to love them! havent heard them in ages.
Jawbox are another great early 'emo' band to check out.

Haha, interesting because Burning Airlines were one of my favorite bands years ago (post-Jawbox). To be honest, I barely heard any stuff from Jawbox and certainly don't remember it if I had!

jimbrim 06.13.2007 01:16 PM

I'm the opposite! i've never heard Burning Airlines.
Well, with Jawbox, 'Novelty' is the best album to start with. You can stream a couple of tracks here http://www.dischord.com/downloads

lungfish 06.13.2007 02:12 PM

i like the discussion in this thread.
as opposed to other threads where people sound like they're 14 or something.
good to see people talk about emo in a true context.

i have one jawbox record
and a split ep of burning airlines and american football.
man, all those bands were great.

EDIT: the split is Burning Airlines and BRAID. excuse me. haha.

I didnt even know this existed. I really like American Football and a majority of other Kinsella related projects. Although, im not so keen on the latest Owen record.

atsonicpark 06.14.2007 01:56 AM

jawbox were fantastic.

if you ever notice, and i'm no guitar wizard, but they don't usually play traditional "chords", they make up their own! see, i like stuff like that. they were a popular -- i mean, not that popular, but they were on mtv for chrissakes, and who else can say that, ethyl meatplow? oh... -- band who had noise parts in their songs and made-up chords and used very slight alternate tunings. LOVED how they mixed their albums too, two guitars that sounded like 50. and they had these brilliant, haunting melodies. just great. great band. savory is honestly one of the best songs ever written. there's... i can't explain it.. listening to it now, as this thread has prompted me to do, has made me realize that there's just something so dark and sinister in this song.. but it's so beautiful too. damn.

speaking of jaws, jawbreaker.. another band, i dunno if you'd consider them emo, i don't really know what you'd consider them... they were fan fucking tastic as well. love dear you, which just had some amazing riffs and snotty vocals. fucking. and 24 hour revenge therapy, which is some kind of classic.

as far as saetia goes, i'd imagine them and .. envy perhaps? .. are considered the quintessential emo"core" bands. i think they're great, i'm never that excited to hear them, because i used to be all into this kind of stuff back in the day (the SUPER LOUD RAHHHHHHHHHHHHH to the quiet notes with delay to the RAHH RAHH RAHHHHHHH RAHHH RAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!)... but.. though it's tiresome, it is reeeally fucking good.

so yeah.

emo wasn't/isn't a bad genre. lots of great bands. loved the reaaaally emo bands where it sounded like the most fragile music ever being played by insane people on the verge of an emotional breakdown. but i'm not sure why the people dressed up in tight clothes and weird ass hair is considered "emo" now. but again, i do love the ladies in this scene. i mean, riley mason! she's emo! fuck!

pbradley 06.14.2007 02:12 AM

Wow, Jawbox sounds straight up my fucking alley. I'm surprised I haven't heard of them earlier.

atsonicpark 06.14.2007 02:19 AM

yes! they were great.

think fugazi but a little weirder and more straightforward (yes, that's a paradox, but when you hear them you'll know what i mean).

opinions will differ on their best album, but start with "for your own special sweetheart". that album has so many gems.

Are you talking about Envy the japenese band? i havent heard much of them to be honest, but i've quite liked what i've listened to. I've only discovered them recently though, as one of the members guests on the new Mogwai album.
Anyway, you've inspired me to listen to more of their stuff.

atsonicpark 06.14.2007 10:41 AM

yeah, the japanese band.

you REALLY have to be in the mood for them.. they can be quite boring if you don't feel like listening to it.. get "a dead sinking story"

Jawbox bare no similarities to Fugazi what-so-ever, in my opinion.
Jawbox sound like they'd be more from Southern California than DC.

The band I'd compare them most to is Millencollin. Or a more kinder description would be - a watered down Hot Water Music.

atsonicpark 06.14.2007 11:03 PM

weird, because i have the entire hot water music catalogue for whatever reason and i don't see the similarities, except a similiar production style on hmw's last albums.

jawbox totally has a sub-dischord sound.. weird unconventional guitar sounds, very VERY solid rhythm section, odd structures.. straightforward but unconventional.

phoenix 06.14.2007 11:38 PM

its not emo anymore. its the same wanky subculture as its always been. they just listen to different crappy music. 9/10 of so called emo's just look like glam rockers.
