Sonic Youth in Holland (Lowlands Festival) and Belgium (Pukkelpop) in August

This won't be news to anyone who's been "following the rumours", but it's official now.

Jef Mertens 05.26.2007 05:55 PM

They'll be playing Daydream Nation so I heard at Pukkelpop.

pokkeherrie 05.26.2007 07:48 PM

It's mentioned on the Pukkelpop site as DDN indeed. Are you going?

Don't know what the Lowlands set is going to be yet as SY still has to be added to their site, but SY's myspace doesn't list it as Daydream Nation so it appears that it's not. But even if it will be then it's not that likely I'll be going either way. I haven't been to Lowlands in over 5 years and a return ticket to London is probably cheaper than the 120 euros or whatever a 3-day ticket for Lowlands costs nowadays.

Ironically, a friend of mine suggested a couple of months ago that we should go to Lowlands this year just for old times sake. I liked the idea of that, but I dont't really see it happening. First time I went there was when SY also played it in 1996. In an ideal world they'd do a Rather Ripped set at Lowlands and then add a DDN show at an indoor venue on the 20th or 21st before heading to Glasgow on the 22nd, but that's probably asking too much.

Jef Mertens 05.27.2007 02:21 AM

I'm certainly going. I'm trying to arrange so I can videotape the show although Pukkelpop's organisation is prety difficult in these things.

I haven't gone to Pukkelpop since 2003! I'm really looking forward.
Mabey I'll see you there!

Jef Mertens 05.27.2007 02:44 AM

They are closing the Marquee on Saturday night as well. That's so fuckin awesome!

sy2004 05.27.2007 03:39 AM

Damn, Pukkelpop is always when I'm on holidays

king_buzzo 05.27.2007 03:43 AM

Fuck, I can't go, like sy2004 I'm on holidays.

atsonicpark 05.27.2007 04:08 AM

classic.

king_buzzo 05.27.2007 05:01 AM

I know they are.

_tunic_ 05.27.2007 05:42 AM

erm, you guys are losing your focus ....

I am highly considering to go to Pukkelpop, my two favourite bands are there SY and Low. And SY is playing DDN, which they apparently won't do in Köln. Too bad they aren't on the same day, I don't feel like camping.

Would they consider an iRiver H320 as professional gear, or as an mp3 player that happens to have a record button?

_tunic_ 05.27.2007 06:19 AM

hmmm, I just realized that the last time I saw SY at a festival, I walked away after 10 minutes with all my fingers in my ears. But that was in 1991 (Ein Abend In Wien, Rotterdam) and they were using screwdrivers to mutilate their guitars:eek:
Needless to say that they were still unknown to me back then

pokkeherrie 05.27.2007 07:17 AM

You're older than me... ;)
Were you also one of the people who couldn't get into the main hall where Nick Cave did a spoken word performance and had to settle for watching that yet-to-break-through-band Nirvana demolish the stage in one of the smaller rooms?

I don't think an iRiver H320 would be considered professional gear anywhere. Can I ask you where you bought that though? I've been thinking about getting one (or maybe an H340) for recording shows but iRiver no longer have a distributor in Holland. There's the occasional online store that has them and then there's marktplaats etc or I could order it from abroad, but when it comes to electronics I prefer to get them from a shop where I can return it to if it's broken etc.

Pukkelpop now added to SY's myspace too. They don't list it yet as a DDN set so forget what I said about Lowlands not being a DDN set because it's not listed as such on their myspace.
The chance I'll be going to Pukkelpop is even smaller than the small chance I'll be going to Lowlands, even though Pukkelpop sells 1-day tickets and Lowlands doesn't. I think I'm already overdoing the DDN thing anyway if I'm really going to those three shows in London.

Damn it, you should've asked that last week. I could've asked Steve Albini about the incident at the Q&A sessions when Shellac played here a few days ago.

_tunic_ 05.27.2007 07:27 AM

3 shows in London? wowie
I only went one day to the Abend In Wien festival, didn't see Cave nor Nirvana, I think they played at a different day (at least Nirvana did). Went there actually to see Black Francis, as I was a huge Pixies fan back then (Hi Rappard :-D), but he was a bit disappointing, just solo. Magnapop kicked major ass though

Pukkelpop says they will be playing DDN, but perhaps they are wrong.

I bought my iRiver on eBay, picked it up myself in Germany. You will have to settle for a second hand, since they are not made anymore

edt: what the deal with the panties???

pokkeherrie 05.27.2007 07:55 AM

I'm sure Pukkelpop would know what they're booking... I'm 100% not sure yet if I'll be going to all 3 London shows or even one of them, but I do have tickets.

re:kim's panties - Atsonicpark was referring to something that happened about 20 years ago when Big Black and Sonic Youth toured together. Kim Gordon gave/threw some panties to Steve Albini both at Pukkelpop and in Amsterdam. Story never gets old it seems, as Albini later made a song about it with Rapeman.

read the parts under July 22 and July 23.

kim gordon mentions it here as well

guess i'll check for irivers at marktplaats and ebay then.

:D "There are two types of Europeans: the nice ones and the French."

hahaha :D

thanks for the links.
Don't think you'll have much luck on Marktplaats, checked earlier today already as I was looking for a car charger.

It will definetely be DDN. Got it from first source Chokri Mahassine, organiser of Pukkelpop. oh man I really hope I can film there. The gigs in London will be taped professionally and mabey Olivier ASSAYAS can tape at La Route du Rock. Would be awesome to have all these different people taping the DDN shows.

I don't find that sentence very funny. What's your problem with french ?
English are worse...

_tunic_ 05.27.2007 10:23 AM

Sorry Heckler, it wasn't meant that personally. You have to read where I read it from (pokkeherrie's first link, one day earlier). Besides, he's not saying that of the French, but the French speaking Belgians. And I do have to agree with that, all the French Belgians I've met were arrogant idiots. And all the Flemmish people I know are great persons.
Hey, if I had issues with the French, I wouldn't have spent most of my holidays there (on a small island with hardly any other foreigners). Or feel the need to listen to Serge Gainsbourg at least once a week.

thanks for the update Jef.

Trasher02 05.27.2007 10:48 AM

Dinosaur Jr. and the GO! team are coming to Pukkelpop too.
The best part is that I get to go for free!

HECKLER SPRAY 05.27.2007 10:51 AM

No problem, tunic, my post wasn't very serious, I knew you were kidding.
I don't really understand the controversy between the flemmish and the walloon, they live together since so many years.

yes you can. Normally it records lossy (mp3 format probably). But when you load a different firmware on it called Rockbox, you can make lossess recordings too. Another bonus of the Rockbox firmware is that it allows you to play flac-files.

EvdWee 05.27.2007 04:47 PM

the bands performing at pukkelpop on the same day as sonic youth: tool, nin, trail of dead, ozark henry, kings of leon, lcd soundsystem, cocorosie, the streets, lacuna coil, silver chair, the whitest boy alive, flip kowlier, loney, dear, the end, home video, heavy heavy low low...

i think about going to pukkelpop one day..

greenlight 05.27.2007 05:22 PM

wow. that's amazing. 40 GB? With a good mic, and such a space....nice one. I'll check that out (reviews and stuff).

is that difficult/complicate thing to load different firmware into it?

_tunic_ 05.27.2007 05:36 PM

they come in 20GB (H320, which I have) or 40GB (H340), there's also a H1x0 series, which is perhaps better, since it has as far as i know the same features, but is a bit smaller. Loading the firmware is very easy, just follow the steps as described on the site. Finding the correct firmware on the site is perhaps trickier, as they have different versions for different hardware.
the H3x0 has a built-in microphone but it isn't recommended for recording live concerts. I bought some microphones for $50,- which sound quite good in my ears, plus a batterybox for an extra $40,- which is needed to give the microphones some extra power.

Jef Mertens 05.28.2007 09:14 AM

Damn the calendar doesn't list bot shows as DDN shows.
