Copycat bands

Been sorting out my records and i've found a record by a band called Beatglider who are an exact copy of Pavement (imagine the fun) and they have song that is ok and would fool you big time. The whole album, down to the photographs is basically Pavement relocated in Leicester.

Savage Clone 04.13.2007 02:49 PM

Dustdevils are pretty damn Sonic Youthful.

Pavement in Leicester, what a concept.

The Horrors are pretty much a paint by numbers version of the Birthday Party.

and let's not get into all the pop punk bands that copied the Descendents.

LittlePuppetBoy 04.13.2007 03:09 PM

Are bands allowed to sue other bands that are obviously imitations?

It's not what i meant but, yes, they rip off The Birthday Party quite a bit.

soapbars 04.13.2007 06:27 PM

Im not that keen on the horrors but in their defense 'This is your.... my bloody valentine' by my bloody valentine was a blatent rip-off of the birthday party and had endless 'Junkyard" overtones.

and they went on to become something rather special, and one of the most original bands of the last 25 years.

MellySingsDoom 04.14.2007 04:17 AM

soapbars - kinda agree w/you on the firsr MBV LP, but I also detected a fair bit of Doors influence on there too.

Damn, I was going to mention them, and once again you beat me to it! Of course, I doubt even on this board many people remember the Dustdevils. You had to be listening to college stations that played Sonic Youth in the '80s to come across them, I think. They weren't awful or anything, but yeah, they were kind of like Sonic Youth with maybe a touch of Live Skull to make them somehow less accessible without being any noisier.

Glice 04.14.2007 05:53 AM

Datblygu = The Fall. Except they do it in Welsh. And are also very good.

the ikara cult 04.14.2007 06:14 AM

The Kooks = Cast, with a marketing budget

Iain 04.14.2007 06:19 AM

Gindrinker = The Fall and from Wales but not in Welsh.

Trasher02 04.14.2007 09:37 AM

I've been so curious to hear the Dustdevils...

I think that Spell sounds pretty Sonic Youth-ish too.

Yeah, but theyre damn brilliant!

Puddle Of Mudd = Nirvana

there are more...

Phlegmscope 04.14.2007 11:23 AM

FUN is basically a rapeman / shellac rip off band. But they're pretty fucking great at what they do. The band just toured US and recorded an album with albini, which supposedly sounds more like the jesus lizard this time.

I don't know. Someone posted a video of them once (was it you?) and I thought the video looked very much like the Birthday Party live, but I still haven't heard any original songs of theirs. I can't really imagine, going from that video alone, that they could have the Birthday Party pegged in any way.

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 04.14.2007 01:09 PM

Guns and Roses are Aerosmith wannabes
Aerosmith are Led Zeppelin wannabes

No?

nicfit 04.14.2007 01:11 PM

"No?" like "NO!" or what?

Everyneurotic 04.14.2007 01:33 PM

yeah, man; that's just wrong, gn'r are different (although influenced by) aerosmith and aerosmith are different from led zep.

only ignorant critics say that crap.

"No?" as in it's painfully obvious that all of these bands are easily distinguished from one another, making them seem out of place in this thread.

nicfit 04.14.2007 01:46 PM

Ok, so we agree.

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 04.14.2007 02:01 PM

I'm just saying, why listen to GnR or Aerosmith (except maybe their first album) when you can listen to Led Zep?

Everyneurotic 04.14.2007 02:16 PM

because they all sound different...

led zeppelin not only had a different groove and riffs, but they also dabbled in folk, country and blues...whether aerosmith also has the bluesy character (although zeppelin has more of a deep delta blues and aerosmith are more like chicago electric blues) but has more roots in glam rock and funk than zeppelin and guns have the punk shit going that separate them from anyone before them...not to mention aerosmith borrows more from the dolls and the stones and guns has more elements from the faces and early van halen to their sound.

Do you generally give random answers to specific questions? I've asked specifically if you know any bands that are an almost precise copy of another band, and not your opinions on Aerosmith etc.

ZEROpumpkins 04.15.2007 05:02 AM

SM said in the Slanted and Enchanted Deluxe book that that album spawned a thousand weezers, one of which was actually Weezer.

PAULYBEE2656 04.15.2007 05:03 AM

the fall= the monks
pavement=the fall
the strokes=pavement
everone in the last 5 yeas= the strokes

PAULYBEE2656 04.15.2007 05:04 AM

"no one ever made a living by simply ripping off mark e smith"- s.malkmus circa 1995

PAULYBEE2656 04.15.2007 05:06 AM

cooper temple clause= whatever band theyre teeshirt says at the time

PAULYBEE2656 04.15.2007 05:07 AM

dinosaur jr are a total dinosaur rip off band. i mean beyond sounds exactly like bug!!!! they even ripp off the band name.......... and they are a 3 piece... and the drummer wears glasses, and the lead singer is a lanky stoner..... bastards!

sarramkrop 04.15.2007 05:43 AM

I don't think that everyone sounded like The Strokes in the past few years. Also, Pavement have some Fallish sounding songs, but i'd hardly call them a carbon copy of them. I meant bands that would really fool you into thinking that you're listening to another better established band and not musicians that are heavily influenced by other musicians.

atsonicpark 04.15.2007 06:02 AM

relative ash were a deftones ripoff band; one of their songs is the note sequence to nosebleed backwards.

ZEROpumpkins 04.15.2007 08:08 AM

Yeah I wouldn't say Pavement were like the Fall. Or copies or anything. Fallesqueish i'd say.

ALIEN ANAL 04.15.2007 08:58 AM

Jet - 70s 80s rock bands

Nickelback - King Buzzo's most recent shit in his pants

MellySingsDoom 04.15.2007 09:07 AM

Fudge Tunnel were a little too much like Godflesh for comfort. Mind you, I did like their cover of "Sunshine Of Your Love".

i retract this commment, now loving the horrors after they put my band in their myspace 'top friends', any lesser act on my behalf would destroy the unwritten rules of 'da biz',

thanks

LittlePuppetBoy 04.15.2007 10:48 AM

No that I think about it, we are missing the most obvious ripoff band in the world.

Creed=Pearl Jam

PAULYBEE2656 04.15.2007 12:04 PM

im not saying that pavement toally ripped off th fall, im not belittling the love i have for pavement or the fall.. all im saying is listen to new face in hell and then conduit for sale.... thats all...

Silent Dan Speaks 04.15.2007 12:25 PM

Jet has made millions being a cover band.

ALIEN ANAL 04.15.2007 12:27 PM
