Im sure bands have covered sonic youth over the years but i dont think ive heard any.I vaguely recall Pavement doing Expressway, but thats it. Anyone have a list of bands and songs that covered sonic youth?

EvdWee 03.08.2007 01:37 PM

there's been a full Evol cover by dutch bands a few years ago called Retro retry: Evol.

Rob Instigator 03.08.2007 01:40 PM

Vlanetine records, before going kaput, released this cover of all the songs on dirty by their acts, online. check it
most are decent, some re great great, and a couple are lackluster.

I remember hearing somewhere that Beck did a cover of the Diamond Sea. Though I'm not sure. If he did, I HAVE to hear it.

Bal 03.08.2007 05:38 PM

is that evol cover thingy any good?
dont want to hear anyone playing shit covers of the best album ever.

racehorse 03.08.2007 05:40 PM

the only band i've heard of on that compilation is ZzZ doing bubblegum. they are a dutch rockabilly type band consisting of an organ and a drummer.
it should be interesting.

Flaming Lips covered Unmade Bed too
The Go-Team covered Bull in the Heather

I didn't think Pavement actually covered Expressway, I think Malkmus just sung it with Sonic Youth on the Lollapalooza 95 tour once or twice.

Rob Instigator 03.08.2007 06:29 PM

Indeed. According to this site (http://www.whiskeyclone.net/ghost/) Beck has also covered Silver Rocket. From the above-mentioned site:

"Beck during January of 1996 toured Australia as part of the Summersault Festival. Sonic Youth was another part of the tour. "To segue between the two stages," Beck covered SY's "The Diamond Sea" as a folk song (acoustic guitar and harmonica) on January 7, 1996. I'm not sure who is playing harmonica though...much of Beck's singing is at the same time, so it can't be him! The audience reaction at the singing seems to imply to me that he didn't do much more before when the recording starts.

Then again appearing on the radio to promote Odelay on June 16, 1996, Beck and the DJs began talking about Sonic Youth. Beck had done a short stint touring in Europe with them, opening their shows alone with his guitar. He said that one night, Sonic Youth asked him to join them for their encore on "The Diamond Sea." Beck added harmonica to their amazing 20-minute epic. I'm not sure which date it was when he did this, but Beck toured with them during March of 1996. He also played the riff on his harmonica and guitar for the radio listeners, but it was just for a few seconds."

They really did cover "Expressway" there's a recording of it on Emule. It's quite funny!

BTW I covered "Flower" with a friend of mine, check it on myspace if you want!

EvdWee 03.08.2007 07:29 PM

Sonic Youth 37 03.08.2007 08:31 PM

CHOUT 03.08.2007 10:26 PM

Camper Van Beethoven did a brilliant shitkickin' hoedown cover of I Love Her All The Time.

something 03.08.2007 10:33 PM

i know pearl jams covered them during some improvs at end of daugther live

Dead-Air 03.09.2007 03:08 AM

My wife does a pretty damn good cover of "Psychic Hearts" by Thurston. Of course Cat Power did a completely different version as well.

My favorite Sonic Youth cover ever is William Hooker's version of "Becuz". He totally deconstructs it, and it's awesome.

Second favorite: Camper Van Beethoven's amazing country version of "I Love Her All of the Time". I first heard that unaware in a record store when it just came out and it freaked the shit out of me. EDIT: Damn, Chout scooped me on that one by seconds!

The best track from Confuse Yr. Idols is Steel Pole Bathtub's version of "I Dreamed I Dream"

I remember reading a review in Flipside ages ago about a dance band of some kind covering "She Is Not Alone", but I don't remember who it was.

Bertrand 03.09.2007 05:34 AM

Thread Counts covered two SY songs in Detroit, 2004 (and two Stooges tracks too).
They did Death Valley '69 and Rain On Tin.
Here's DV69. I guess you'll forget it easily.

i remeber that somebody from here send a youtube link, where this guy from Blur (i think Graham is his name) covering sonic youth song (i'm not sure...maybe it was eliminator jr.).

thanks for the link Toko. interested to hear evol covered by others. knew only confuse your idols thing. wasn't that bad.

i'd really like to hear William Hookers version of Becuz, coz it's great song, coz he's great drummer, coz the way you're describing it Dead-Air

ZEROpumpkins 03.10.2007 02:18 AM

Difficult to do with all the alternate tunings. Many a guitar string has been wasted tuning my high E to an A or the like.

No Star 03.10.2007 07:08 AM

graham coxon covered one of his songs once, live... cant remember what song it was though.....

i just downloaded an out of print album by rodriguez called "swing like a metronome" from emusic (free promo membership i immediately quit). the last song is a nice acoustic/electric version of tom violence. rodriguez was matt ward (m. ward) and kyle field (little wings). i am a big little wings fan, and got this for his input, and the SY cover was a pleasant surprise. it seems that matt ward is doing the vocals on this one.

i do a honkey tonk cover of schizophrenia, which i started doing before cat power did hers. it's like a traditional indie-country song now.

I always thought that "Becuz" was an indirect cover of "Because the Night." Different lyrics, of course, but the main riff is very similar.

He does a good version its only like a minute and a half long though and its just instrumental. He'd do it as an opener after following sonic youth on the washing machien era tour.

Everyneurotic 03.12.2007 01:35 AM

check what i found:

"DEL/Green Monkey: Satan is Boring/Inhuman split 7" single (Jazz009, 1998)
First in a series of proposed Sonic Youth cover-song series by DEL, here with UK rockers Green Monkey. 444 copies on splattered green vinyl, with inserts and liner notes by Thruston Moore. Co-released with three other labels. DELETED."

del included lasse marhaug, i really would like to hear this.
