Computer geeks help me vol.??

I have a small but annoying problem with my laptop. It is to do with .mov files. I only need to hover the pointer over one and my computer seems to crash. The screen goes blank and everything closes. Anyone have an idea why this happens?

SuchFriendsAreDangerous 01.22.2015 04:40 PM

Your computer is dying.. you have my condolences.

noisereductions 01.22.2015 04:42 PM

um no idea. PC? Mac? Have you run the usual malwarebytes, antivirus sweep, and maybe ccleaner's registry analysis?

It's specifically only if you hover over mov's? No other file extentions? And it's not when you launch them? That's... pretty weird. But w/o knowing the specifics of yr system and any recent changes I'm not even sure where to begin guessing.

It's a pc and I've tried all of the above and there's no problems (except this one!). It only does it with .mov's and I don't even have to click on them, just hovering over it causes it to happen. It's been like it for a while now so I use my other computer to play/upload .mov's but I would like to find out and fix this issue....

noisereductions 01.22.2015 04:59 PM

what version of Windows?

Have you recently updated the OS, or video codecs?

noisereductions 01.22.2015 05:06 PM

There's the possibility that the creation of thumbnails from mov's is causing this issue - in that case I'd go into File Explorer, right click, View, and change the icons to something w/o a thumbnail...

BUT...

if you're on 8.1, I found similar threads that point to certain security updates:

http://windowsforum.com/threads/wind...9-help.200194/

Apparently if you uninstall those updates, and TURN OFF auto updates, it'll fix it.

stu666 01.22.2015 05:07 PM

win 8.1. I haven't updated it for about a year maybe. I think the problem has been going on for half a year or so, not too sure...

had a feeling 8.1 - do you have the Security Updates enabled to automatically update? I bet you got hit w/ those updates I linked. That thread will tell you which you want to delete.

stu666 01.22.2015 05:16 PM

I will try to remove the offending KB updates. Thanks for yr help!!!

oy, dude! you need the security update as soon as it appears.

i haven't used PCs in years now, but at some point you might wanna do a disk wipe + clean install, and enable all security updates automatically.

problem is the auto updates are all kinds of shit, not just security. SO if he shuts off auto, it will alert him when there are required security updates and he can just hit OK PLEASE INSTALL THOSE AND KEEP ME SAFE :)

I think I must have security updates on automatically and by the sounds of it that's what caused this problem. So surely I need to switch off automatic security updates, not enable them...

no no no wait... windows security updates are essential to prevent getting infected/breached/etc.

i'm referring to windows itself, not automatic updates to other software which can be anything

if you want to be more aware of these you could ask windows to notify you of updates so you can do them manually, but regardless, you needs those like you need oxygen.

why your computer crashes could be a bunch of different reasons-- from needing a disk defragment (does win 8 still need those?) to hard drive failures to memory problems-- i.e., all manner of hardware problems-- not just malware.

#1 thing i'd do is defragment (because nothing runs when files are too broken up), #2 is run all kinds of antivirus to make sure you're not infecto, #3 i'd run some hardware tests (used to be sandra, don't know these days) to make sure the machine itself is not damaged. #4 i'd run a disk check at restart, etc.

sorry if this is complicated-- i know you're not a computer guy but this is your lot as a windows operator-- just breathe deeply and be patient, it will get sorted out.

I haven't been able to defragment my laptop since I got it from new so I don't think win 8 needs that. I've run antivirus, hardware tests and disc check and all's well.

I must've been downloading all the updates to get this problem in the first place...

My problem is exactly the same as in the thread noisereductions posted so I'll try to remove the KB2975719 and KB2995388 files and see if that works.

Then I'll stick to updating manually I think... FUCKING COMPUTERS. Win 8 is crap.

Thanks for trying to help anyway!

it is. But I've had the Win10 preview on my laptop for a minute now, and I'm def gonna upgrade once it drops. it's free for Win7 users, and as a PC gamer, DirectX 12 is huge for me anyway. But it's basically the best things of 7 and 8 combined.

But yeah my gaming PC has 7, and it's still my fav. Unfortunately it will stop getting security updates in the near future. And trust, I hate 8. But I'm feeling fine about the jump to 10 having used it now.

noisereductions 01.22.2015 10:21 PM

Bytor that's more because both of those - especially Adobe, open doors to major malware. But in this case, he's swept for malware, plus that article I found makes it sound this issue is totally not malware. Good thought though.

stu666 01.23.2015 01:19 AM

The problem has been fixed! I owe you one noisereductions :) Also thanks !@#$%! and Bytor Peltor for yr advice.

EVOLghost 01.23.2015 09:04 PM

SSD's are so worth it. I have a 120SSD and a 1TB HDD on my pc right now....the SSD is just for the programs n stuff...and man...no waiting....whatsoever.

dead_battery 01.24.2015 07:53 AM

almost.

Basically MS took all the feedback from 8 and was like "ok we'll fix it" so instead of making 9 they're jumping to 10. So consider 8.1 to be 9.

Currently there's a tech preview which I've been doing on my lappy. They have announced that for the first year anyone w/ 7 or 8 can upgrade to 10 for free. The tech preview runs to April 15, so I'm guessing we'll get a release date around then.

I found this: http://www.eightforums.com/general-s...es-system.html

Looks like I need to reset the recycle bin but I will lose everything in it unless I use another program to try to recover the items.... :/

fucking windows you mean...

my 5.5 year old macshit still runs well-- it needed an HD + memory upgrade on its 5th barfday (it was too slow) and it's a bit banged up but it still holds. has lasted longer than my thinkpad x30 from back in the stone ages.

it's utter shit for games though.

noisereductions 01.26.2015 04:10 PM

^you nailed it. I'm sure Macs are great and all for just general computer stuff. But I've always been a tinker-er so I prefer the freedom of PC's. PLUS, my main use is gaming so it's a no-brainer. I'm one of those guys that's just doing the constant upgrade thing cuz I enjoy the hobbyist side. I'm pretty sure that my PC today is completely different build from a year ago other than the case and drives.

im a tinkerer too--- but i prefer the freedom from headaches haaa haaa haaa.

but seriously, since work is all about a smooth performance this macshit works like a charm.

just as an example this morning i had to scan a document on a windoz laptop. the scanner utility was shit, the printer control didn't scan anymore as it had before bla bla etc etc. hooked my old macshit glued with gorilla tape and i had a scan in seconds.

i used to build & fuck around with numputers but in the end the savings and/or performance upgrades didn't replace the lost productivity when time was critical.

but games-- games is another story. i might just build me a game box one of these days. i haven't played a new game in something like 3 years.

stu666 01.31.2015 07:40 AM

The recycle bin problem is fixed and I got back the things I had deleted by accident.

New problem: I can't upload anything from my laptop anymore using wetransfer but it works fine if I use my desktop pc...

Any ideas/help appreciated.
