Lana Del Rey ripping off SY?
Did anyone notice that the guitar riff at the very start of Lana's "West Coast" sounds very similar to SY? I just can't pinpoint exactly which song, but it definitely sounds like the start of a SY song.

![]() it does sound vaguely thurstonian but i wouldn't call it a direct ripoff maybe reminds me maybe of i dreamed i deam or more closely new hampshire? i think the song you're looking for is new hampshire from nurse. coin toss. SY in turn ripped off Fernet Branca for other things: ![]() truth. |
Yeah, I think it's New Hampshire :) I know rip off is a stretch, it's just a coincidence.
|
the other day i forget what i was listening to it sounded like a sonic youth tribute band i started laffing. maybe i'll post it if i find it again.
click on the truth link -- so good. |
i noticed this bbefore and posted it on ebony fantangos utubue vreview page
shakespeare got to get paid son |
I'd say it's a stretch to call it a rip off, but it's certainly reminiscent of SY's wack period.
|
I'm into it.

homage
|
Can't say I'm hearing it, just put New Hampshire on directly after too

it's a picking of string harmonics? an interval? a mix of the two? i think it also happens at the start of mariah (the hand cream song) & then recurs im sure sy didn't invent this. actually it's not that, it's some notes. maybe it was jim who played all this. actually i don't know exactly what thin ice is pointing at but i hear things it makes me want to say "fucking youth / working youth" it's there very vaguely. i don't have a name for it. ps west coast changes at about 1' and then return to the original at about 1'48" you'll hear that guitar clearly there. this time it reminded me of golden blue haa haaa haaa. |
i'd say it definitely sounds sonic nursey for sure.

Who's Lana Del What's-her-name...?
|
Not bad at all. I've listened to a few of her songs and she seems to be doing alright with pop music, isn't she? She could do with wasting less time on twitter hinting at her imminent suicide and write more good pop songs though. Maybe eating a few apples or a day preparing food for a dinner party would help her overcoming those thoughts? Is she known to do any exercise at all?
|
Maybe she's knowingly ripping off U2 and thus indirectly ripping off Sonic Youth.

If someone told me something like Branca's The Ascension (1981) was an SYR release, I'd believe it without question. Yeah, I know Lee played on it. Still. Branca could probably sue them if he wanted. |
Whoa, Kim retweeted Lana Del Rey's tweet at her with the tweet "You're a legit idiot". Anyone have any background on this? She wasn't replying to anything Kim tweeted, unless Kim tweeted something she later deleted.
|
Lana VS Kim. We all know the winner. Easy prey.
|
So Kim wrote some criticisms of Del Rey in her book, I would reprint the quote I read from Pitchfork but seeing as Kim had also gave Pitchfork a piece of her mind for singling out pieces of her book with no context for what she thinks is sensationalizing headlines for their site perhaps out of respect for her I won't do the same.
|
fwiw, that's not really lana del rey's twitter
|
![]() kim is a badass. |
sleepiness here, so give me a break: i've seen pics of Lana Ray's pretty face and never heard any of her music. so my intuition tells me why bother.
|
What did she say to Pitchfork?
What did LDR tweet for Kim to call her a legit idiot? |
Pitchfork posted an excerpt from Kim's book.
A fake LDR twitter called Kim a legit idiot. |
Oh man, this makes being an SY fan feel new and exciting again!

Sounds like Kim shoulda went full Beastmode, "y'all know why im here."

Has there been any blowback from him or the other people you mention in the book?
KIm: Not really -- I mean, not yet. I only mention Billy [Corgan] in trying to explain a sociological moment in indie rock. And I didn't want to write about Courtney; that was something my editor was interested in. With Lana Del Rey, it's all wondering what her persona is. She's interesting because she uses self-destruction as the next step in sexuality and self-branding. I just think her music is kind of boring. |
#JeSuisKim: Why Kim Gordon and Her New Memoir Will Outlive the Lana Del Rey Twitter Controversy
http://www.vogue.com/11368171/kim-go...a-band-memoir/ |
Kim's take on feminism is a bit outmoded. Unless, of course, feminism is about one women telling other women how they should live their lives. Younger girls dating gross old men? Garbage. What about older women who brag about younger men displaying an interest in them (as we saw in the Jezebel article). No fucking difference.
And Courtney never claimed to be part of "Riot Grrrl". If anything, she was (and is) something bigger and better than that. She's always been fucked up, sure, but at least she's been consistent. I don't think the same thing can be said about Kathleen. She was mouthing off, that's why Courtney punched her. It happens sometimes when people fail to mind their own business. Which, of course, doesn't make it "OK", but what is normal isn't always widely regarded as "OK". People are violent. And did the Pumpkins ever claim to be punk rock? Sure they suck, but did they ever claim to be punk rock? Are Sonic Youth, (let's be really technical about this...) punk rock? Why is Kim an authority? Did she start punk? Did she partake in jumpstarting what would become known as punk? Was she thrashing about some stage at the same time as Patti (infinitely cooler than any woman mentioned in this post)? No. I mean shit, Lydia was active before Kim and even Lydia never claimed to be punk rock. Sure Kim shaped things and means a lot of good things to a lot of boys and girls in this world. But I don't think, at the end of the day, things would be much different in the world of feminist rock had Kim never existed. There were plenty doing it before her...some of which who are still at it and who still kick ass. And holy shit why do these people still use the term "punk" as if it has some value. Is punk rock Sex Pistols boxers being sold at Target? I mean, TECHNICALLY the Pistols were and are more punk rock than Sonic Youth...if only because they existed as a punk rock band some years before Sonic Youth was even an idea. Are Sonic Youth more punk rock than the Pistols because I can't buy their tees at Target? Stupid. Niagara was doing the same exact thing Kim would go on to do years before Kim would do it. Check out the new Destroy All Monsters box set. It's amazing. in fact, my GF thought she was listening to some early SY stuff when I first put it on (she's not really into SY too much). Guess what...it happened way before Kim was doing anything music related. This whole this is so stupid. |
