mark from pavement to play bass for the tour!
just revealed on the 6music interview! mark from pavement will fill in jims bass parts in the upcoming tour!! more soon!!
what?
Holy Hell. Is this for real?
Lame. |
Yeah, Thurston mentioned this. Basically he'd just play bass parts on Kim songs, like Jim did, so Kim can flail spastically to whatever song she's singing.
i'm calling bullshit. when does thurston ever talk straight-up.
are they starting another trilogy too? |
to me it sounded like a joke :)
Didnt sound like a joke to me, it seemed believable.
Edit: Its a fairly mainstream station so i dont imagine a great deal of people would know who mark from Pavement was, and almost as few who Thurston was. So if it was a joke it would be lost on virtually everyone. |
i hope it is a joke
Why? It couldnt be terrible... could it?
makes sense. he did all the free kitten stuff so they know he is tried and tested.
but who will bartend in the west village now?
ps. this would be great news if you ask me |
............hm......i'd prefer to see them as a 4-piece , but i also think that sy would "hire" only someone they're confident in...kim worked with him, eventually he proved good enough,i guess.the strange thing in my mind is_____i'll take no pictures of him if i get to see them in the upcoming tour...don't know why,but i felt jim as "one new sonic youth member",and i feel mark as "the guy who plays the bass for them on tour...".....
This isn't some session player its Mark Ibold. New Yorker, music fan, friend of Malkmus and other woodland creatures.
you're right silverpress, that's the reason why i said "the strange thing in my mind is"..etc.maybe it's just because he didn't take part in the recording of the album...or did he?
they will get spiral stairs to tend bar.
No I don't think he had anything to do with the recording process. I'd like Mark to tour. He's a booster and I'm sure he'd be fun to tour with.
Have any of you guys read Lee's Lollapalooza journal from '95 where he writes about how impressive Pavement were on the tour?
PAVEMENT RULED!
Mark Ibold on the bass that's cool. give Kim a guitar and have her ROCK. that damn rickenbacker is heavy |
wasn't the whole point of jim leaving that kim was back "rocking the bass"?
plus, jim did a whole lot more than just play bass i think this is an instance when it's not bad or good, it's just news and that's it. i'm pretty sure they will sound great. remains to be seen and heard |
on interview, the band stressed that kim was back playing bass
that was my point |
Quote:
we need the source of that info please :) |
yeh, the source is thurston himself. he seemed pretty serious to me, id be very surprised if it was byron coleyesque joke. most people who listen to the show will have a good idea who pavement and sonic youth are...
holy hell that's pretty damn cool

I thought you would be totally distraught by the news. |

Word, I love pavement. Ugh I REALLY hope they come to Canada sometime this summer and get the tour dates out soon, because I'd have to save a good $300.00 for transpo/ merch/ tickets. |

thank you veeeeeery much |
Kim is rocking the bass on RECORD. she has stated that thaat heavy ass bass is fucking up her hands and wrists. her arthritis is getting to where rocking the bass every night in concert is painful, so fuck that. she can siing and rock forth on guitar, which is much easier on the hands.
KIM I LOVE YOU don;t listen to these bastards naysayers they have pussies for ears! robstagator |
wow, did kim really say it's fucking her up? that would be the first time i've heard any of them say something along the lines of getting to old...
this is supposed to be mildly humorous. i hope they go on until the die. that is, very old. i don't want them to die. |
Great news, I think
interesting, free kitten almost back together. mark i9s one cool guy, met him years ago and he is totally funny. not suprised their hectic schedule is beginning to take its toll on the wrists and joints i mean, id be fucked if i had to do their amount of work...and im only 31!!!!
great news, and you can kinda tell thurst isnt taking the piss..... |
Really? Cool.....now Free Kitten just needs to get back together:D
For the Pavement haters, don't get all worked up. He's just going to play what he's told. He's not going to be the new member on the next album like Jim.
wouldn't it be awesome if sy played summer babe on tour?
of course it's not going to happen i didn't know sy NEEDED a touring bassist; that's a big difference from WANTING a fifth member |
I was looking to something...
Does it mean from now on Sonic Youth will need a new bassist for every show they do? |
I wouldn't describe myself as a Pavement fan, particularly, but it's an okay choice, I reckon. And who knows - it might be the start of either regular appearances, another fifth member or maybe changing guest performers, all of which could be interesting and not neccessarily bad.
He'll probably play a little guitar too (maybe). I can't really see Kim playing NO bass.
I got the impression that he would only be playing bass on songs like "Drunken Butterfly" and "PCH" where Kim is singing and doing other stuff so she doesn't have to worry about it.
id guess hed play bass on songs where kim has quite a prominent guitar part, such as new hampshire, and mariah carey...
Mark sang once I believe on the last Pavement tour, a rendition of Carrot Rope. Pavement was one salty band if you ask me. Pure soul and sarcastic wit. Lots of good guitar and Bob Nastanovich? What the fuck one of the coolest drummers in Rock history.
