Who is the greatest genius of all time?

Einstein?
Da Vinci?
Michelangelo?
Newton?
Tesla?
Bell?
Edison?
Socrates?
Shakespeare?
Dante?
Milton?
Dostoyevsky?
Cervantes?
Goethe?
Nietzsche?
Bach?
Beethoven?
Descartes?
Aristotle?
Galileo?
Tchaikovsky?
An ancient architect?
Hawking?
Hitchcock?
Nabokov?
Kubrick?
Kierkegaard?
Sartre?
Jesus?
Mohammed?
Buddha?

(keep in mind there are many other choices to be had here, these are just some suggestions)

Don't rule out the great artists because of lack of contributions to
science. I think a great artist must have an abnormally well grasp of the universe (for a human that is) to really be able to make beautiful art.

Give some reasons too. I'm not sure I have an opinion as of yet, but I'd be tempted to sway towards a philosopher or an artist(writer, painter, composer) over a man of science.

Definitely not Tchaikovsky. Other than that, I have no idea.

_slavo_ 02.08.2007 06:13 AM

Da Vinci in my opinion.

and stoned.

Tokolosh 02.08.2007 06:24 AM

Difficult to say 'cause there are many people in different fields, that have done great things for mankind.
In the last 50 years I'd have to choose electrical engineers Jack Kilby and Robert Noyce for inventing the silicon chip (1961).
Our lives wouldn't be the same, if it weren't for them.

jon boy 02.08.2007 06:27 AM

i chose leonardo because he was the best all rounder.

fishmonkey 02.08.2007 06:58 AM

i would have to say....

myself.

but then.. i'm biased.

sonicl 02.08.2007 06:59 AM

Certainly not Steve Mcfuckinglaren. Jose Mourinho, methinks.

(Do excuse me, I'm just trying to wind up the fishmonkey :p)

You've managed to wind up the Danny, too, you Chelsea bastard!

In answer to the question, it's Jesus. I don't think anyone else has had that impact on western society for a good 2000 years.

porkmarras 02.08.2007 08:05 AM

Yawn.

sonicl 02.08.2007 08:13 AM

Is that Dave Yawn or Sean Yawn?

EDIT - Pete Yawn?

racehorse 02.08.2007 08:49 AM

jesus was certainly a shrewd buisnessman.

sonicl 02.08.2007 08:52 AM

Jesus had God on his side to give him all the answers. Surely a genius has to find the answers for himself?

sonicl's jesus post^:
I always took that apllication and directed it towards Batman and the rest of the so called superheroes, I mean all Batman had were incredibly innovative gadgets, but at his essence he was merely a mortal human with no special power. Every other hero had a special power(s) and simply used them to help people, which, is a noble act, but Batman was a true hero because of his mortality.

racehorse 02.08.2007 09:31 AM

therefore - batman is the greatest genius of all time.
so that's settled then!!

ALIEN ANAL 02.08.2007 09:36 AM

fuck yeh i go batman too.

In a vague vein of being a devil's advocate, I'd say Bill Gates belongs on the list of significant contributors. With his technological innovation and business savvy (he basically smoked Apple, and made PC technology available to the masses), he has literally changed the basic mechanics of modern society, and revolutionized the processing and dissemination of data. You corporate-bashing folk may knock him, but one must give credit where it's due.

Buckminster Fuller

atari 2600 02.08.2007 11:19 AM

When Buckminster Fuller came to Canada, he kept asking the same question:
“Have you ever really considered how much your buildings weigh?”
The Canadians took this very seriously. (Hey, we never thought of that!)
He showed them plans for domed cities, cities with no basements, no foundations.
Cities that could be moved in a minute.
Portable cities.
Portable towns.

He said;
Think of it as camping out.
Think of it as one big tent.
He said:
Think of it as
The Big Top ... spinning ... lightweight ... portable.

He said: Think of it as
The Big Top.
Spinning ...
Lightweight ...
Flyaway ...

He said:
Think of it as the
Big Top.

You people don't know too much about Einstein, do you? Or is that the part you do know about, you don't understand too terribly well? Or is it that your natural disposition is just that creepy? Yeah, that's probably it. It's monstrously pathetic, by the way, to live in this present day and age and not fully grasp the significance of Albert Einstein.

atari 2600 02.08.2007 02:53 PM

Of course, Manhunter is the prequel to Silence of the Lambs.
The new Hannibal Rising movie I suppose would be a pre-prequel, then? haha

A friend and I were up in C-Ville a few years back (this was when I still lived in Athens) and, as a reporter for Flagpole magazine in Athens, he got to attend Anthony Hopkin's press conference at the Virginia Film Festival for Hannibal. So, my friend asked me beforehand what question(s) he should ask, and since the theme of the festival that year was "Animal Attractions," http://www.vafilm.com/2000/ I suggested he ask him about any pets (or livestock---thought that would get a laugh) he owned, and then follow it up with a serious question about what he thinks of Hollywood's practice of banking on sequels and what his thoughts were on motion picture sequels, in general. As predicted, the first question was a hit and Hopkins told about his dogs and bird, and then my friend aggressively was able to ask the follow-up as well and the mood turned in an instant. Sir Anthony was quite flummoxed, and, after a slight pause of momentary uncertainty and mumbling something about "not being Tom Cruise," he just flat-out ignored the question and turned his attention elsewhere to the next reporter.

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 02.08.2007 02:55 PM

I liked Red Dragon, but never saw the original version- Manhunter. Why's it better?

The Lung 02.08.2007 02:57 PM

oh yeh I've seen red dragon, I thought it was pretty good. Have you seen Dead Man with Johnny Depp? Some Indian guy thinks that he is William Blake, I thought it was really good.
