Tour Songs '06

It's been almost eight years (I think) since the last time Sonic Youth toured as a four-piece. So they're about to hit the road again for the first time in this millenium with this current (classic) configuration. What songs do you think-they'll / want-them-to play?

I think it's about time they start putting some Washing Machine into heavy rotation. I know they've played "Skip Tracer" a few times on the last tour, but how about "The Diamond Sea"? "Washing Machine," "Saucer-Like," "Unwind"? All good songs.

Also, I was wondering what they were gonna do about the Jim songs now that he's not there. Can they still play "Disconnection Notice"? What about "Dude Ranch Nurse"? Are we never going to hear "Unmade Bed" live again?

doctor dan 04.17.2006 12:52 PM

id imagine a lot of the recent songs will have to be avoided, or at least drastically changed. stones, for instance, partially revolves around jims part at the end. a lot of the songs with intertwining guitar parts will be hard to reproduce (ie rain on tin/stones/disconnection notice). im gonna guess maybe theell be some washing machine songs back on the list, as they are closest to the bands current style whilst still having 4 parts. also, im gonna hazard a guess that theyd revive some of the punkier songs from around dirty/ejstns era to go with (from what people have been saying) the more song based styles of the new record. OR theyre gonna go in the other direction and play more freeform/ experimental songs from the daydream/sister/evol era to compensate.

i have no idea but im looking forward to it!

AllHandsOnTheBigOne 04.17.2006 12:53 PM

I just want to hear "Brother James" live. One time. That's all I ask.

Danny Himself 04.17.2006 01:13 PM

Bar 'Bull In The Heather', I don't think any EJSTNS tunes have been played since 1995, and Washing Machine tunes are a bit rare these days too. Personally, I'd like more Goo and Dirty tracks, especially 'Titanium Expose' as a big closer. That'd be killer.

I suppose the band will dip into ATL tunes though.

No Star 04.17.2006 01:23 PM

Oh god if they dont play disconection notice i will be so upset. surely a lot of stuff from Rather Ripped will be played this year?

samuel 04.17.2006 01:27 PM

They should play every single song they've written --
Wildflower Soul two times because it's my favorite.

Yeah, I saw them play that once. It really really rocked... It was even better because they played white cross right before it... mmmm... white cross-brother james

doctor dan 04.17.2006 03:16 PM

well the setlists are usually most of the current album, and then about as many old songs. usually 2 or 3 of the songs have extended outros, and the last song always has a prolonged noise section. each tour they seem to unearth a couple of old songs that they havent played in years. last time round, they revived a few sister era songs (PCH in particular), and expressway made a BIG return. that was mainly due to paper cup exit being in EG*EG*EG*, so itll be interesting to see the tunings for the new song.

Fuck, really? I saw them on that tour and I don't remember them playing "Expressway"! That would've been amazing!

Toxa 04.17.2006 03:53 PM

I think they will continue to play 'stones' & 'new hampshire' from nurse... also I want them to continue playing burning spear!

doctor dan 04.17.2006 04:02 PM

they played PCH and expressway as the encoure for a lot of the tour (2004), like when i saw them in brixton

If i'm not mistaken i think that thurston plays in the the "key of G tuning" (CGDGCD) on most of the new songs, which may or may not have an impact on what other songs they play.

I think they played "Kool Thing" on the Murray Street tour. It might've been the Nurse tour, but I know I saw them play it and I got really excited, what with Kim dancing about and Lee + Thurston going nuts. It'd be pretty fun if they played some Goo, actually. I'd probably get a much bigger kick out of "Dirty Boots" than I realize. And yeah, "Titanium Expose" is wild. They should totally close with that.

Then do "The Diamond Sea" as an encore.

it be nice if they still play stones and new hampshire but i dunno if they will, especially stones, jim had a "crucial" guitar part that has some lead lines that really shaped the song, new hampshire jim plays bass, is it a song that could go bass-less... eh perhaps...

DoubleNickels 04.17.2006 04:10 PM

NYC ghosts and Flowers! PLEASE!!!

SecretGirl13 04.17.2006 04:21 PM

I want them to play Titanium Expose too Danny Himself, I yelled it last time I saw SY but it didn't work. When I saw them on the Sonic Nurse tour, I remember they played Kool Thing and Bull in the Heather so they might give those a rest this time round.

I wouldn't mind hearing Diamond Sea, but I'm not a big fan of the rest of Washing Machine. I'd like to hear:

Death Valley 69

createsounds 04.17.2006 10:42 PM

i just hope they EXTEND THE SET!!!!!!!
to more than the ...
12
2
1
... they should jam
@ very least 1 or 2 songs off EACH album
having like a 3 hour show.
..... i mean come on they been a round for like 25 years
and they definately got enough songs
.... then i again it would be cool if they..
jammed their regular style set and then did a big long improv... in the style of syr6 ...
..... hopefully but not likely

what do you guys think?

velvetmonkey 04.17.2006 11:06 PM

I saw they playing PCH and Expressway, here in Brazil, and it fucked my head. I love these songs!

Alex's Trip 04.17.2006 11:07 PM

Anything will work for me, as long as I see them a do a full set, not opening for anyone. I want to see them again. That's all really.

Danny Himself 04.18.2006 08:22 AM

Thurston mentioned this morning they're working on some 'new old songs', so likely is they'll be ones that haven't been played that much, i.e EJSTNS and Washing Machine tracks.

krastian 04.18.2006 01:17 PM

Did you hear that on the radio or something?

I think it'd be better if they play a 2 hour version of Inhuman, from the same album ...

I'd like them to play I Dreamed I Dream...

Just for the record, that tuning is referred to as "Low C". It may be a G tuning by music theory standards (???) or it may not. Sharing the knowledge...

Neongod 04.18.2006 02:51 PM

As for the setlist, expect most if not all of Rather Ripped, a few songs from Nurse, and about 6 older songs that get rotated...2 or 3 per show. Rumors are already out of someone "outside" playing bass for the tour.

that would be cool .. but i would "rather" see sonic youth play as a four piece
making dew with what they got ......
..swithin up between 3guitars &/or 2guitars and a bass ..washing machine style
they can easily make the songs sound good evn if there way different than they were recorded ....
I MEAN ISNT THAT PARTIALLY WHAT SONIC YOUTHS LIVE REP IS ABOUT !!
BEIN ALL WIERD, FREAKIN OUT, AND ROCKIN ALL CRAYZ LIKE

hellotwentyfifteen 04.19.2006 12:13 AM

good pun "create sounds"

i would kill someone

ifront of their own mother

to see washing machine live

has anyone heard the version from "live from the sea, aka haluciogenic preserve"

its quite possibly the greatest thing my ears have ever touched

man just thinking about it makes me shiver and cry a little bit

hellotwentyfifteen 04.19.2006 12:19 AM

i should also ad that according to the sonic youth song data base, they havent played any wahsing machine songs other than skip tracer since 1995

i would also kill a puppy to see them play "in the mind of the bougiuos reader". there are very few things that would make me mosh, but that sooooooo would.

also theyve aparently never played wishfufilment live ever

Angel Dust 04.19.2006 02:55 AM

Awesome

I couldn't agree more! Yeah, more Dirty, Goo, and Confusion is sex stuff, I would kill for a live performance of "Purr", "Brother James", and "Titanium".

I am so bummed that they are touring with Pearl Jam, though and I am afraid they won't be heading back to CA for this tour, since they are already doing a shit load of shows here.

pao-lino 04.19.2006 04:04 AM

haven't they talked about a retrospective tour?
that would mean at least one song (more or less) from every album...
but I can't expect what the new songs will sound live! kim songs will rock!
I have a bootleg in portugal right before ejstns came out, and they played a few songs from sister... so, since the new one has been recorded in the same studio, logic suggests they'd play some ejstns!

I'd like to see brother james live too... I know they played it a lot, bit at the 2 concerts I've been, they never played it...

Washing Machine 04.19.2006 05:12 AM

I wanna Hear

Death Valley 69
Teenage Riot
Mote
Wish Fulfillment
Little Trouble Girl
The Diamond Sea
Sunday
Karen Revisited
Dripping Dream
I love You Golden Blue

kingcoffee 04.19.2006 07:20 AM

They're obviously going to make their show's represent their new album. I wouldn't be surprised if they did some Washing Machine era stuff. Maybe just a little bit. I'd love to see them do Diamond Sea live. The holy Grail of SY songs. But I think they will probably rely on some of their older material as the other songs. As long as they shy away from EJSTANS
