Best Opening Acts For SY That You've Seen

should be interesting, sy have had this tendency to select some pretty
polarizing bands to open up for them.

my top 5:

5. Black Dice 11/30/02, Irving Plaza--Of all the "noise" bands, these
guys are still my favorite. They didn't annoy the audience as much
as they did opening for the Yeah Yeah Yeah's but a great impatience
could be sensed.
4. Hair Police, 7/29/04, Vic Theatre--Wolf Eyes also played, but I'll be
damned if HP didn't just destroy them. Brutal shriek-fuck. Great on
record too.
3. Sleater Kinney, 9/4/05--Arthurfest--Played right before SY on the
main stage, so yeah, they count. Even sound issues and Corin
Tucker's iffy throat couldn't dampen this fun set.
2. Les Georges Leningrad, 8/4/04, Metropolis--Montreal weirdo freaks
came on after a wild performance by co-openers Sunburned Hand of
the Man and just went stupid. Expectorate flew upward and
outward, synth burped and vomited, band members fell over
(intentionally and not-so), and their hometown crowd was all  .
1. Stereolab, 3/17/02--Again, played right before SY at ATP LA.
Practically a greatest hits set, and the last American gig the band
would play before the tragic passing of Mary Hansen. Started with
"Come and Play in the Milky Night" and ended with "John Cage
Bubblegum", and the middle was the choicest deli meats.

noisemachine 07.29.2006 03:35 PM

Yeah Sleater-Kinney at arthurfest was cool, as were all the other bands that came before them on the main stage (black keys, sunburned hand, wolfmother, etc.). Other than that, Ive seen the with Wolf Eyes (which was interesting, but got old quick), and Awesome Color, who were good, not great.

krastian 07.29.2006 04:16 PM

Stereolab.....def.

Cantankerous 07.29.2006 04:17 PM

Guided By Voices, 8.15.03

nomadicfollower 07.29.2006 04:28 PM

I've only seen them once, but BYOP opened and I thought they were pretty good.

acousticrock87 07.29.2006 06:57 PM

I actually really liked Awesome Color. Very repetitive, but they were fun to watch. The Beatles, The Velvet Underground, Jimi Hendrix, and The Ramones were all mentionable openers, too.

Danny Himself 07.29.2006 07:34 PM

When I went to see Sonic Youth two years ago, the opening acts were Decaer Pinga and Afri Rampo. Dacaer Pinga are pretty much a drone band. Four tables with electronic whatevers on them. They played one 20-minute drone. It was shite.

Afri Rampo were ridiculously entertaining. I had no idea what the fuck was going on with their set. I also met their roadie after the gig who gave me a can of beer. I gave it to someone else.

malefactor 07.29.2006 08:34 PM

Polvo and Unwound at the Austin Music Hall, 11-15-95
I don't really remember it that much cuz I was probably too stoned, but it was probably pretty dope

golden child 07.29.2006 08:40 PM

ive been meaning to check out awesome color, my friend hated them in portland.

smothered 07.29.2006 09:03 PM

godspeed you black emperor! montreal qc, may 1998

k-krack 07.29.2006 09:11 PM

i wish they hadsomeone awesome opening for them in toronto... like Wolf Eyes and Hair Police. i don't really like the Go! Team all that much.. without the singer/rapper they'd be cooler.... does anyone know who else is opening?

Savage Clone 07.29.2006 09:18 PM

Cows.

atari 2600 07.29.2006 09:21 PM

It was at a show at the 40 watt with Cows opening for The Jesus Lizard that a kid broke his neck stagediving & the lights went up for a moment & then Yow snarled, "cool, somebody died." & then the lights went back down & they resumed their set. It was only after the show that paramedics arrived to take the injured guy out on a stretcher & I checked the paper afterwards & never heard anything about it. I think that was the last time I took hallucinogens & that was the last time I ever saw The Jesus Lizard too.

I never would have pegged you as a fan of Hole.

deathbombarc 07.29.2006 10:12 PM

best::::>>> Rrope in SF on the thousand leaves tour
also insane::::>>>> child pornography at the glasshouse in pamona last year
best overall opening lineup::::>>> pavement, then mudhoney, then kurt cobaine solo as a surprise guest at castaic lake in LA on the Dirty tour
more insanity:::>>>> Friends Forever crashing Don't Knock the Rock in LA and Friends Forever opening for the SY/Wolf Eyes collab at Friends Forever's warehouse in Denver.

You are so lucky. I'd give anything to see Polvo, now.

My favorite:

COMETS ON FIRE

Kyohan 07.30.2006 01:30 PM

Sorry to be obvious, but its got to be Nirvana. That '91 tour before Nirvana broke hugely, hearing the Nevermind songs before the album came out, when they were still playing with total passion in what they were doing.
Then SY came on and were even better!

greenlight 07.30.2006 02:27 PM

lucky you's!

sonicl 07.31.2006 08:13 AM

The first ones that come to mind are Rapeman and Mudhoney, both on the DDN tour.

in 9:30 in 2002 there was Mary Timony playing too.
I loved her performance

Umm...not sure who opened for who, but Endfest (outside of Seattle) in 1992. Sonic Youth, L7, They Might Be Giants, Mudhoney, Beastie Boys...it was the best SY show I ever saw--Thurston went completely nuts, and the setlist was phenomenal!

Yeah it was really cool from what I remember. I did see Unwound again, about 3 or 4 years ago at Stubb's BBQ in Austin. That was a lot of fun. I never saw Polvo again though...did they break up?

against_the_grain 07.31.2006 09:43 PM

Holy Shit !!!!

Everyone here has seem some great music with SY......It'd be hard to beat this collection over the last 15 years....

Besides this past June ....I'd seen Sonic Youth only once before in July 1992 with Cell and Throwing Muses......These were two fun bands too.....Throwing Muses being from Newport, RI..where the show was, so there were alot of friends at the...BIG PARTY !

Sonic Youth drained so much power....it was fuckin' loud in the Armory that evening. Soundcheck was a power disaster....Best 'modern' concert ever in Newport, IMHO.

I saw LZ in '69 there !!!

foldback 08.01.2006 12:32 AM

Black Helicopter in Providence last year was pretty cool.

And while not really an opener, seeing Be Your Own Pet, Deadboy & the Elephantmen and Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks before SY at Bonnaroo, all on the same stage, was really, really, really kickin'. One of the best days of music I've ever had, probably.

Style 08.01.2006 01:03 AM

I've only seen them once with awesome color. Good band, the drummer and the lead singer freaking out were the best thing about them.

she just missed my top ten., golden dove is my favorite album by her, right up there with dirt of luck, so it was very unique to see that set up i think that was the only time i saw her with a whole band, since then it's only been with only devin ocampo on drums

kingcoffee 08.01.2006 08:12 AM

Magik Markers and Mission of Burma.
