I wonder if he speaks like an ordinary guy."

Has anybody here seen the new documentary film "Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage"?

I'm not exactly a fan, though must confess they are something of a secret guilty pleasure - especially the early Ayn Rand-inspired stuff like "Anthem," (and I say that as somebody who can't stand Ayn Rand!)

Sure has been fun to poke fun at the band and their nerdy fans all these decades, but after viewing the doc the other night, I came away with a genuine respect for them as people, and as artists who have made a significant body of work, having succeeded on their own terms and staying together for that long remaining close loyal friends. Total integrity.

It made me think about and appreciate Sonic Youth's longevity and artistic growth, being another cult band that have stayed together a long time doing their own thing and evolving.

Anyway, ridicule all you like, take my word it's worth a view.

Rob Instigator 08.24.2010 01:37 PM

they can motherfucking PLAY

DeadDiscoDildo 08.24.2010 01:40 PM

Rush are a cult band? Weird, they're all over shitty classic rock station all over the country in America.

noisereductions 08.24.2010 01:48 PM

When Colbert had 'em on his show earlier this year, it was the first time they'd been on American TV in over 30 years.

I was at Pavement's last gig in London before they split up (like I've probably mentioned on this forum 3000 times already) and I still can't get my head around the fact that that night they really packed a punch as musicians much more than I think they did throughout their entire career.

I always thought that was Pavement's secret weapon. The whole stupid slacker oh-look-we-can-barely-play thing was a joke. They were (are) really really talented and TIGHT as a band. Even watching like the live shit on Slow Century -- it's like holy shit! They are ridiculously on point. And I mean sometimes you gotta pay attention to some of their really weird changes and shit. TERROR TWILIGHT is so shaton, but if you listen to like a lot of the weird stop-starting and (ahem) "jamming" on something like "You Are A Light" it's really a reminder that these muhfuggas could PLAY!

I'm not much of a bootleg geek when it comes to the majority of bands apart from VU, so if you can up me some stuff from that time which you think would make a point I'd be really grateful. :)

I actually avoid bootlegs these days, so the only Pav-live I have is um the Record Store Day ones really. But um.. do a youtube search for a live version of "You Are A Light" and see what happens?

atsonicpark 08.24.2010 02:36 PM

Rush are great.

Pavement ist rad -- for an album or two.

noisereductions 08.24.2010 02:43 PM

Pave Ment ist way rad. I like all the albums. But we've done this already.

Geddy's voice is in classic form in this cool clip of "Anthem" I found on youtube from 1975. The fashions have dated badly, but there's no denying the ferocious sonic power these three guys created. Give it a look 'n listen:

YYZ is amazing. Rush were rad for a "mainstream prog" band. I mean, they're no Thinking Plague or anything, but who is?

Rob Instigator 08.24.2010 04:26 PM

RUSH sure did and do create a massive amount of sound for three dudes. Not my fave band, but I can dig what they do.

akprodr 08.24.2010 04:52 PM

Rush is the band with Steve Perry, right?

That doesn't mean anything...no shortage of Rush fans, for sure.

So they were a super famous band who washed up.

That's not a cult band.

atsonicpark 08.24.2010 08:35 PM

Mmm Van Halen.
