Well, if it's over, then The Eternal is a pretty fucking great final album to end a career on especially after playing as a band for 30 years.

I don't like these shit news at all. Infinite thanks for everything they've provided us with through the power of their music, and all the best wishes for the present and the future in all aspects of their lives even if this could mean the end of Sonic Youth.

I can't even begin to tell you how much joy Sonic Youth has brought to me since I was like 12.

Wait everyone, maybe this whole terrible tragedy can yet be averted!

I don't know what to say, other than to offer the condolence that "separated" doesn't always end in "divorced". :(

They haven't announced they've split up yet. It's certainly disappointing to learn that a dream couple is splitting up. All the best to them. They seem like a relaxed pair of people when it comes to keep the personal where it should stay.

honestly this does make me very sad, sy is my favorite band ever (except for the eternal), but do you think thurston would give me kim's number?

Man, if I made a list of stuff that would be a sure thing for forever, I wouldn't even bother listing Kim and Thurston's status as a couple, that's how much of a sure thing I thought it was. Never really came into question in my mind.

I certainly hope the band finds it in them to stay together. Though if they quit, I wouldn't be totally surprised. And to be fair, we got more great records from them than we probably deserve.

But yeah, as someone said before, if they do stay together, I hope this turn of events turns out a really great record.

This totally floored me. Sonic Youth always seemed so unshakeable to me, and I think of big part of that was because Kim and T were together and had been for so long. Obviously, I don't know them personally, so I can't begin to speculate what caused the split, but (for whatever reason) I just never thought there'd be a day like this. My parents separated and then divorced and it was fucking hell. I feel bad for Coco. Man... shitty news... I really feel pretty bad about this.

I'm reposting my reaction from Facebook, because I heard it there in Genteel Death's post first.

Less than 3 months ago, I went to see Thurston play in Portland and Kim was in the audience up front with Coco. He ended the night with "Psychic Hearts" which my wife covered and I went home and told her all that. Now Deanne's dead and Kim and Thurston are breaking up. I'm well aware nothing lasts forever, but this has been the fucking hell year.

In fact my parents right now are giong through a separation and this stunned me more than my parents...


EDIT: key word is stunned. I wasn't as surprised when my parents announced their separation....but still....
