Sonic Youth Gigs With Gilmore Girls

April 06, 2006, 3:10 PM ET

Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.
Sonic Youth principals Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon, plus their daughter Coco on shakers, will appear on the season finale of the WB drama "Gilmore Girls" to perform an acoustic version of the new song "What a Waste." The show, of which the Moore/Gordon family is a professed fan, will be taped tomorrow (April 7) in Los Angeles and will air May 9.

As previously reported, "What a Waste" can be found on Sonic Youth's next album, "Rather Ripped," which will arrive June 13 via Geffen.

In other Sonic Youth news, Moore has been chosen to curate the Nightmare Before Christmas edition of the All Tomorrow's Parties festival later this year. The event will be held Dec. 8-10 in Somerset, England, and will feature performances by Sonic Youth and Iggy and the Stooges. The full lineup will be announced in the coming months.

Before it begins a short West Coast tour opening for Pearl Jam in July, Sonic Youth will perform April 20 in Paris and June 18 at the Bonnaroo Festival in Manchester, Tenn. Moore is also scheduled to discuss "Rather Ripped" tonight on Air America Radio's "Marc Maron Show."

Thurston, Kim, coco on gilmore girls, this honestly is the strangest thing I have ever heard.

CHOUT 04.06.2006 03:29 PM

i Fucking Hate Gilmore Girls

TheDom 04.06.2006 03:32 PM

Me too...

but I'll probably watch it for this, if it's even true.

Grete 04.06.2006 03:35 PM

oh GODDAMN!!!!!!!

Soundtrax 04.06.2006 03:37 PM

never wathced those gilmore girls, but from what i can gather on imdb.com, it has a christian feeling soap opera kinda taste. it seems stupid. well, it might be that coco loves it (she's much younger) and then of course the good parents must always be interested in what their kids love, so kim and thurston kinda "love" it too :D

Grete 04.06.2006 03:38 PM

in italy that fucking drama "gilmore girls" is called" una mamma per amica " my god..terrible..translated is..a mother like a friend..ahhhhhrrrrrrghhh

Soundtrax 04.06.2006 03:41 PM

oh yeah, now i can remember, they air this show in slovenia too :) well, its just an average soap opera :) i've seen worse :D

CHOUT 04.06.2006 03:42 PM

I give my friend so much shit for watching this show. I usually have a high tolerance for shitty tv, but this show is the boiling point for me, with all its contrived 'hip' references, 'witty' speedy dialog and pseudo-sophisticated bourgeois vibe that makes my stomach turn.

I'll have someone tape their part so I don't have to wait through all the garbage.

DoubleNickels 04.06.2006 04:06 PM

i don't think this random and fairly amusing TV appearance has any connection to the album other than the song they played.
a lot of thurston's "nicer" songs could have been on a prime time drama...ones like Sunday or Unmade Bed, so...

i don't think i'll watch it though.

!@#$%! 04.06.2006 04:56 PM

that's so fucking sad.

i watched that shit once cos someone who knew i watched buffy recommended it. but-- yikes!! no relation whatsoever. i think CHOUT described it best:

Yeah, that crappy cover art, the blue oyster cult/friends theme song thing, this...just keeps getting weirder and weirder.

Everyneurotic 04.06.2006 06:37 PM

you guys think too fucking much

i loved the first few seasons of gilmore girls, now it's all dumb and stupid, but the first ones were very funny.

in advance of your comments and bad reputation points...

:fuckyou: FUCK YOU :fuckyou:

i don't watch gilmore girls anymore but i will watch the season finale, no doubt about it!!

SugarLips 04.06.2006 06:42 PM

maybe they knew no one watching Gilmore Girls would know who the hell they were...and like someone else said doing something with your Kid is always cool...$$money could also be a factor, WB has some to throw around.. and we have our price....
..don't deny it, no lying... you all know you could be bought... just saying you couldn't is the truest sign of how much you want it... to be bought that is..

anyways I'll check it out.. I love SY...don't know about GG I haven't seen more than the commericals, but i trust from what is being said it must suck something big like a donkey's dong ...

schizophrenicroom 04.06.2006 06:43 PM

I think this is possibly the greatest and weirdest news ever. I used to watch it around first season. It's schmaltzy now, but whatever. It's amusing.

But hey, hearing a new track= pretty fucking sweet.

Coco is a cutie-pie.

dazedcola 04.06.2006 09:28 PM

How much do u wanna bet that it was coco that convinced them to go on the show ?

Coco: please dad, i want to be on tv and they said i could be on the show if you and mom did a song pleaaaaaaaaaaaaase.
Thurston: ok,fine. I wonder if Lee ever has to deal with this kind of thing with his kid ?

RockerNino 04.06.2006 09:52 PM

oh man, this should be interesting

Katy 04.06.2006 10:01 PM

There is worse TV than Gilmore Girls. Lots worse.

krastian 04.06.2006 11:34 PM

I hate the Gilmore Girls and I haven't even seen it. Isn't it a show for like 12 year old girls? But seriously, hopefully somebody will remind us of this when it airs so we don't miss it.

Everyneurotic 04.06.2006 11:43 PM

i hate sonic youth

gilmore gurls 4 lyfe!!!!

dirty bunny 04.07.2006 12:39 AM

Wow. I love Gilmore Girls. It's my favourite show on TV. I think it's awesome they're going to be on. Funny that SY fans don't like the show, and GG fans probably don't know who Sy are though.

der Don 04.07.2006 03:43 AM

I like that show. Funny and entertaining. Great to see Kim, Coco and Thurston on it.

strictlycommercial 04.07.2006 03:55 AM

I admire the balls.
Come on, it's a pair of cooler-than-thou art/rock types standing up & not only admitting that they like a shitty TV show but that they like it to such a degree they're willing to appear in it. Now that's class.

That & it could be useful promo.
I'd only be worried if the primary motivation was promo, appearing on a show you don't actually like just to help sell your album must be a really unpleasant experience.

krastian 04.07.2006 03:57 AM

This pairing is so insane and random. I don't get it.

well said. why is it that anytime they do something that doesn't fit in with their image and isn't popular with the "indie" community, everyone tries to give them a motive that might be okay enough to keep them on a pedestal? why does it have to be kim's fault, or coco's fault? a feminist might say why isn't it thurston's fault; maybe he just thinks the gillmore girls are hot. (and parenthetically, i have never seen the gillmore girls so i don't even know if that statement is possible.) why do you need to ascribe a justification? why can't the answer simply be, maybe they actually like the show and just want to be on it?

hey alex 04.07.2006 08:54 AM

wtf is gilmore girls? Becuz I'm thinking of that show about 4 old women living together... but that;s wrong.

I have no idea, but yea, this does seem strange. Not exactly the first time SY have done strange of the such, but it's a lot weirder being here for it rather than reading about it.

strictlycommercial 04.07.2006 10:23 AM

Nope that was the Golden Girls, now that would really be something.

defcon4 04.07.2006 11:40 AM

Folks need to lighten up. I think it's the funniest thing to happen to a good band on a bad TV show since Flaming Lips appeared on 90210. Anyone remember that? Or when SY was on Carson Daly. I don't watch GG but I'll definitely watch this.

h8kurdt 04.07.2006 12:03 PM

Never seen it but on a side note what the hell does Coco look like these days?

guitarpro 04.07.2006 12:14 PM

Well we know how CHOUT feels about this. As for me I'm looking forward to it yes I hate the show and have honestly only watched it once or twice in my life but anything SY related has gotta be cool

toxic johnny 04.07.2006 12:23 PM

I'm finding this whole thing amusing more than anything else. I have no idea what this show is like... and will probably never see it... SY have never been afraid of the mainstream and I applaud them for that.

Go Coco!.

silverfreepress (sdasher) 04.07.2006 12:46 PM

Oh man The Golden Girls! Thats a funny thought. Imagine back in '95 before Washing Machine came out if Sonic Youth were in Miami and I don't know Rose was found out to be related to Steve or something along those line. And the the first 5 minutes were setting up the situation and the next 22 minutes was a raucious version of The Diamond Sea. They'd cut to commercial mid song and come back from commercial and bam right back to the madness. I wish I controlled TV and so do you

thewall91 04.07.2006 12:52 PM

i'd love to hear a sonic youth cover of "thank you for bein' a friend."

vacuum noise 04.07.2006 01:54 PM

I agree that this album is seeming weirder and weirder but its jsut getting me more excited for it; and I dont really watch TV but Im stoked for SY on GG!!!!!

EMMAh 04.07.2006 02:24 PM

Hahaha sweet :D
