What DO YOU think we should all hear?

Everyone's got a favorite, even if it is SY, so share yr shit, let me know what YOU think is so good and that we all need to listen to.

Who cares about genre, language, anything, just what yr absolutely obsessed with at the moment.

Alright, so I've been obsessed with:
Oscillating Innards
Robert Inhuman
Sonic Youth (of course)
MF Doom
Slayer
and GZA/Genius.

porkmarras 06.21.2006 01:22 PM

Punka!

Glice 06.21.2006 01:22 PM

Erasure, Hank Williams, Keiji Haino, Herb Alpert.

nomadicfollower 06.21.2006 01:23 PM

Right now I enjoy everything Albini. Shellac, Rapeman, Big Black.

We were downstairs fucking and she called me a bitch and I told her it was nothing! I gotta stop drinking around, they take advantage of me!

Six Finger Satellite has been of some interest lately.

MF Doom is good. I don't really like his rapping (under the name MF Doom), but I really like the Special Herbs instrumentals.

Macaulay Culkin 06.21.2006 01:24 PM

Erasure's seemed to be stalking me everywhere I go, so I guess the stalking is true and that I should check them out.

Shellac!!! I remember hearing them a few years ago when I was first trying to find my own music to listen to on this website where they had free downloads of them. I loved it! That's when I started getting into mathrock a lot. Good choice!

Rob Instigator 06.21.2006 01:30 PM

Parts & Labor have been blasting my ears with beautiful beautiful skronk.

TV on The Radio have been on my turntable for a year straight.

The new BUILT TO SPILL is fucking GREAT, a tremendous return to form.

OUTHUD's latest album (Let Us Never Speak Of It Again) has been getting sick play at casa instigator as well.

Metallica's RIDE THE LIGHTNING has been in the car stereo nonstop, along with The Beastie Boys' HELLO NASTY and The Pixies TROMPE LE MONDE

Trasher02 06.21.2006 01:33 PM

You SHOULD be obsessed by my band.

atari 2600 06.21.2006 02:24 PM

the best suggestion thus far has been finding nobody's

10 more that aren't mentioned here (by anyone but myself) very often

Camper Van Beethoven

John Coltrane Quintet
Herbie Hancock Quartet
Robert Fripp & Brian Eno

by the way, i don't think everyone should hear anything, i mean, if you want to listen to something go on and discover it for yourselves.

Thee Hypnotics
The Heads
This Mortal Coil
Van Der Graf Generator

The Residents

Savage Clone 06.21.2006 02:32 PM

Wow, the Kinks?
Who are these "Kinks" you speak of?
Your references are so obscure; I never would have discovered such mysterious and underappreciated artists without this board!

atari 2600 06.21.2006 02:34 PM

The fact is that I am the only one (besides noumenal's "man crush on Ray Davies") that ever writes about The Kinks here. Good reading comprehension is such a bitch for many; it's sad. That's okay that porkmarras can write "milli vanilli" though. I understand. By the same unspoken accord, Rob can list Ride the Lightning. If forced to listen to Metallica, I'd choose the Garage Days Re-revisited ep.

slightly newer bands then?

Deerhoof
Animal Collective
Black Dice
Acid Mothers Temple
OOIOO
Melt-Banana
The Original Silence
Cat Power
Elf Power
Masonna
Ruins
Ground Zero

fairly new: Afrirampo
brand new: Be Your Own Pet

(I know you (& just about everyone else) already knows these, Savage Clone)
but the fact remains that most new music is not worth the effort.

If porkmarras can mention Vashti Bunyan then, by God, I can mention
Kate Bush and Joan Jett & the Blackhearts which both came out with new ones recently & blows Vashti Bunyan out of the water any day of the week.

Out of all the ones porkmarras listed (20 or so) Frank Sinatra, Kid Creole and the Coconuts, Bedhead & Masonna are the only ones that deserve any notice.

really, I would love someone to debate with me why Robert Johnson demands your listening attention far more than any artists that were listed prior to me making the statement affirming finding nobody's lone pick.
No biggie though...a lot of people profess to "love music" & are full of themselves & their own bullshit & those people miss out. Such is the way of the world.

Glice 06.21.2006 02:35 PM

I'm in with Porkie on this one. There's a nice wide mix he's put there. Interestingly, no sign of the Shaggs or The Fall, but surely everyone knows them by now?

Also: Kenicke, Avril Lavigne, The Master Musicians of Joujouka, Les Rallizes Denudes, The Boundus Boys and Nurse With Wound... and a million others.

What was the point of this thread again? Was it something about getting excited about records that are good?

sorry to correct you, but it's just

Sex Pistols

& they take a lot of shit on this board, but they KILL
(in the case of Sid & Nancy, literally even)

& even with limited output, they are better than PiL (which are good too)

of course you know where punk all really started, right? Maybe you do if you caught a post I made the other day. Punk fucking started with "All Day & All of the Night" by The Kinks way back in 1964 when Ray & Dave Davies came up with that uptempo barre progression & Dave sliced his amp speaker with a razor & pieced it back together with pins & tape to achieve previously unheard of distortion. Of course, there were elements of punk already brewing pre-'64 in rockabilly, garage & other styles, but that song is really the catalyst for it all probably more than any other single piece of music.

Oh, that little tidbit didn't make it into any VH-1 shows or to wikipedia? Such a pity. Well, you read it here first.

you're just trying to bait people with shit like this, right?

Avril Lavigne? The only other "rock" act in recent memory that is worse than this person is Fall Out Boy... really... I mean how does one even summon the nerve to perform if you're in Fall Out Boy? It makes no sense. They are beyond horrible. 9 out of 10 people making music in their garage have more talent to be developed than fucking Fall Out Boy who are successful artists.

Sorry, I shouldn't really pick this sore. BUT - surely you see that you could be hoisted by your own petard with that statement? I'm not saying that's necessarily what you're doing, but that is an exceptionally dangerous statement to make if you want to give your side of the (non-)'argument' any gravitas, surely?

I personally think Hank Williams is better and more important than Robert Johnson, but again, no biggie.

And so what?Would that mean that you have more passion for music than i have?I don't think so atari. It just means that even though i like Robert Johnson,i simply shy away from patronizing people with the reminder that he's been an exceptional musician.Put it this way,i give anyone enough credit to assume that they certainly know who he is without me bangin' on about him.And besides,Mojo magazine is available either online or from your local newsagent(figuratively).

I can comprehend your posts enough to remember your constant reminders that you have an IQ over 130 (because no one with an IQ under that level should smoke pot, according to your standards), and that you used to be involved with Amber Valentine. Oh, and the difficult family relations.
I am pretty sure I have read other people posting love for the Kinks as well.
Going back to read your extensive edits is something some of us might forget to do sometimes though...
