What was your favourite SY / related release of 2006
I was going to make this a poll, but there was too much damn stuff released last year.
My fave was Melbourne Direct, closely followed by Lee's Ambient Loop for Vancouver CD. |
Tough one... for now I'm going to say the Text of Light Metal Box, but that could easily change tomorrow.

i have no idea i didnt get that much to be honest. kill me.
|
Though it was technically released 12/05 and features music from years before that, I just got SYR 6, and it's been glued in my car's cd player since.
|
James Blonde votes for "Destroyed Room".
|
Is there a list of allt he 2006 stuff anywhere? Maybe someone could post it?
Off the top of my head the Text of Light Metal Box would be my favorite, but the Mirror/Dash Cd in the Threelobed Records boxset was really good also. Oh yeah Melbourne Direct, how could I forget that? it comes down between Melbourne and Metal, I guess I'd have to go with Melbourne. I haven't picked up Destroyed Room yet. For bootleg shit I got this year, the Original Silence in rome 2005 wins hands down. |
This is in no way a definitive list:
sy - rather ripped sy - helen lundeburg / eyeliner 7" sy - melbourne direct sy - destroyed room sy - ep rerelease ciccone youth - ciccone youth rerelease diskaholics - weapons of ass destruction diskaholics - live in japan vol 1 dream/aktion unit - blood shadow rampage giffoni/moore/cline/ranaldo - four guitars hooker/ranaldo - the celestial answer lee - vancouver ambients 7" lee - ambient loop for vancouver cd mirror/dash - live at max's 7" mirror/dash - i can't be bought cd new blockaders/thurston moore/jim o’rourke - the voloptulist sy/gustaffson - without kim text of light - metal box text of light/mciaa - split LP thurston - psychic hearts rerelease thurston - flipped out bride tlasila - noon and eternity two dollar guitar - the wear and tear of fear EDIT - If I included appearances on compilations that list would be at least 50% longer. |
there's also
Noise: Carte blanche au festival Art Rock DVD (Mirror/Dash, Text of Light w/ Steve Shelley, Jim O'Rourke) Nipple Creek/Can't - New Vietnam Blues/Messy Mystery split CD-R SY/Gustafsson - Without Kim is from before 2006 and I think Weapons of Ass Destruction too. |
Without Kim was originally pre-06, yes, but the wider CD rerelease was during 06, so I included it. I think that Weapons of Ass Destruction may have been available in Norway in 2005, but its "proper" release was in Feb 06.
You picked out two that I'd missed though, so I think we'll call that a tie, okay? |
Destroyed Room
I haven't heard much after all. |
was "without kim" a rerelease? i thought it was just the discovery by moshe that olof bright was still selling a few copies on his website.
you're probably right on the diskaholics though... alright, we'll call it a tie then. the english never win their penalty-shootouts anyway, so there's still hope for victory. :) unless the No Fun 2 DVD counts, then it's a golden goal. |
Destroyed Room and Helen Lundeberg/Eyeliner are my fav SY stuff this year.
As for side projects, Diskaholics Live in Japan is tremendous. Celestial Answer, the ToL box and the New Blockaders/Thurston/Jim disc are all great as well. |
I only bought Rather Ripped and it was trash.
|
on the first place definitelly melbourne direct or metal box, my cup of tea. followed by diskaholics - weapons of ass destruction and diskaholics - live in japan vol 1. followed by dream/aktion unit - blood shadow rampage. followed by flipped out bride. o yeah, rather ripped with helen and eyeliner rules. pleased with destroyed room (especially noho furniture songs) i still didn't dig four guitars (maybe i should listen to it again).
damn! i need to get the celestial answer, ambient loop for vancouver, split text of light and mciaa. unfortunatelly vancouver ambients is sold out (is there any chance it'll be reissued?)! new blockaders/thurston moore/jim o’rourke - the voloptulist. never heard of it. is it any good? |
Rather Ripped
|
Blood Shadow Rampage by the Dream Aktion Unit, far and away the most intense thurston related head scrambling noise recording he's been a part of in awhile.
|
We don't get all of that in Argentina! Wow! And buying it abroad costs a shitload because of taxes. So I had to make do with Rather Ripped...sad thing, considering.
But let's say Turquoise Boy was the best of the Rather Ripped lot. |

short but sweet. doesn't sound like thurston. sounds very NB, harsh, minimal, urgent. I would definitely recommend it. |

This disc is sweet but I can't seem to get into it as much, maybe cuz it doesn't do justice to my actually having witnessed this particular DAU live aktion... Paul Flaherty really kills it on this one though... cool thread... |
