army of darkness.
I just sat down and watched this movie after years of not seeing it. what a turd. it's the most disapointing movie i've seen in ages and after the first two movies. But I'm not sure if it's genius - like I can't comprehend how that film relates to the first evil dead at all. I liked the first evil dead - but loved the second for it's lack of script, cutting to the chase and sense of humour, but the third is way, way, way over the top and makes no sense. it fucks with the formula so much. but ultimatly i thought it was a bad movie.. and not bad in the good way. /maybe im stating the obvious but this is new to me.

the Evil was always there. In that spot. Hundreds of years before the shack was. Guy.

Spoilers for anyone who hasn't seen it
Yeah, but ash ended up in middle ages england - and when in the future was in london. I'm pretty sure it was all set in america before that. |
how do figure the future was London (oh wait, do you mean the directors' cut? okay. Cuz the original ending was back in America in an S-Mart.)
|
ah, possibly - i was watching it off a lent DVD. he takes seven drops and wakes up with like a destroyed big ben and future city.
|
yes yes, yr talking the directors cut. Which was released later on (at first) rare DVD, and then more widely. But the original ending made more sense (linear story-wise). So yeah. Um. Youtube it maybe and lemme know what you think?

I will do. I still think the slapstick was taken too far though. It felt kind of like the makers went "people liked it when campbell said 'groovy' in 2 so we'll work out a way he can say it again." I know is an odd argument to make about this kind of franchise but it made no sense. I didn't like it, i think, but it's possible that I think it should be admired. It's kind of like the things I didn't like about army of darkness were the things i loved about evil dead 2.

Army of Darkness is pretty awful. A few interesting scenes, but most of it is boring (even though it's really fucking short), and it's a mess. It was originally called "The Medieval Dead", which is a much better title.
Evil Dead 2 is probably my favorite horror movie ever though (next to MANIAC). |
AoD was fine I suppose. I liked it enough to want Evil Dead 4. Some cool ideas in there, though a little too comical I think. What really could they have done for a third movie though? I think they exhausted the use of the cabin across those two movies. They couldn't have done much more without it being redundant. Still the worst of the three though.

i'd have to say that every part of the movie is amazing.

I love the comedy and slapstick of Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness. Army of Darkness is campy and over the top, but that's what is great about it.
I think the first one is the worst of the three. But then again I don't really like horror. (Not a whole lot of comedy in the first one.) |
The girl in Army of Darkness is top notch.
My favorite scene: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=toiueGBwHJs |
I like the Gullivers travels type scene the best.

how could you not love it? It was like a John Carpenter Monty Python movie! the classic Sam Raimi cheese.. the over-top top satirical drama! The elaborate setting and use of props for an otherwise stupid movie? It is pure genuis! "Shop smart.. shop S-mart!" that movie is pure catch phrases |
that movie makes me laugh, cuz it is pure silly fun-tainment, and does not pretend to be anything but
watch it in a double bill with Martin's BLACK KNIGHT and it Army o darkness will seem like goddamn Casablanca! |
"that's just pillow-talk baby."
|
It's pure catchprase, not much else. It's artless. It's even a bit formless at times, and not in a god way. For a mainstream film in 1993, or whenever it came out, it has some appeal, like.. how did this ever get greenlit by the studios? I really like the first 10 minutes or so, and there are some choice moments later, often referencing better moments from the other two films. But the last 30 minutes or so are terrible, and even boring, something I can' say for Sam Raimi's other films (even the ones I don't like at all).
I will say, the movie's ending where Ash wakes up in the future.. the darker ending.. is really awesome. The "Hey She-Bitch" ending is bad. You can hear Xena: Warrior Princess's war cry in this film. That alone is enough for me NOT to recommend it. Interestingly, the effects in the first two Evil Dead films are topnotch, but the effects here -- in a somewhat big-budget, mainstream release -- are shit. In execution, the whole film just seems to be weighed down by... something. Not sure what. It just kind of goes nowhere. The whole castle seige thing is boring. The comedy is spotty. The "Who wants some of this?" scene is terrible and awkward. Evil Ash is terrible, serving no purpose. |

thats not fair, it is quite artistic, just not Sundance style.. Quote:
I think the point was for the effects to make fun of themselves, remember this was the crashing of the late 80s/early 90s special effects wave peaking with blockbusters like T2. It was satire against big Hollywood shit, and that is the art in itself. To make fun of itself in such creative ways that you don't even get it and just see campy cheese and catch phrases, its like an inside joke ;) |
I don't think this movie has any artistry, it's a dull catchphrasefest, a boring cash-in. Evil Dead 2 is artistic, and brilliant -- I can't think of any other movies at the top of my head that focus on one actor for most of the duration that are that compelling, and fun to watch.
