Whatever floats your boat really. But for what I'd consider "classic" Beck, his first two albums are where it's at.

they have two turntables and a microphone.

Mutations is fantastic! What is there to dislike about it? Quote:
I'm so very disappointed that I have to shrug at it. You could dance to Guero, you could sing along to the choruses in The Information, but this is something else. I think I do need to spend more time with it, but it's nothing like when I first played Stereopathetic Soulmanure on a walkman in the back of a car on some dusty Wyoming highway, or when I rapped along to Odelay in my bedroom when I was 14 or something. It's sad that Beck has gone from being one of my biggest heroes (thats him in my avatar) to just a huge scientologist let-down. |
but, what you care about that he is a scientologist? it's nothing compared with his records, so fuck it, and we dont have to talk about it. faith is faith, i hate catholic church, so? 90% of people are catholics. and i dont talk/think about it.
|
I don't know if I'll like it. Haven't been impressed with what I've heard so far, and 2 of the songs have Cat Power. I fucking haaaate cat power.

FUCK yes. Mellow Gold, Stereopathetic Soul Manure, and the Loser single are my faves. Odelay isn't bad either |

90% of people are Catholics? What?! Anyway, I'm bringing his scientology into this because since the press started hounding him about his involvement in the cult (around 2002), his records have gotten considerably worse. When people didn't know about it and just left him alone, his records were fantastic. |
THANK you. I'm not the only one who thinks his music HAS gotten worse since his Scientology.
|
no his music is not worse since this. people just think about that he is a scientolgist, and are sayin his music is shit. i didnt know that he is s. about 2 years ago i found out this, and i thought 'whatever' im not his body, im not his mother, i just enjoy his music.

Guero was a pile of garbage

Nah! Sea Change has been his worst album to date. Fair enough, he'd just broken up with his girlfriend of many years, but there was no need to force an album on us that was essentially the forerunner of James Blunt. 'Lost Cause' was a great song, but the rest is still too hard to sit through without screaming 'FOR FUCK'S SAKE!'. Maybe it's Godrich's fault, I don't know. Guero has some great moments. 'E-Pro' is Beck at the top of his rock and roll game. 'Que Onda, Guero?' has a really great rhythm to it, the lyrics to 'Missing' are some of his best of all time, the rolling beats and bass of 'Black Tambourine' are dance-tastic, and when the tremelo'd guitar comes in, fuck! Too good. |
Sea Change has amazing strings arrangments and great sounds.
|
E PRO??? good god. You are correct about Sea Change though. It's like Beck did lead vocals for a James Blunt album

I don't like strings that sound that clear. I want them to be screeching and whining idiosyncratically, like on a Bright Eyes album. Maybe if Nigel Godrich hadn't produced that album it would have been more listenable. Quote:
Nah, this is the Beck I like; ![]() |
I don't think I can say I like a certain Beck CD more than another. It fluctuates. Every CD has it's good spots, and I can stomach them all at one time or another. Even though some CDs have bad qualities (like Sea Change's lyrics, or the Information's lack of variety), I can enjoy them all if I'm in the right mood.

Yeah, he's just fun bubblegum indie rock |
To give him some more recent credit. The Information was good. That one impressed me. Heh I didn't even put any stickers on my cover, I stuck them all over bathroom wall in my apartment.
Nothing beats beck's early music though. I love it so so so much. Bust out the biscuits! Ah yeah, gettin all uptight! My goodness |

I find this to be a statement album. Besides Sea Change Beck was never direct in his lyrics and to hear him accept the apocalypse like he does on Modern Guilt is amazing. Profanity Prayers is the ultimate summer song and the line in "Volcano" about warming his bones on the womb of the world gives me goosebumps.
