Jenn, I will not read your review until I am done with the book! But I am looking forward to it! |

it's from kim's talk @strand youtube link was posted above. q: what do kim & lana del rey have in common? answer in that video ha ha ha == whew, just finished downloading the audiobook. my turn to listen. |
cheers for the update on amazon.
yeah, that video man... there were more of Kim's reactions, I was like..whaat? twitter remark, or feminism remark (knife)....bit...I don't know (maybe I got older and it doesn't sound so cool to me anymore). she seemed bit nervous at times, looking for an answer, so she said, what she said , still trying keeping it cool, end up sounding it, ahhh, can't really find the right words to express it in english. sorry. too cheesy? in the end she was probably sarcastic anyway.. and don't get me wrong, still big respect! just overall feeling of that QaA vid. so is she going out with astronomy guy? |

Thanks to anyone who read the review, whether you liked it or not. I'm glad I wrote it.

Ah.. The thing about that video.. It's a bit too 48 minutes long for my liking. Maybe I'll get around to watching it some day but I just binged on the goddamn book recently plus I think you're right, she's a better writer than public speaker. If anyone wants to summarize the video in a TLDR format, by all means feel free goddamnit. |

she was good and funny and just herself. she wasn't really criticizing twitter per se-- just the spending of too much time on it. it was a pretty casual thing, not some glorious formal prepared speech to the masses, just an armchair conversation with someone you already know is shy and hypersensitive. i liked her a lot in it. the video doesn't really need to be "watched" in that the frame of the image remains pretty much the same-- unless you're interested in the interviewer's gesticulations. no fucking way i kept my eyes on the screen the whole time. you can just watch the first minute and then put it on the backround and listen to the rest. i did that while doing other computer tasks i can't remember right now. or you can convert it here: http://www.youtube-mp3.org Quote:
what's there to vacillate about? i'm asking objectively-- i.e., do you say this from a sense of modesty? or do you really have problems with it, and if so, what are they? i'd rather hijack the thread talking about your review than fending off sway's fool rants! (i mean, only if you want). yes? |
I'm actually happy with it. Even proud. I put my foot down and I don't see how I could have served my feelings on the book any better. Ignore my silly self.

Jenn, about the kim being jaded about new york, its an LA thing. All of us here more or less have a "meh" vibe about NYC and also we more or less resent your California is insecure comments if anything possibly quite the opposite, we may be smugly and over confidentally secure in ourselves. Also California/LA likes sprawl, NYC like congestion and i dare say it explains our radically different personalities as cities.. Cali spreads out and absorbs gradually whereas NYC has to draw everything inward

I loved jenntheben's review.. i agree with her completely about not needing to have ever known all the marital drama between kim and thurston but i get why it was important for kim to write about because in a way their relationship was crucial to understanding their art together in SY and just as important then is understanding the dynamics of how that relationship ended which subsequently explains the demise of the band
Maybe we all never realized just how much all the music was about themselves? |

Just finished the book! I enjoyed reading about Kim growing up and moving to NY, also I learned some things about SY song titles/lyrics. I didn't enjoy reading about the break up of the marriage and the band but thankfully there wasn't too much about that...
I'll check Jenn's review now! |

Finished it at lunch today.
Jenn, as I stated earlier I read your review as soon as I could after finishing the book. your review is great, and I want to tell you that, as someone who has followed your writing for a while now, I can see the growth and the increased ability to focus your language to convey exactly what you feel. That is bad ass!!!!!! You are kick-ass. Keep it up. Fuck everyone else. Dumbshits anyways. I will be writing my review of Girl In a Band and posting it on my book review blog, and I will make sure to provide a link here. |
BTW, as a divorced man who fell out of love with his wife, but DID NOT cheat on her, the passages detailing Thurston were like reading a mirror-universe, reverse version of what I went through, and it made me very glad that I never lost my respect for my ex-wife enough to do what he did.
I love you Kim. |

I never lost respect for my exwife either.. we just became different people because we were too young. Indeed i still love her and we're still distant but sincere friends and now we are sucj different people that its amazing we were together for several years as it is! We just had this deeper connection that transcended our differences and allowed the compliment each other until we just grew too far appart for our love and connection to bridge the gap. In all reality it worked out better for both of us and today we're mutually proud of the people we've vecome. I can only hope kim and thurston can keep their friendship too, they were married for longer then many of my friends even have been alive and so surely they also had a deeper connection worth somewhat preserving when the dust finally settles.. cheating and adultery SUCK and are PAINFUL but they also are just reflections of people's inward shift and so the severing would have been inevitable regardless |
In her book Kim details the dates Thurston and Eva hooked up, especially nine months before Eva's son was born, although Kim doesn't mention the baby, who was born on September 21, 2011. Kim decided to announce the split right after that. A baby is usually the last straw.

the other day i had this critical-paranoiac (dalí) flash in which secretmonalisa (a shy hypersensitive name-- and from kansas, no less!) was kim's internet alter ego, digging up the dirt here in the board. (this is evidently so not true but i like to imagine things) HI KIM! *i know how to stucco* |
A baby is an almost guaranteed last straw. The usual last straw is being caught, then caught with the same person again. While I am an asshole and sympathise w thurston, he really should have bailed on kim far sooner. A desire to cheat is normal and ok. Actually cheating is normal but bad....continuing to cheat is a clear sign one is unsatisfied and should move on. I sympathize still though. Being with one petson for 30 years, out of the "game" for so long, and having a kid involved complicatea things in ways I can only pretend to understand.
|
I don't know, maria and arnold stayed together until the kid that looked exactly like arnold was like 12 or 13! Usually there isn't a singular "deal breaker" usually what ends a marriage is when all the combined effords towards reconciliation fail or explode beyond any possible resolution.
