5. The Bees Made Honey In The Lion's Skull
6. medley (almost a jazz odyssey, but not quite): new song, (His Teeth Did Brightly Shine, The Corascene Dog, Descent To The Zenith), new song
7. Ourobouros Is Broken

Dylan Carlson: electric guitar
Adrienne Davies: drums
Steeve Moore: electric piano, trombone
Don McGreevy: electric bass
*electric tamboura-in-a-box played itself on "Bees Made Honey"

This show is cool because you get to hear some new songs, some songs from the "Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light I & II" era played by the "Bees Made Honey In The Lion's Skull" era lineup (which might be my favorite lineup, if push came to shove), and some old songs. "Bees" was positively massive. On their last tour Dylan said they were going to retire "Ourobouros" from the setlist to make way for other (old) songs, but it looks like it just won't die. I also recorded Steve and Don's opening set as Stebmo. I should have recorded Fontanelle too, but was trying to conserve battery and memory for the headliner, probably would have been fine in retrospect.

I think this one came out particularly nice sound-wise, probably 'cause the sound in the room was good (high arched cielings), we were 15-20 feet back, front and center, & PA volume wasn't crazy loud. Both bands uploaded together, opener is only 19 minutes:

http://wtrns.fr/MryNKaes5y9zCwU

As before, I can't get bit-torrent to work, so anyone who wants to can put this up on dime for me. I forgot to include the tech info in my text files (along with the "share freely, support bands" spiel, and a few omissions and misspellings I have corrected in this post):

iPhone 3s->FiRe 2 app->Wav->Audacity 2.0.0->flac

We talked briefly with Steeve and Adrienne, they were really cool. I bought an Earth shirt, poster, and Stebmo LP, all of which are really cool. Later in the weekend I had to buy a cheap used Herbie Hancock best-of 2LP set after digging Steeve's electric piano so much. This is just the beginning of their US tour, alert to fellow US-residing SY boarders who dig these guys, and I know there are a few, they are coming to a town near you, don't miss 'em!

Recently downloaded a Dylan Carlson set as drcarlsonalbion from Phil Mackie's blog, and thought it was pretty cool. I've been bummed by the notification that the process to press that Touch 7" release got fucked, but I'm looking forward to "La Strega and the Cunning Man in the Smoke" (has anyone received their copy already? I understand it must be out by now).

I should be posting my recordings of Phil Niblock & Thomas Ankersmit, Laurel Halo, Sun Araw, and Tim Hecker soon. I like the action I'm seeing in this thread...

I think the Latitudes session (on which La Strega... etc. will appear) has yet to surface. But I picked this up when I saw him at Corsica Studios recently http://www.discogs.com/drcarlsonalbi...elease/3944947

I just emailed Forced Exposure, and they said they would be getting some copies of La Strega... in soon, much better shipping rates for those of us in North America.

Two awesome bands from San Diego we saw together this weekend, at a free event sponsored by a new upcoming car company(?!), not sure how widespread their appeal will be on this board, but here goes:

Astra
2012/11/10 Roxy Theater, Hollywood, CA
http://wtrns.fr/q_wgQwXQ1fWjWHZ

These guys are one of the leading lights in the nouveau prog scene. Often-but-not-always-heavy, psychedelic prog rock of the highest order, vocals with long instrumental passages. Two albums with Roger Dean-evoking cover art by Arik Roper. Several members are multi-instrumentalists; on stage they have a (digital) mellotron, two moogs, some other keyboard, & double neck guitar, in addition to guitar, drum and bass. No floor length sequin capes, yet. This one is four long songs stretched over a fourty minute set. Jim O'Rourke would probably dig them based on his publicly acknowledged affection for Yes, if you need an excuse. Band site with vids to sample: http://www.astratheband.com/fr_news.cfm

Earthless
2012/11/10 Roxy Theater, Hollywood, CA
http://wtrns.fr/YgpHl3K21oaY1zT

Heavy psychedelic instrumental power-trio acid rock shredding into infinity. This set is one continuous jam, a loose medley of a few of their themes strung together with high-octane face-melting high-gain guitar madness for fourty minutes. Here's a nice live promo vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v0zdIvUYpn0 Earthless is kind of the equal and opposite band of Earth, in nomenclature and musical style. If they ever played a show together, the universe would explode.

White Hills also played, but we were unimpressed, and I had to leave to fulfill some lab protocols while my wife stayed for Enslaved, whom she reports were good but I did not have a chance to record them.

When we saw these two play together in San Diego a while ago they had a liquid light show with 5 overhead projectors going by Operation Mindblow (http://www.youtube.com/user/operationmindblow), not this time though. It's West Coast Psychedelic Rock, you're goddamn right there should be a liquid light show! Some of the vids in the links reflect that, I havn't watched them all the way through, I think we were at some of those shows so these may or may not contain footage of our faces melting off...

As always, I can't get torrents to work, so upload this to dimeadozen for me if you feel enthusiastic.

gambra 11.13.2012 12:50 PM

Thanks for the Earthless show, I love those guys. I was at the Roadburn concert that they released on LP and it was mindblowing. I'll up the shows you've uploaded on DaD and give you full credit of course.

_tunic_ 11.13.2012 05:13 PM

Thanks for the reshare of D3, I'll upload it to Dime in a couple of days
Once I've grown tired of listening to my gy!be recordings which is NEVER :D
Check out BBF3 of 5/11/2012 if you're even remotely interested in this band. And play loud!

hirsute_biped 11.13.2012 09:45 PM

You are both welcome. If I have made just one stoner rock fan (and one instrumental post rock fan) happy, then I have done my job.

Notes:

Astounding show from the Canadian saxaphone player Colin Stetson. Probably more well known for being a back up musician for the likes of Arcade Fire or Bon Iver, his solo record contains music that was previously unimaginale through a saxaphone. One of only a few recordings I've listed to almost as soon as I was outside the door of the venure, it was that good. The sound in the Twisted Pepper is up to its usual high standards and I think this might be one of the best sounding tapes I've done with the Edirol.
