I disagree that cover of "Communist Eyes" is out-of-place. I think it's a great addition to Thurston's masterpieces of punk covers (Beat On The Brat, That's All I Know [Right Now], etc...)

scott,
I can get you a ticket if you want.... Do you use paypal? |
SY has a history of 'out of place' covers.....Hotwire my heart

ah yes i did see that now on the Lee's Palace site, I'll give that a shot. |

I'll get back to you if this ticketfly doesn't work... |
Its 100% legit. I used it.

In case anyone was wondering, the LP has a different track list than the CD. And the songs on the bonus 7" are on the CD.

What's the vinyl track list order? |
Quote:
12" 1. Lip 2. Sleeping Where I Fall 3. Alighted 4. Empires Of Time 5. Groovy & Linda 6. Burroughs 7. Mohawk 8. Frank O'Hara Hit 7" 1. Heavenmetal 2. Commmunist Eyes |
Burroughs is my favorite track. The long bridge is the highlight of the record for me.
In general, this music seems kind of simple compared to SY, but some of it is pretty catchy. The "Don't shoot. We are your children." verse from Groovy and Linda sticks in my head. I also like Sleeping Where I Fall, Frank O'Hara Hit, and Empires of Time. Not crazy about Lip or Mohawk. |
I made my own track list with the CD. It might be cliche' but I can't stand having the longest and most explosive track (Alighted) at the beginning.
!. Heavenmetal 2. Sleeping Where I Fall 3. Burroughs 4. Empires Of Time 5. Groovy & Linda 6. Lip 7. Frank O'Hara Hit 8. Alighted 9. Mohawk 10. Communist Eyes Quote:

Drove up to Toronto yesterday as a friend wanted to go hit the shops on Queen & College streets, got my tix @ Soundscapes... so I'm all set. Glad to see that Soundscapes has abit more vinyl now, its been awhile but the last time i was there they didn't have as much, and is Juno Records a new shop? Got to Rotate This too late as they were closed and didn't reach Moog music to get my fix on guitar effects ...maybe when i'm back up at the end of the month. |

What about the download code that comes with the LP + 7" — does it let you get ALL songs? Thanks in advance for your reply. |

The download code gives you all the songs in mp3 or flac |

Just got home from the Denton 35 show. They absolutely killed it. Sorry, but I do not feel this recording does their live show justice. It was just...so...brutal, honestly. Really explosive tracks. And 30 minutes of Thurston noise guitar (20 minutes in between sound check and "start," 10 minutes in the encore) was just awesome to see.
As much as I may have wanted to hate on some of these post-SY products, I have to say I am really liking what each member is doing. |

Good to hear, the live clips of this band from that recent basement birthday gig sound intense. Thurston is using some different distortion effects to get a more metal-ish tone out of his guitar it seems too. |
Quote:
Yep, the distortion mixed with a lot more palm-muting in this band really just tends to club you upside the head, wonderfully. They really do have an awesome "heavy" sound I really enjoyed. |
Somebody better capture this shit:

I'm listening to the CLM album for this first time this instant and the jam on 'Sleeping Where I Fall' just gave me chills. The lyrics/chorus are kind of corny, but the jam is undeniable. Worth the price of admission, for sure. Next song starting now...
|
They also played an unreleased track called OK STOP GO or something like that
|

They've been playing a couple of new songs. "No Go" and "Sunday Stage"". You can listen to both here: http://southernshelter.com/2013/03/o...3-08-the-earl/ and here: http://www.nyctaper.com/2013/03/chel...cmp3streaming/ |

It looks like there was also an option for the LP with 7" + CD! |
Waterloo Records

also to be clear: the LP/7" (the 7" is a permanent thing) and the CD have the same tracks, but in a different running order. |
Anyone else surprised by the negativity surrounding Chelsea Light Moving? Almost every review I've read has been indifferent at best, critical at worst.
If these songs had formed the bulk of a new Sonic Youth album I bet they'd have been received differently. |
Quote:
I don't think that's true. Some SY records have gotten negative reviews. |
Quote:
At the Maxwell's show, he mistakenly referred to "Sunday Stage" as "Space Station." Of course, he was joking. It was pretty damn funny. |
having given it a fair few listens, I'm still really unsure as to how I feel about this album. it's really enjoyable, and I really respect thurston for just going at it and making the most conventionally 'rock' album of his career, but therein lies the problem: it just feels a bit pedestrian to me, like it's unnecessarily heavy at points and not nearly as melodically rich as anything he's done before.
live, though, I have no doubt that they would blow my fucking balls off. |
Quote:
Hmm. I don't think I've read more than 1 explicitly negative review. I think there have only been one or two wholly positive ones, though, so maybe you're right. But I wouldn't pay a great deal of attention to whatever Pitchfork has to say about it. They seem honor bound to give every Sonic Youth solo album/side project the same kind of non-committal 5.5-6.9 review usually reserved for Pearl Jam love albums and Coldplay records. Last Sonic Youth-related review I read was of Between the Times & the Tides, which I felt they totally glossed over, thoughtlessly missing nuances and subtleties, and summing up the album in a very "I haven't heard it, but I'll bet I can swing this; deadline's tomorrow anyway!" Kind of way. I really hope they didn't attempt a review of Smart Bar. Chelsea Light Moving might be the best post-breakup Sonic Youth-related album yet. Maybe even the best sy related non-sy album yet. I can't get enough of it. |

1. They are not broken up. 2. Best SY related non-SY album? Maybe. I have yet to hear the Body / Head releases so I can't really say that I agree or disagree. Better than Rather Ripped? Yes. Better than The Eternal? In some ways and in some ways not. And I prefer Demolished Thoughts to CLM, honestly. |

I cannot believe a fan of Sonic Youth would feel this way. That is horrific. Sonic Youth is the sum of it's parts. That's why sonic youth is amazing. The different personalities that you hear in different songs. It's part of why they're my favorite band. Kim is my personal hero. Lee wrote some of the best sy lyrics. Steve is an incredible drummer and him joining the band made a huge impact on the way they sounded. Thurston is of course incredible but I'm sure he would be shocked to see that someone who listens to his music would think this way of the people he has spent the last 30 years of his life with. and on a side note doesn't anybody else like Free Kitten? That is my favorite Non-Sonic band that a member started. I'm cool with Chelsea Light Moving- it's like Thurston's Free Kitten that happened to start while they are on hiatus. That's the only reason it made me feel weird and I guess is making the rest of us uncertain about SY's future. Just think of it as his solo shit got a band name. That's what he said in an interview basically. That was the band that traveled with him as Thurston Moore but he just prefers to be in a band "it feels like being in a gang." Chelsea light moving is a very good band. I just saw them in Atlanta with Merchandise. They were awesome. Groovy and Linda is officially MY SONNNGG. I am really stoked that Chelsea Light Moving is touring and playing shows with underground up and coming bands like Merchandise and Grass Widow-and they are playing clubs. It's awesome. Keith Morris is doing this with OFF. It makes me proud of Thurston. This is the way to do it. It's not like they're starting out at the Variety Playhouse - they're playing the earl. It's cool. AND the record is like 15 bucks with a 5 dollar 7". That is awesome. NOW here's the serious part. When am I gonna get a new Free Kitten album and tour - KIM? |
