I know! I figured "Pay No Mind" would be 1 of 2 things: Either a Thurstonish TREES/MURRAY ST faithful acoustic version, or a super noisy rawk version; but this was something else entirely. I think for the first half I was like "awe, what a letdown" but by the 2nd half I was like "OMG... I love SY soooo much!"
|
I hated it, I think I still do, I only gave it a couple listens. Pay No Mind is one of my favourite songs and I think they just lazily butchered it, the pretentious twats.
|
Yeah, I thought it was extremely lazy as well.
|
It was lazy in an awesome way. Though, remember, I'm the one guy who's not in the band that LOVES "Eyes & Teeth".
|
PS, what makes "Pay No Mind" is Steve's beats.
|
I was kinda dissapointed....
The original has such a strong quality. |
I instantly loved the "green light" cover, it reminded me off something from his early folk period. I wish he'd go back to this style more. Its quite a feat to make a sonic youth song into a beautiful acoustic track.
On the otherside "pay no mind" was nothing what i expected. Its one of my favorite beck songs and i thought theyd do a version of it like they did "im not there". The first half is really deconstructed but then it got great with the noise part sounding like some prime EVOL material and ending with a Dirty kind of rock groove. They should have pressed more copies of the single, I wasnt able to get one on record store day. |
i heard Green Light by Beck and yeah is a fucking awesome version.
|
Beck's green light cover is fine. It sounds like a total toss-off though, recorded during studio down-time.
the Pay No Mind is very cool. I have not heard the original but I enjoyed the song for what it was. |

that's really surprising to me for some reason. I mean, it wasn't all over the radio or whatever, but it's sort of a signature tune. I'd be as surprised if somebody said "I've never heard 'Serve The Servents" or something like that. |
i will chekc it out on the youtube.
|
Nope. never heard it before.
why do people complain about malkmus' lyrics being pointless and meaningless and not get on beck's ass about his non-sequitor lyrics? I wonder... so many questions. |
no garage is anti-orgasm song from session.

I love both of their lyrics, personally. |
i like obfuscating lyrics too. the last thing I ussually want to hear is the "deep thoughts" of some cocksmear in a band
|
wow, becks version of green light is really good.
and i really dont like beck |
i just heard pay no mind. i thought it was cool. i like hearing SY sing the folk tune over the feedback. it was nice to hear them sing in a different meter than what they usually sing in.
they should do more folk stuff |

Yeah, like the singer-songwriter album by Lee :D. |
the original pay no mind is the only beck song i'm familiar with(it's in a local skate video from my jr.high days haha) and i thought the sy cover was pretty much boring and pointless
haven't heard the greenlight cover but i'm looking forward to it |
I listened to Green Light & Pay No Mind on youtube.
Pay No Mind is pretty boring. Green Light is pretty good though. |
I really dig Beck's cover of "Green Light." The SY cover of "Pay No Mind" didn't do much for me though. "Pay No Mind" just doesn't translate very well with Sonic Youth's sound...I wonder why they choose "Pay No Mind" to cover.
|
I am enjoying the Pay No Mind cover very much... it is pure deconstruction bliss.

Probably because of the awesome lyrics. |
the 'pay no mind' cover isn't horrible, but it would be so much better with just lee's vocals. normally i really don't mind kim's vocals, but it kinda brings this track down a bit.

Sonic Youth covering Beck covering Bob Dylan!
|
Don't know legit this is, but I just read on a Beck blog this:
"Last November, Beck and his band covered on stage, “Star Power.” This is a Sonic Youth song from their album EVOL. A few months later, it was announced that Beck was releasing a cover of “Green Light,” which is also from EVOL. That release was a single, the b-side being a Sonic Youth cover of “Pay No Mind” no less! What does all this EVOLness mean? We learned today, thanks to our friends in Japan, that Beck has covered the whole album. He said this in an interview/article with a Japanese magazine. I’m told it will be part of some Sonic Youth box set. I know SY has been releasing Deluxe versions of their albums, so maybe EVOL Deluxe? Or maybe some greater box set project? Regardless, this is super interesting and really a fun thing for Beck to have done!" I personally really loved Beck's cover of Green Light so hopefully one day we might be able to here this. Since Moshe hasn't said anything about this or about an EVOL deluxe I'm not getting my hopes too up though. None the less I think both would be amazing. |

Whoa. I'm not a huge Beck fan, only like his stuff every once in a while, but the Green Light cover was cool enough that I'd really like to hear that. |

this song made me listen SY again. |
It's kinda sad to see all those copies on ebay.
|
^^ yeah notices that yesterday also. The discs aren't amazing though...especially Yoof-wise.
|
Hearing this for the first time right now, odd fit... kinda works though. Drums are particularly awesome.
|
Beck's cover is neat
|
Everyone should check out "Won't be Long" by Beck. It features a sick bass line.
