Ok this is how awesome a guy I am: while nearly running late for work, I took a few minutes to skim the other vids (I had already viewed one of them) just to prove my respect for you and your taste in music.

I truly only had moments to spare, but I went through them on my phone while brushing my teeth, just enough to get a flavor for the songs, and honestly it sounded pretty good. Ok? I will spend more time with this artist later, because of your recomendation. I'll get back to you when I've had more to digest.

Will you do the same with ANY of the hip hop records I hyped last year that no one really bothered with? Underachievers? Open Mike Eagle? Black Milk? Diamond D's excellent Diam Piece record?

The way I see it, it's only fair that you do, considering the fact that not even louder or NR had much to say about any of these albums.

It's true we all (NR, louder, myself) share a lot in terms of our all time favorites (Kanye, Wu, HOV) and our taste in golden era classics (Midnight Marauders, 36 Chambers, Illmatic, Reasonable Doubt, Ready to Die, C3), and it's even fair to say that we tend to like the same new releases and Mixtapes....

But there are huge differences in what we think the best releases of the year are, and all three of us like artists that the other two hardly even acknowledge.

Just wanted to point that out. We haven't been echoing eachother, especially not in 2014/15. Last year I was ALL Underachievers, NR was bout Rick R$ay, and louder went for Piñata in the end. All great records, but I think Piñata was the only one that was a top 5 pick for all of us.

So be fair bra.

louder 02.05.2015 11:21 AM

actually i'm pretty sure NR didn't like Piñata. but yeah you made a good point there, Sev.

SuchFriendsAreDangerous 02.05.2015 12:46 PM

Severian, i wasn't trying to coerce you into listening to Midnite or necessarily diss your taste. Rather, just pointing out that if you're going to comment or especially trash talk what i shared the least you could do is listen to it so you know what you're talking about. Believe or not, i posted the links to share cuz i THOUGHT possibly y'all might dig it. About links you post, i check them out when i can, if i don't post or reply about them its because i didn't have anythjng nice to say so i didn't post.

I feel like you would have shot your was over Piñata. It's a gangsta rap fan's dream. Like Madlib cut a slice of thuggin ass Compton pie back in '93 and played it through some crazy Dr. Seussian instrument... Possibly called the Jazzamatazzed Peddle-powered Functificationizer....

Which in my head looks something like this:

You'd also probably dig YG. And what about 36 Seasons? Did you even listen to Underachievers' Cellar Door?

Oh well. I guess I'm just saying- you've applauded my recommendations before. So I'm finding it hard to believe that you didn't like ANYTHING I repped over the last year.

But you also didn't seem very interested in joining the discussion. I DID check out the Gad (ER whatever) track. Just hoping you might do the same, is all.

I know you guys will hate me, but I can't get into Gibbs. Pinata did nothing for me. Just being honest.

But YG - OMG. My Krazy Life is incredible and I agree, I think SuchFriends would love the hell out of that album.

SuchFriends, remember how much you didn't like Good Kid MAAD City? Imagine the polar opposite. That's why My Krazy Life is to me. The total opposite of Good Kid. It's Bad Kid Maad City. It's so dope.

You're being conservative... I'd say it's more like "Shameless Kidd, bAAd City" or "Bad Kidd Baad City" at the very least.

I don't know why you couldn't get into Piñata, but it would be dumb to hate you for it. It took me a long time to get into it, as it sounds nothing like the usual Madlib project. But in the end it just went hard, period.

sev, I think a lot has to do w/ Gibbs' flow. Just doesn't click w/ my ears for whatever reason. I respect the guy. I just can't seem to get into him.

I listened to My Krazy Life again today. Just straight up love that record beginning to end.

Thanks for the interview, Rob. I love PE.

The truth is that i have been so busy with full time grad school at nite and full time work in days i haven't even had time to get more than 4hours of sleep a day and so no new music. I barely even could squeeze in Midnite's new record and im admittedly obsessed with him! I mossed bodyhead show.. going to miss dead prez (!!!) next week.. kinda bummed but too burnt out to even dwell on it.. so Sev, sorry i missed your recommendations its nothing personal at all, just ain't got even a literal second to spare

understood bro. IRL = important. All good. Put that YG on the backburner for when you got some time.

Oh that's right, you're actually still in grad school, and are likely going to finish quite soon.

I have zero pity for you.

But I do respect your ability to prioritize. I'm the type of person who fails at long term, high stakes endeavors because I can't stop wasting time at the record store, and reading for pleasure... Makes it damn hard to read for school, even when the subjects are the same.

Anyway, yeah- do what you've gotta do man. Just give these records a spin when you do have the time.

SuchFriendsAreDangerous 02.07.2015 10:27 PM

Actually i just started, i applied three different times but only finally got some funding together last Fall semester so i got a ways to go.. I ain't asking for pity cuz you ain't my momz or wifey but why the attitude problem sll of a sudden? You been hangin out with !@#$! or what?

louder 02.08.2015 04:43 PM

Gibbs was already one of my fav rappers even before Piñata.

don't forget i really liked Future's releases as well. in fact Monster STILL gets plays from me every day.

that new Kendrick song though, hot damn. http://pitchfork.com/reviews/tracks/...ker-the-berry/

louder 02.10.2015 12:55 PM

wow, after a few listens i can say that Kenny truly redeemed himself with one. this is so much better than "i" (and i liked that song). new album might as well make Good Kid seem like child's play.

Severian 02.10.2015 05:47 PM

Let's not get ahead of ourselves. Good Kid will probably never be outdone.

I'm so glad I didn't watch the Grammys. Yeah, Beck's album was not by any means the best, but Beyonce's didn't deserve to win just because Beyonce's never won before. I mean- Beck hasn't even won the big award before, though he's been nominated for it several times.

Anyway, the point is Beck doesn't "have" to do anything. He didn't make the decision. He had NO say actually. And him giving his award to Beyoncé would accomplish literally nothing. Beyoncé would have an award she didn't win, with Beck's name on it, and she'd probably be pissed.

I love Kanye, but Beck is one of the only people in pop music who realt DOESN'T need to "respect artistry" any more than he already does. He's made albums in a dozen different genres, showing an appreciation of everything from hip hop to hardcore to noise to folk to funk to folk to hip hop again. He clearly respects the shit out of music, and he took this all in stride, saying it was an honor to have Kanye up there and even agreeing that Beyoncé should have won.

What a nice dude. Kanye's bustin the wrong balls, and I face-palmed when I read this story. And this is why I don't read about Yeezy.

And anyway, Beck and Beyonce are two of the biggest names in music. As is Kanye. Kanye's really pissed that the panel doesn't give enough awards to black people. But Beck has been ducked around a lot by the Grammys.... Odelay, Mutations, Midnite Vultures and Sea Change have all NOT won album of the year, just as Sasha Fierce, 4 and Beyoncé have not won. But part of me wonders if this is about the fact that 808's, MBDTF & Yeezus (not to mention Watch the Throne) weren't even nominated for album of the year.

Whatever let's not talk about this anymore.

Severian 02.10.2015 06:01 PM

Besides, SYRO should have won.

But Beck has been NOT winning Grammys since Before Kanye first heard Jay-Z. I remember they always gave him Best Alternative Album. He must be tied with Radiohead for that award. It's about time he won something that isn't announced two hours before the show starts.

Now I can't rememberif Odelay actually did win the big award or not. I guess it's possible, but I don't think so.

Kanye needs to stop worrying about this shit. How many truly great albums do win Grammys? Did White Light/White Heat? What about Nevermind? Daydream Nation? Eh? Did Kendrick win? Fuck no. I'm sure Beyoncé will recover.

noisereductions 02.10.2015 06:52 PM

in fairness, Beyonce's album is better than Beck's. And I'm a huge Beck fan. And I really liked Morning Phase.

But also who cares about Grammys?

SuchFriendsAreDangerous 02.10.2015 07:41 PM

Y'all sipping the kool aid. Kanye got too stop trolling us. BECK is the definition of an artist, beyonce is a glorified back up dancer who can sing. She is a "vocalist" not an artist.. and i aint hatin on her by the way. Propz to her but better "artist" than Beck? Do i really have to even respond to that nonsense.. sorry Kanye but while this track came out 14 motherfucking old but more relevant now than ever..

"Would you rather have a lexus or justice a a dream or substance a beamer a necklace or freedom? Me i don't playa hate i just stay away this is REAL hip hop.."

noisereductions 02.10.2015 09:52 PM

it was ALBUM of the year, not ARTIST of the year. Beck is the better artist, but Beyonce's album was better than his.

Again, who gives any F's about a Grammy tho?

SuchFriendsAreDangerous 02.10.2015 10:36 PM

Kanye apparently and dude explicitly said respect artistry

SuchFriendsAreDangerous 02.11.2015 01:27 AM

"The Grammys, if they want real artists to keep coming back, they need to stop playing with us. We ain’t finna play with them no more. “Flawless” Beyoncé video. Beck needs to respect artistry and he should have given his award to Beyoncé. And at this point, we tired of it! Because what happens is, when you keep on diminishing art and not respecting the craft and smacking people in the face after they deliver monumental feats of music. You’re disrespectful to inspiration. And we as musicians have to inspire people who go to work every day, and they listen to that Beyoncé album and they feel like it takes them to another place. Then they do this whole promotional event, and they’ll run the music over somebody’s speech, the artist, because they want a commercial advertising. Like no, we not playing with them no more. And by the way, I got my wife, I got my daughter, and my clothing line, so I’m not finna do nothing to put my daughter at risk. But I am here to fight for creativity, that’s the reason why I didn’t say anything tonight, but y’all know what it meant when ’Ye walked on that stage."

Two things.. (a) kanye is again dissing beck as an artist, is this ninja really that self absorbed or just an asshole and (b) worried bout his clothing line all the more is why Bigger Than Hip Hop explains it all and is still relevant after 14 fucking years. Mainstream rap is a joke, at least tupac was about something

At the airport, a cameraman asked, “Kanye, when you said Beck needs to respect artistry, are you implying he’s not an artist?” West then clarified his comments.

“No, I wasn’t saying Beck, I was saying the Grammys!” said West. “Beck knows that Beyonce should have won.” When another paparazzo asked, “Had you ever heard of Beck before yesterday?” West replied, “Come on, man, I love Beck. But he ain’t have Album of the Year.”

ok now this is already much more reasonable. why didn't he say THAT at the grammys??

i can't see why not. he's gonna come up with a crazy concept again, except this time he's angrier. it's gonna be a dark album.

SuchFriendsAreDangerous 02.11.2015 02:47 AM

Again, kanye is totally free to his lame opinions and the grammys are total shit but let beck have his award. Kanye increasingly comes across as petty and immature and if that's what he going for whatever but i prefer my artists to.have substance instead of being class clowns. Also fuck beyonce sick of everybody have to worship at her idol. Chick was lame ten years ago and lame now. I bet she is embarrassed at kanye nonsense. Attention kanye: the grammys are lame, why give any fucks about it if your're legitimately concerned with art? Im done ranting. And to appease severian YES I HAVE LISTENED TO KANYE ON YOUTUBE to honestly check him out and im just not feeling it which makes his personality even more annoying to me.but hey, i can admit that i am often a hater but I NEVER HATE WITHOUT HONESTLY CHECKING SHIT OUT FIRST

after last year's incident i love how Kendrick didn't even attend the event this year and still won 2 awards. :) :fuckyou: :fuckyou:

SuchFriendsAreDangerous 02.11.2015 02:57 AM

Poor beck, dude finally gets recognized and every body talkin bout kanye and beyonce. Again grammys are total shit and honestly i aint even heard becks "album of the year" but i have heard some of beyonce new shit and it ain't best of nothing so meh.. this is why i miss Nirvana who were the last main stream band to entirely make fun of mainstream music industry and all its self absorbed bullshit. Kurt was like when Dylan went electric or Neil Young released Tonight's The Night.. ZERO FUCKS GIVEN

louder 02.11.2015 06:44 AM

Kanye actually gave his award to Wayne in '08: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ITEDJ6_HR-A

"I want to give this award to Wayne for this year. If this was last year, it would be my award, this year it's Wayne's award, we'll see what happens next year."

this warms my heart. :)

noisereductions 02.11.2015 08:26 AM

honestly the whole thing is stupid to me. Kanye gets upset at award shows. That's like... his thing. It's old hat. It's to be expected. It's NOT NEWS. Nor is it interesting. I dont' know why people are shocked every time it happens or even talk about it. It should just be "oh he did that again. Like every year." I get that this is the kind of self-absorbed stuff that is often why people don't like him. I guess I'm glad that I've always had a good ability to generally not care about these kind of talk-show fodder occurrences.
