if it's any consolation to you, I think that the airbook is a sub-par POS.

funny, to me that's the most attractive offering, i love the idea of the flash hard drive (hitachi got them first actually) and the ultraportable features-- just the price is a bit demented.

and i just hate that you cant change the battery. come on!!!

but i love tiny computers. a bit heavy for the size but eh.

UNCHAIN OSX

i beg to differ, i have never seen a pc with similar spec that would do that live.

that's something the solaris kernel was designed for since the very beginning.
all the multi-core multiprocessors you keep hearing about (core duo's, quad core's, phenom's, etc. etc. etc.)
work better with multithreading.

it's not likely to happen, though, despite the fact that os x has already taken a couple of things from solaris.

but (i was reading) solaris is free and already has an 8-million user base? mostly geek/science/business of course. but also has a way to run contained linux apps. how hard would it be to make it user-friendly?

i tried running redhat 3-4 years ago & it was a nightmare. so ive been looking forward to OSX as "the user friendly UNIX"-- just crippled by limited hardware choices which breaks my balls.

but anyway-- do you foresee any kind of UNIX rising to become a win/mac competitor, not just a tool of hobbyists and specialized business apps?

ps- i gotta crash, will read tomorrow

!@#$%! 01.30.2008 10:24 AM

yeah GUIs are not the issue these days, it's the installing of programs and the availability of software that concerns me. i dont know for example of any unix app that will match dreamweaver for website management-- i hand code everything, but the DW templates & link updates & file management really make my life easier.

now AVID will run on pc or mac (and it's picky about hardware); not on linux. there may be other editors in the future (edius i think worx with linux?) but intallation, support, etc. are a pain.

i remember trying to set up a BT server in redhat 9. jeezus what a fucking nightmare. i gave up fast.

so that' why i have hope in OSX -- it's UNIX, it's user friendly, it's well supported, it has commercial apps. we just gotta free it from its artificial hardware handicaps.

!@#$%! 01.30.2008 12:17 PM

myeah. i'll stick to xp for a long as i can. but look:

there is hope

also,

hackintosh vs. real mac benchmarks

not fucking bad!

A Thousand Threads 01.30.2008 12:32 PM

I'll take a nice and robust IBM Thinkpad over a Mac anytime.

Sure you can put together a super computer. If you're a geek and know what you're doing.
I don't have time for, or interest in semiconductor devices.

!@#$%! 01.30.2008 02:02 PM

yeah i want OSX liberated from overpriced and/or mediocre hardware and within reach of people everywhere, like windows is today.

i want OSX becoming the main PC software, at least until something better comes along.

i'd buy it tomorrow if i could install it in my thinkpad.

david whatever actually has a great idea, apple partnering with lenovo.

thinkpad + osx is my dream laptop

for fucks sakes i'd buy one tomorrow.

anyway, you DO have time and interest-- you're posting here :D

Apple seems to be doing a pretty good job when it comes to satisfying their costumers. Their profits surged astronomically in 2007. 67% in its fiscal fourth quarter alone and it's only going to get better.

More than just a fashion accessory, don't you think?

Phlegmscope 01.30.2008 04:13 PM

Computers.

pish.
