Uncle Junior is watching Paths of Glory in the season premiere of the last season of The Sopranos. He's in a delusional state and Tony asks him get up to eat and then Uncle Junior goes upstairs and gets a gun and comes down and shoots him because in his dementia he thinks Tony is someone from his past.

The premiere for season 6, "Members Only," also utilizes William S. Burroughs' & Bill Laswell's "Seven Souls" for the opening and closing music.

amadeus was awesomeb

atari 2600 12.09.2006 12:19 AM

Life Distortion...as always...quality.

Hey, I think that's the first Ed Wood/Burton mention. It certainly tops any Tennenbaum-y Life Aquatic-y goof. Ditto for just about any John Hughes movie.

I had Amadeus at number 20 and it got bumped. So did The Last Emperor.

You spoiled my next taunt hehe.

My other honorable mentions were Full Metal Jacket and Midnight Cowboy that were in the top 20 until they were cut.

Oh How
I do love Repo Man though...make that any Alex Cox film...(on the subject of The Last Emperor and Alex Cox, watch the Kurosawa: The Last Emperor (1999) documentary.
and How
I love The Big Lebowski...make that any Cohen Bros. film.

porkmarras 12.09.2006 12:23 AM

Wow!This is like those real 'end of the year' polls. You know, the ones that matter.

davenotdead 12.09.2006 12:24 AM

john waters stuff is such shit...can't say i wasn't expecting it though...and how can this thread be this long without one mention of Alice in Wonderland? also, City of God was not mentioned enough, it is really an amazing experience...and the Passion of the Christ...A History of Violence...and Gangs of New York (Daniel Day-Lewis! Come on People!)...ok...now i feel better...also, I saw Miyazaki and Spirited Away mentioned, but I think Princess Mononoke is his best, though i love spirited away and his other stuff as well, but PM stands head and shoulders above the rest to me....

ALIEN ANAL 12.09.2006 12:35 AM

has anyone here seen the wizard of oz 2, i really think its a great film and recommend it. Realy different from the stupid musical first one.

I think the only Disney animated feature that's in my top 100 is Bambi.
While Alice in Wonderland has more thrills and spills, Bambi is a true delight for the ages. The animation, storytelling, editing, soundtrack, voicings and (animated) cinematography are bar-none.

City of God is fucking intense.

The Passion of the Christ is a quivering pile of poo next to Scorsese's The Last Temptation of Christ adaptation from the very great Nikos Kazanstakis novel. And it's even better than Gangs of New York, although, as you alluded, Daniel Day-Lewis is extremely underrated.

A History of Violence (& Cronenberg, in general, is overrated...not bad, but overrated...sort of like Brian De Palma).

I think Spirited Away is best. That movie really gets into your head. I rented it with McCabe & Mrs. Miller, and Bloody Sunday (all good) and remember coming away from it in a good way.

Paul Greengrass (Bloody Sunday, "Bourne" movies) is an amazing talent.
United 93 is maybe the best film of 2006.
The Departed is number two.
Three...perhaps Half Nelson.

Dude, I'm stoked...and I gotta tell you...I've been meanin to tell you that I just like saw this movie ---
it's Chocolate Star Wars*...you gotta like totally see it, man.

(*Homer's video request)

On a side-note and hate me if you will (no one here will hehe), because these are good movies, but The Wizard of Oz, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Harvey, It's a Wonderful Life, Miracle on 34th Street, Casablanca, The Maltese Falcon, It Happened One Night, The African Queen and Gone With the Wind do not crack my top 100.

TV on the Radio plays Conan after the break...
Conan's got this wacky www.hornymanatee.com thing goin' down. He mentioned the url address as a one-off improvisational joke and since there was no such site, FCC rules made the show buy the domain name they mentioned on-air.

atari 2600 12.09.2006 01:34 AM

As for a short list of other noteworthy B&W movies:
(the ones I mentioned in the top 20 obviously: Psycho, Dr. Stangelove (full title withheld ...hell, I'm writing just as much anyway...I should really stop typing) Raging Bull & Young Frankenstein)
...clumsy
>transition...
On the Waterfront, In Cold Blood, Cape Fear, The Night of the Hunter, The Seventh Seal, High Noon, The Incident, Targets, Touch of Evil, Citizen Kane, Double Indemnity, To Kill a Mockingbird, Paths of Glory, Lolita, Some Like it Hot, The Apartment, The Creature From the Black Lagoon, the original King Kong, all the Hitchcocks, Chaplins...all that is fantastic.
why a period?

No one has listed Rebel Without A Cause yet.
A valid argument could be made that approximately haha eight of your picks may be better than Rebel Without A Cause. It leaves the other twelve picks in the dust, however.

Please excuse me, haha.

UVRAY 12.09.2006 02:16 AM

You've just about included all my own favorites there, Cryptowonder. Such stellar taste in films, if I may say.
:D

I would add Betty Blue and Barfly.

I also recently watched Matt Dillon's performance as Henry Chinaski in Factotum. I didn't like the film first time but after watching it again I do. I don't think it's as good as Mickey Rourke in Barfly but it's an accurate portrayal of Bukowski's character.

luxinterior 12.09.2006 02:16 AM

At one point I was way into Rebel Without A Cause. You know, I am kind of in the mood to watch it now, hahaha. But I started to think that Giant and East of Eden are probably better. Love all three though.

And yeah, I definitely forgot On The Waterfront. Don't know how that happened.

I agree and will go as far as to say it's not nearly as good. Plus, no Faye Dunaway. I generally like Matt Dillon though.

well, im really not a bambi person...give me alice, sword in the stone, and jungle book...jungle book has without a doubt the best music, its rad....and even the black cauldron when you're feeling dark, or the 3 caballeros when in a party mood...actually, the 3 caballeros gives JB a run for its money for best music....old-school disney ruled so much...michael eisner is going to hell.

perhaps i do need to watch Gangs of new york again, as really it could have been a much better movie...i was just so dazzled with DDL...really, it was my first DDL experience, and he just had everyone else by the balls for the whole movie, even scorcese...i just loved the atmosphere and DDL i suppose, as im really not a big fan of dicaprio or cameron diaz...

i dont care what you say, the passion is amazing, and please dont even try to lump it in with that 'Last temptation" shite....

I agree with you that De Palma and Cronenberg are over-rated, and that may be a reason why I love AHOV so much....I was expecting to label it as 'more Cronenberg drivel', but instead I felt like someone right-hooked me on the jaw...the pacing is brilliant....the violence is quick, brutal, and not hollywood-glorifying at all...there is remorse...its so real...i am just so impressed with this movie.

atari 2600 12.09.2006 02:47 AM

The Jungle Book is a fun movie.
---
It (A History of Violence) beats the hell out of Crash and some of the other big movies that year. Wait...it was last year haha. Mortensen is good. Ed Harris is good at what he does. As storied as Cronenberg is, A History of Violence is probably his best.
Of course, it could never have the shocking impact of Videodrome or some of his other movies, but that was another time.

Simple Men (1992)

I've felt the need to alter my top 20 very slightly. Yes, I took out the John Waters film, not because I don't think the movie is great, it is, but I thought of a film that I loved even more and while I suppose I could have dropped one of the other ones at the bottom, towards the end I was sort of struggling to come up with two or three more to make it twenty. "A Christmas Story" came to mind and I thought that had to be up there, I've seen that movie infinite times, I can qoute many lines from it and let's face it, its one of the greatest comedies of all-time.

Bukowski didn't think so.

Tokolosh mentioned several Fuller movies.
This year I got to see the Naked Kiss, Fixed Bayonets, Pickup on South Street and Shock Corridor.
They all pleased me a lot.
He knew how to go fast without leaving the details that count behind.
The Naked Kiss story is really strange.
The use of colour in Shock Corridor is really effecient - colour blurts out two or three times in this black & white film.

Another guy used colour versus black & white without any warning (i.e. in the Wizard of Oz, the colour parts are apart from the black & white ones, they don't mingle) was Albert Lewin for A Picture of Dorian Gray. To show the portrait itself. I liked that movie quite a lot, even though Angela Lansbury ain't as young-looking as Wilde's character.
Lewin also shot Pandora, a movie that made me chuckle for two reasons : one, it has Marius Goring (from the Red Shoes) belching, two James Mason kissing Ava Gardner is irresistible. She was taller than him, but someone didn't want the audience to notice it. But it shows that he's standing on something.

Damnit, this is the thread in which I spend most of my time preparing for (subconsciously) , and when it actually get here I find myself way too hesitant topost anything other than this excuse. I believe I have way to many movies rattling around in my head and not enough patience or time to give an accurate, non-edit reply to the question at hand.

Once Were Warriors is New Zealand, but yeah, it is a pretty good film. Pretty intense.

Chopper is a great film! Many memorable lines.

I'll add The Proposition on that list too. Another great Australian film.

yeah, the proposition was fantastic. nick cave is a dark man.

Dead-Air 12.10.2006 04:32 AM

I'm sure I'll forget something that I like more than something I'll include in the list, but what the hell. Here's 20, though I can't pick the order:

Wings of Desire
The Man Who Fell to Earth
Brazil
Planet of the Apes (original)
Liquid Sky
La Dolce Vita
Ran
Slacker
A Scanner Darkly
Drugstore Cowboy
Dawn of the Dead
On the Beach
A Clockwork Orange
High Fidelity
Blow Up
1984
The Lord of the Rings (impossible to separate the movies)
Superstar (the Karen Carpenter Story)
Soylent Green
Decline of Western Civilization

Tokolosh 12.10.2006 05:09 AM

Slacker is great. I just wish they'd remaster it, 'cause the audio is terrible.
The outdood scenes are the worst. Passing cars make it almost impossible to hear the dialogue.

I love how The Naked Kiss starts off with a bang. The fight where she gets her wig pulled of her head, and she then beats the crap out of her pimp. All this happens with a jazz soundtrack in the background. There's a beautiful song sung by one of the handicapped kids at the hospital, where she goes to work, so that she can change her life and leave the past behind. She earns her respect from the community, only to loose it again later.

I highly recommend The Big red One, if you haven't seen it yet.
