well i'm reading UMBERTO ECO's IL PENDOLO DI FOUCAULT.
Baphomet used to be teh one who those Templar guys were raving about.
But all in all, the very point of this thread is: as soon as it's nonsense, it's occult... therefore it's EVIL becuz we do not get it. I think that the SY lyrics play a lot with stuff like this. What you can't understand SCARES THE CRAP OUT OF YOU, mainly becuz of the fact that we fear those who are different from us. old stuff.

i found the YOUTH reference (they're in their 50ies but the're THE YOUTH) to be very evocative tho.

is RR really coming out on 06 06 06?

i finally opened this thread - i thought for sure it must be a joke. i can't believe it's serious. all this "please, please, someone ask them" bullshit is pretty hilarious too. like you'll just totally, like, die if you don't know the answer.

anyway, the answer is simple. if sonic youth were really satanists, they would have the kind of fame and fortune that led zeppelin, who really sold their souls to the devil, did.

okay, so that was a joke, but just because a band throws the word satan into their lyrics doesn't make them a satanist any more than throwing the word god into a song makes them christian. digging hard and finding a few satanic references makes you sound like the same people who put out the 20/20 special in 1984 on satanic hair metal (though they had a lot more to work with, even though all those bands used satanic imagery and weren't really satanists either.) marylin manson, he's a satanist and he's open about it. i think part of being a satanist would entail being open about it to get any benefits from the prince of darnkess, though that's just my assumption. i can't believe this thread is nine pages long and i can't believe i'm adding to it.

jheii 04.03.2006 03:48 PM

That sounds like something a satanist might say.

sellouteater 04.03.2006 03:50 PM

wait, this is a serios thread?

sellouteater 04.03.2006 04:08 PM

ha ha i would give you some reputation points for that but it says i have to spread them around first.

Grete 04.04.2006 02:25 AM

schizophrenicroom 04.10.2006 10:12 PM

jesus died for somebody's sins but not sonic youth's

I'm listening to SATAN IS BORING now, and it's nothing to conquer, the fight is good! Your flesh has a limit....

You are asking, if SY are satanists?

They must be.

See, I've seen Him, and he's beutiful. Theres no deception. An angel, beutifullest one. Boring, true. But really good-looking.

Love.

mikko 04.10.2006 10:45 PM

Time is satan. Fuck time. Satan is love.

SolidGoldHell 04.11.2006 12:51 AM

This thread still lives? Take it outside of this forum. Religion and music don't mix (look at Creed)

HaydenAsche 04.11.2006 05:02 PM

They did a sweet cover of "Left Down and Hanging Around". Do NOT deny this.

Sufjan and mwY are two of my favorite artists/bands of all time.

I must say that when I'm in a "chill" mood, I dig Pedro the Lion and Page France. Cheap aural indulgence.

noumenal 04.19.2006 07:24 PM

Personally, I think this thread is pretty clever manipulation on AssBlaster's part. Some may call it trolling, but whatever it is, it's funny.

Anyway, about h8kurdt's post: music has its roots in religion. Almost every aspect of western music has its origins in church music. Some of the greatest musical works of the western world were directly influenced by religion . AssBlaster is right about Bach - I listen to the St. Matthew Passion even though I don't believe in Jesus. And I like Messiaen too, and I'm not Catholic. This is really lame of me to go on at such length about some old post that was probably made as a joke anyway, but I also have to address your (h8kurdt's) signature. It was inevitable since I'm a music theorist.

You must like Debussy a lot, so you know that his music is very spiritual and apparently uncalculated (this is disputable). I like the quote because the "music theory" that Debussy was refering to (or his translator...where is that quote from anyway?) was indeed pretty shitty. Theorists had a lot of ridiculous ideas that were pretty unmusical and wacky back then and they often just added programmatic little stories to instrumental pieces and passed it off as "analysis". Music theory today is as similar to music theory back then as modern psychology is to Freud - owes a lot to it while dismissing it. But what a lot of people think of as "theory" today is just rudiments of music. Debussy benefitied A LOT for traditional "theory" studies such as harmony and counterpoint and form. What he didn't like was understandably pretty stupid, but if you think his quote is reaffirming the idea that learning scales and key signatures is pointless, well I think you're missing something. There is a quote from Hindemith that you would love - he's one of the most important theorists and composers of the 20th century, but he despised "theory". I'll try to find the quote - he goes on about how theorists are just musicians that couldn't cut it as performers or composers and there's a lot of truth in what he's saying. I don't know what he'd think about being considered such an important theorist today...I'll shut up now.

hematoma6 05.25.2006 08:15 PM

it seems to me that any successful, self-respecting satanist would have headlined at W's first inaugural ball....

m^a(t)h 05.25.2006 08:59 PM

iiI

something 05.26.2006 05:07 PM

maybe it's just the opposite man, maybe there actually christian rock and all there songs have hidden messages like "love jesus" and "praise the lord" i think that would be a hell of a lot scarier then if they did have relations with the princess of darkness

kingcoffee 05.26.2006 07:10 PM

"Are Sonic Youth satanists?"

This is the dumbest question I've heard in quite some time. No, they are not satanists! Thurston grew up christian as did Lee (catholic). Don't know about the rest of the band, but Im sure they were brought up with some form of Judeao-Christian religious stuff. Thurston has a roman cross tatooed on his left arm, and I dont think it's out of sarcasm. I'm sure that they don't always agree with the bullshit that religious people pull off through the Church and in the name of God (SY are liberals, after all), but I can't see them ever worshiping anything as stupid as Satan. Satan doesn't exist. And God probably doesn't either.

kingcoffee 05.27.2006 03:26 PM

P.S. I absolutely LOVE the Baby Jesus butt plug idea. Where can I get one for my preist?

Shannon 05.28.2006 03:19 AM

In all seriousness: I read somewhere that Thurston was brought up Catholic but is now an atheist.

punknomuerto 05.28.2006 05:36 AM

definitive

alyasa 05.28.2006 05:40 AM

No, but I am.

punknomuerto 05.28.2006 05:58 AM

we only come out at night, like the smashing pumpkin song,
i think sonic youth are humans that are tending more towards nature
the nature of electronics, the electric guitarr buzzing simpnonically,
calling god

and they play the scene of death,
