Sonic Youth Gigs With Gilmore Girls

April 06, 2006, 3:10 PM ET

Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.
Sonic Youth principals Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon, plus their daughter Coco on shakers, will appear on the season finale of the WB drama "Gilmore Girls" to perform an acoustic version of the new song "What a Waste." The show, of which the Moore/Gordon family is a professed fan, will be taped tomorrow (April 7) in Los Angeles and will air May 9.

As previously reported, "What a Waste" can be found on Sonic Youth's next album, "Rather Ripped," which will arrive June 13 via Geffen.

In other Sonic Youth news, Moore has been chosen to curate the Nightmare Before Christmas edition of the All Tomorrow's Parties festival later this year. The event will be held Dec. 8-10 in Somerset, England, and will feature performances by Sonic Youth and Iggy and the Stooges. The full lineup will be announced in the coming months.

Before it begins a short West Coast tour opening for Pearl Jam in July, Sonic Youth will perform April 20 in Paris and June 18 at the Bonnaroo Festival in Manchester, Tenn. Moore is also scheduled to discuss "Rather Ripped" tonight on Air America Radio's "Marc Maron Show."

a big part of me wants to scream "WHY GOD WHY?!?!?!?" but chances are i'll probably end up watching it due to nothing else better to do

Edit: never mind. it's during my finals week. chances are probably not.

krastian 04.11.2006 11:09 PM

Yeah the whole thing is pretty weird, but I'll probably end up watching it because I am a sick fuck.

Chris Lawrence 04.11.2006 11:38 PM

amazing! second best show on prime time tv (and there are only 2 good shows on primetime tv)..

samantha. 04.13.2006 02:57 AM

I admit that I enjoy watching Gilmore Girls, so I'll be definitely watching it regardless if Thurston, Kim and Coco are in it. I doubt I would be watching it any time soon as Australia is behind in terms of episodes.

ithinkimissyou 04.13.2006 03:09 AM

They dont seem to show GG on tv over here anymore. Didnt they make a quip about the Dead Kennedy's touring without Jello a few seasons ago as well? Hah.

I'd love to see this.

sonik life 04.13.2006 06:30 AM

I've never seen it, but I'm curious. Does the UK get it? Somebody has said it airs on Nickelodeon or Hallmark - any ideas?

kingcoffee 04.13.2006 10:10 AM

Now this just irritates me. Iv'e (unfortunately) seen the Gilmore Girls before. And it SUCKED!!! This is a horrible show. Not much more you can say about it. They talk so fast and respond so quickly that it makes it sound like their conversations are witty reparte but it's just annoying and stupid. I don't know why Thurston< KIm and their daughter would do this. Maybe Cocoa likes the show, she's kinda young. The show is geared toward girls her age. This reminds of the Flaming Lips performning Turn It On on Beverly Hills 90210 in 1995. A really great indie/alternative band performing respectable material on a bland, watered-down, cheesy, teen comedy-drama. It makes me die just a little inside. But I'll still watch the show with the sound off until SY appear and perform.
