I got lucky and found a "like new" one over here in italy, yeahhh. SpectralJ, what's your take on analog delays? I want an MXR Carbon Copy, but costs quite a lot over here, uff... I want a delay with kinda "long" delay times, that would be a nice choice imo but I never got to try one live... I know you're a EH freak :D, so perhaps you have some tips on their memory line (memory toy any good? I heard a few demos online, but my feelings are mixed on it ha ha). |
_slavo_, that looks like a mindblowing effect to "experience", I'd get lost in it. I'm all about "3-4 knobs top" lately ah ahaaaaa.. I even "abandoned" the idea of getting a DL4...
|
another new fav for guitarzzz (which I don't have):
Devi Ever Disaster Fuzz http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OnC9B...eature=channel "Guitar Volume Flatulence" FTW!! |
Besides, every fuzz demo should start with a McLusky song riff.

I haven't tried any of the EH analog delays actually!! I've only owned one analog delay, and it was an Arion SAD-3. For the Memory Boy/Toy I'd listen to demos. Apparently there are problems with them having different delay times based on what the temperature is, but that's supposed to be fixed with the new one, the Deluxe Memory Boy. For about 175 USD, you get tap-tempo analog delay with ratios, and expression control over the modulation rate, modulation depth, delay time, or feedback. Also has a gain control. ![]() Other than that, there is the Malekko 616, which is supposed to be really good sounding. I think it uses the same chip as the Deluxe Memory Boy/Memory Boy/Memory Toy/Carbon Copy. These new delays are cheap because they use Cool Audio chips, which are reproductions of older Panasonic chips which aren't made anymore. . . though supposedly the Cool Audio chips don't really sound like the Panasonic ones (which as still used, but are super expensive because you can only get new-old-stock, which is dwindling. The EHX Deluxe Memory Man has this problem, and will be gone within a couple of years because they won't have the chips anymore.) But here's a pic of the 616: ![]() |
Thanks for the inputs, much appreciated.
Yes, those malekkos are sweet sounding things. I like the controls for the mod on top (while they're "inside" the pedal in the Carbon Copy..not that I plan to play too much with those, I need a good analog delay, no matter what added effects it has). Problem is, they're pretty hard to find over here (and even used cost a lot more compared to usa msrp), and even considering an order from usa, shipping + import taxes would make the price go quite a lot higher (they calculate import taxes on the whole package value, item+shipping costs...damn). Listening to demos online I like Carbon Copy and Malekko over the memory toy (which would be my EH "alternative" coz I don't want more than 3-4 knobs tops :p, I don't need too many features). I should pay you to buy me stuff and send anonymous packages with fake low-value declarations......heh. example: price on malekko's website: 149$. official malekko international (european) dealers-> only one has the 616 available, price: 151 fuckin EUROS. GLOBAL ECONOMY my balls. |
Yeah. . . it sucks for us too. When I went to Europe a couple years ago I converted money to euros and felt kind of raped.
Do you get taxed on presents sent from the US? I know some countries don't tax you if it is a present. |
Once that worked fine, but customs officers nowadays will check every "suspicious" package...and packages with "GIFT" declaration are the most suspicious ones :D.
I think I'll end up buying the Carbon Copy used, which is more reasonably priced in the used market over here, then I'll order the Malekko from the official site. 149$+int shipping is definitely a good price converted in euros, would be 121 Euros shipped, with added taxes shoud be around 150 :(, still cheaper than 151+shipping from frickin' euro sellers... Then I'll keep the one I like the most and resell the other one. Sounds like a plan to me. |
I'm assuming they x-ray packages like in the airport. Because if they didn't, I could totally sew pedals into teddy bears.
|
Just ordered this used:
![]() Bought this once awhile ago and returned it because i thought it sounded awful with my practice amp (a puny solid state fender) and thus didn't really give it a good chance on my fender twin reverb (unfortunate) plus it was at the going price of $150/$160... thought i'd give it another shot this time around as i ended getting it for under $100... only wish it was the original version w/o the scoop and crunch adjustments and internal trimpots, it just seems like too much to tweak for a fuzz, well it could be fun to be patient and find its "sweet spot"... |
Does it make sense to use a Voodoo Lab tremolo with a bass? I can't find demos with basses, I'm afraid the low frequencies could sound like shit "tremolo-ed"...but considering it's basically a sort of volume effect I might be totally wrong...
any input will be appreciated, a guy is selling one in my city and I'm keeping an eye on the thing.. |
just got one of these...it's tiny.
![]() |
It sure is!
I've been checking both that and the older spring chicken, but prices are a bit too high (here)... Are the knobs a little "wobbly" (is that even a word?) or do they feel sturdy enough? I read around the web that some malekko's like the ekko616 have washers that keep knobs more firmly in place, while others are a bit more "movable" haha, I suck at expressing concepts. p.s. if anybody has suggestions on my voodoo lab tremolo + bass question a couple posts above I'll be grateful :D... |

I suppose if you tend to play quite long sustained notes then it might give you some interesting results but if it's more standard short, more rhythmic notes that you play, then I just think it'll make things sound a bit all over the place, with whole notes likely to just disappear altogether in the mix. I'd say no. |
I would agree from a mixing point of view, I think it would turn the bass sound to mud and because of the low freqs shifting it would make a kind of doppler effect and make it sound somewhat out of time.

I'm starting my own homebuilt guitar pedal business pretty soon if anyone's interested.

I saw Zachary Vex at a show the other day.

Thanks for the inputs on the tremolo+bass thing, I'd use it only for weird/longer sustained/semi chords-like stuff, definitely not for rhythmic dunn-du-dunn-dungs. I might just get a cheap one to see if i like "the idea", then buy a good sounding one ha ha. Danelecto tuna melt? mah. I've no money so it's not an imminent dilemma. |
this is first design I'm working on.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTR6Ok8s6rY Basically you can plug it into any pedal that has an expression input, and it will sequence through different expression settings, jumping from one to another. |
That thing is INSANE!!!
|
Holy shit, looks nice Julian! You should definitely keep us updated.
Just ordered woohoo! ![]() |
^^^
I wanted one of those for a lot of years, then suddenly I lost all my interest in it and settled for totally different stuff. Weird. It sure is a nice thingy, anyway. Price paid? |
I really, really, really want one of these at the moment, but they're seriously silly money and i'm a seriously broke, seriously shit guitar player.

edit: Can't wait for it to arrive, I'm so stoked! |
Got a Deluxe Memory Boy the other day.
|
How do you like it mang?
|
It kicks ass. I really like it. It does a lot of stuff. You probably know more about it than me, mang.
|
maybe, I do obsessively read the manuals of pedals I am interested in
|
The low cut and sequencer options are neat additions I didn't even know about til I bought it. You can get some real long filthy delays with this.
|
the infamous Line 6 DL4, i scored one for $150 US used, can't see paying the $250 that they seem to go for and more... plus they seem to have realibility issues based on half the reviews i've read and friends/musicians that have one and their experiences. i've had mine for about 6 months its starting to act a little weird i only use the looper function and the delay sound isn't always there wheni first plug it in, i have to fiddle with the knobs and trigger the switches to get it to start working normal. then everything is fine, i've read that sometimes doing a system reset to default settings corrects this (powering up while holding the A and D switches) but its only temporary. anyways i've done much research on trying to mod primarily to get a more balanced volume out of the delay, which is my major draw back on this device that i have just about crank the mix knob to hear loops... its a matter of replacing two resisters (R35 & R36) to 24k, i think. yet i'll probably not mod this pedal it just seems to delicate for what they cost and i've modded alot of stuff.

LEts see
Guitar: Epiphone SG strung left handed Amp: Fender super champ Effects: DOD Phaser, Cry Baby, MXR blue box deciding on a EHX big muff....dont know? |
Quote:
if you want a big beefy wall of fuzz distortion with plenty of sustain thats what a big muff can do, its not really good at being subtle, nice for screaming lead one note lines and pending on which type of muff pedal they can be good on chords. |
ordered a Zvex Lo-Fi Loop Junky.
![]() I think they're ridiculously overpriced but after waiting for one cheap to come along for a year or so, finally found one cheap. Probably not everyone's cup'o tea, but I'm an admitted loop addict. here's some examples of them: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hJoZW...eature=related http://media1.zvex.com/lofi.mov http://proguitarshop.com/store/loope...op-junky-p-666 |

Check out the EHX "English Muff'n" too. Tube valves FTW..... |
Quote:
I remember looking into these, i think nels cline uses one... whats the loop length that can be done with these? i ended up w/ the line 6 dl4 which i strictly only use the loop function, has some less and more functionability compared to the loop junky. dl4: upto 14 seconds, or 28 seconds loop on half speed mode. reverse loop capability, 1/2 or double speed pending on what speed the original loop was recorded. overdubbing capability w/ simultaneous toggle between reverse and 1/2 or double speed of older loop. optional delay with the loop. |
A friend gave me a Roland DJ-mixer for free few months ago. As I don't do dj'ing, I haven't had much use for it, but I think I can use it if I ever get around to do some home recording wankery. It does have built in effects, sounds like shit, but might work for some guitar / keyboard sounds.
|

I don't have it yet. Just ordered it mid last week. It says it's 20 sec. The Loop Junky is definitely a one trick pony... but it seems to be a very unique pony. but, saying that, the variations of warp'ish effects is pretty broad, so maybe a cool one. I've never tried the Line 6. I use a EHX 2880 multitrack looper, for looping. The 2880 is pretty expensive, but it's on another level where loopers are concerned. |
hey, recommendations for good shops in Atlanta and Washington?
Possibly with malekko stuff? I'm hoping to get an ekko 616 (too overpriced here in europe...) thanks in advance, pardon the personal use of a public thread... |
