All things considered, I actually dig that part of Supernaut BETTER than if Santana had actually did it, because it is is such a mystifying contrast of styles it is like snow in the desert. You are befuddled by it, forced inward to try and make sense of this sonically induced synesthesia..

I get the same effect from the jammy breakdown in Symptom of the Universe

"Woman child of love's creation, come and step inside my dreams.. in your eyes I see no sadness you are all that loving needs.."

Fucking shit, that is epic like Homer or Shakespeare

The power of contrast is the most moving in music

Rob Instigator 05.30.2013 02:40 PM

Symptom does have an amazing breakdown.

Sabbath always had more interesting sounds to my ears than the Zepp. I find a lot of Zepp riffs very stilted, and I hate that hipster-ass Robert Plant... ;)

The hipsters now dress like hybrid of goths and ravers from the very early 90s i.e. black bomber jackets, those round john lennon style glasses but with black lenses, gold jewellery, tight trousers and a black beanie like this:

Like all the misfits outside the YMCA in Whitechapel Road. It's no wonder I'm so confused.

SuchFriendsAreDangerous 05.30.2013 04:05 PM

yes, I always think of hipsters are not being locked into one style per se, so much as being part of a constantly revolving series of very cliched "looks" from different eras and times, most often horribly mismatched. Essentially, hipster is the revisting of that terrible time in the early 1990s when cross-colors and surrealist cuts/styles were in vogue. Today hipsters look like transplanted anachronistic mannequins ;)

I have always thought that M.I.A, who I think defines the hipster sense of fashion in London at least, always takes inspiration from the window shops you get in the Aldgate/ Whitechapel areas because of their battered, randomly put together, wholesale nature. I'm not sure why I have quoted your post now.

Derek 05.30.2013 05:06 PM

threads like these are why i never visit here anymore. bye.

Genteel Death 05.30.2013 05:07 PM

Don't be a hipster, Derek.

Trama 05.30.2013 05:19 PM

I think the pejorative sense of the word has less to do with fashion and more with a certain blasé attitude that got associated with the term.

Toilet & Bowels 05.30.2013 05:21 PM

is that intellectual or simply hipster then?

demonrail666 05.30.2013 07:58 PM

Hipsters are lovely. They keep me in a job and are far too blasé to ever complain about how shit I am at it.

Genteel Death 05.31.2013 07:29 AM

Say what you like but this take on the ''hipster look'' is lovely.

Derek keeps saying he's gonna leave then comes back. we've got it, you're too good for us. just go.

Genteel Death 05.31.2013 08:57 AM

A 75-year-old woman from Offenburg in Germany, was kept awake at night by a colony of ants ringing her doorbell. According to the Metro the woman became so fed-up with the nocturnal bell-ringing that she contacted the police, in the hope of catching the prankster.
After an investigation, local police discovered the culprit was a colony of “prank playing ants.”
They said the insects had built such a big home that the nest pressed the switching elements together, keeping the bell ringing.
In the end, officers removed the nest with a knife, allowing the lady to enjoy a peaceful night’s sleep for the first time in a while.
There was no news on the ants but we wouldn’t be surprised if they’re off playing pranks somewhere else.
It’s a small pity Saul Bass didn’t include such larks when he made Phase IV, his cult film about intelligent ants at war with humanity.

too good for you maybe, not everyone else though.

but no seriously, you think sonic youth fans would be less close-minded and judgmental about how other people choose to present themselves. you're judging people by throwing a label on them and it is lame lame lame, all of you could be branded a 'hipster' just for the simple fact that you're posting on a SONIC YOUTH messageboard of all things but i guess none of you have been accused of being insincere about the things you enjoy because of your clothes (or any other trivial bullshit that doesn't matter) even if the opposite is true.

i swear i've had this argument on here before and only glice of all people agreed with me so maybe i'm getting nowhere with this.

dead_battery 05.31.2013 09:56 AM

the idea that its not ok to feel like you are better than this place because you'd be stuck up and thus not rolling around in each others faeces in the name of faux egalitarianism is exactly the type of shit that not agreeing with makes me better than anyone of this fucking board because of.

message boards are dead and sonic youth is a band for aged gen-xers

there is no intrinsic virtue in any of this.

anyway, i don't give a shit about your non-prescription glasses and i hope you stick around because, eh, i like this board and monocultures are boring and you're not an idiot.

dead_battery 05.31.2013 10:08 AM

why do we stay? is it addiction? is it fear? is it failure? is it because we want to remain in stasis without facing the crumbling horror of our bodies and identities?

louder 05.31.2013 10:11 AM

it bothers me a lot more in real life. my friends are really concerned with it, because our whole culture is basically an imitation of the U.S. but it usually takes two-three years for everyone to catch up. so "hipster" is currently the new cool thing to say.

you listen to indie music? you're a hipster. you listen to mainstream music? you're a hipster.

i tried to have a serious conversation with this one girl, but she ends up calling everything she doesn't understand "hipster" and it ends at that.

language is coined by usage and usage is always shifting hence demographics matter. there is no big dictionary in the sky. it doesn't have to (can't really) mean only one thing to/for all. it all depends on where and how and by whom and to whom it's said, and how much misunderstanding is always part of the meaning anyway. in other words, communication is a kind of hopeful illusion.

Sure. I'm talking about The Peoplez of the Internet though. In the flesh if someone annoys you you can either ignore them or when you can't you have the option of spitting on their face and the chop their balls off and feed them to a cat. You know that already.
