Some people need to realise that no one has the answers, and those who do, it's extremely unlikely anyone on this board does. This goes for the Nirvana debate. Neither parties are right or wrong. And it's silly to pretend otherwise. No band is better than any other band.

I guess you never saw the Goo Goo Dolls live? |

c'mon standards and criteria |
HAHA.

According to who? Everything you say is just your opinion. Certain people try and say what they think is the truth like it is the truth. Even if it happened to be the truth, the way they present that statement or revelation makes what they are saying appear anything but the 'truth'. |

ok well the thread is called your top ten so i'm certainly discouraging arguments and just trying to simply promote discussion. standards and criteria according to history. |
I'm not against people putting their opinion across, but they should realise that it is just their opinion. If that opinion is shared by others, it doesn't make it anymore justified. If you put a band up I don't like, I'm not going to say that they shouldn't be on your list.
|
Ahhh ok, you've misinterpreted what I have been saying, Androol. I wasn't against your thread (I posted just after your opening post). Although, I am against people saying that a certain band, whoever it should be, should not be on someones list, Nirvana for example, just because they don't like them. It's all personal opinion and everyone should be able to respect that.
|
the whole nirvana debate started because alyassa said every list should include nirvana and i pointed out that while objectively speaking nirvana are not as important as most bands from the last 25 years from the u.s. artistically-speaking, anyone has the right to include or exclude whatever band they felt like.

1 . the replacements
i think that sonic youth is vastly overrated ! |
haha ok what should i get
all i ever had was tim and i only liked about 1/4 of it |
Quote:
Perhaps, but the Replacements' music has aged FAR more poorly. |
Was The Replacements reunion a reality?
|
excellent point
|
Quote:
if by reunion you mean "paul and tommy got together to record two new 'mats songs while chris mars stood there approving" then yes, it was a reality. ohh, and can't see why would you pit sy with the 'mats, they are completely different bands, the only common ground between them was that they were bands from the 80's that were not signed to major record labels. |
Greatest American band of the last 25 years:
Simple Plan Period. I'm right. |
when did swans start? 82? swans i guess.
|
simple plan are canadian.
|
Oh. Well of all the bands to make a mistake about, I'm glad it was them.

i'm listening to Filth for my first time right now |
do you like it, then?
|
Cop is one of my favorite albums of all time, and Children Of God isn't too shabby either.
|
Quote:
...what? they were both signed to major labels... |
Eventually.

yeah its really cool but i just listened to Bad Moon Rising before so Thank You is losing a little steam for me at the moment. I actually havent gotten the whole thing yet and this is as far as ive gotten. I listened to Public Castration is a Good Thing and again i was struck by the similarities to BMR and CIS/KYI. i have to say that from an initial listen Sy seems to also be giving most of the stuff Swans is but with a lot more dynamics. |

awesome i'll get these next |
Try Cop.
Seriously, one of the most brutal and unrelenting LPs I have heard to date. CoG is great too, as it bridges the gap nicely between the "Heavy" Swans and the "pretty" Swans. Some great Jarboe tunes on that one! |

2)I left out all solo artists even though the USA,somehow, seems to produce greater(i'm generalizing here so don't start the whinging, folks) amounts of talented ones than bands themselves. 3)Diamanda Galas is indeed american(she was born is San Diego-California) |
I'd recommend Cop & Filth to anyone. If they'd maintained that high standard thay would definitely have been in my top 25.
Oh, and the Raping A Slave EP if you can still get it. |

Oh, he makes me LAUGH. |
Why?
|
I don't know really. He just makes me laugh. Can't add anything witty or clever, he just makes me laugh, particularly when he dances. He just looks funny.

Yeah, but he IS funny.
