haha.. i don't give a fuck about the title

i just want a bit less of clean guitars. no pavement tuning and a bit more of distortion and noise.

barnaclelapse 01.16.2009 10:43 AM

I want this album to be so awesome that Christ himself gets arrested for illegally downloading it.

silverfreepress (sdasher) 01.16.2009 11:04 AM

I thought so but I had to make sure. There was this movie that came out Summer 2005 and it was horrible, the title Eternal. It was a vampire movie based on well I'm attaching the review. I got some email about attending this screening and took a friend. There was audible laughter from the audience, I heard the afterparty was people just throwing up on their selves. Here is the Times review.

Anybody else witness this? No? Thats what I thought.

"But "Eternal" is quite possibly the dullest, least sexy lesbian vampire movie I have ever seen." -Jeannette Catsoulis

Sonic Youth Staying Weird On Matador Debut

Sonic Youth

January 16, 2009 11:59 AM ET

Cortney Harding, N.Y.
Thurston Moore promises "heavy ass weirdo hooks" aplenty on Sonic Youth's as-yet-untitled Matador debut, due this summer.

"When I started writing, I was immersed in listening to the Wipers," he tells Billboard. "'No Way,' the first song we recorded, has a total Wipers vibe, if the Wipers were a No Wave band."

Moore says lyrics have been inspired by black metal bands, although he promises he's not mimicking their delivery. Other tracks include "Leaky Life Boat," which compares being alive to being in the aforementioned sinking ship, and "Burning Shame," a tribute to the late Fred "Sonic" Smith.

"We're super inspired to make a fresh start," says Moore. "We're glad to be dealing with a label that loves songs." Beyond that, not much has changed. "It's rock-centric, but still experimental," Moore promises. "We're still Sonic Youth. I still don't know how to play the guitar."

The group will play three shows in Austria and Germany in late April and is also confirmed for a May 16 set as part of the No Fun Festival in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
CM8ShowAd("Middle");
In addition, Sonic Youth has teamed with Led Zeppelin's John Paul Jones and composer Takehisa Kosugi to write an evening-length work in celebration of choreographer Merce Cunningham's 90th birthday. The piece will soundtrack a performance from Cunningham's dance company on April 16 at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

I've actually been listening to a lot of Wipers and black metal lately too, so if the latter isn't complete bullshit then that would be pretty awesome. I could go for some noisy-as-fuck intense tremolo picking from the Youth.

sarramkrop 01.16.2009 03:56 PM

I have been listening to a lot of Wipers myself lately, probably too much so, so it's a sweet surprise to learn about this.

sarramkrop 01.16.2009 03:57 PM

And fucking hell SY, take some inspiration from ESG for once!

Rob Instigator 01.16.2009 04:17 PM

what about MSG?

Michael Schenker????

haha!

SYRFox 01.16.2009 04:23 PM

I really wished it was a Destiny's Child cover album...

i hope you know who i'm referring to, it wouldn't be that strange a band for them to take inspiration from.

sarramkrop 01.16.2009 04:29 PM

in fact i wouldn't be at all surprised if they were fans in some way or other.

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 01.16.2009 04:33 PM

Sonic Youth and John Paul Jones? Remember that short Murray Street doc when Byron Coley said the movie Almost Famous made Thurston sad because he and Steve Albini weren't friends anymore and Steve Albini got to record Page and Plant and Thurston's interest was piqued?

Maybe this will be their chance. Supergroup time!

Led Youth!
Sonic Zeppelin!

Song titles:
Stairway to Yr Skull
Going to Schizophrenia
Black Groove(y) Dog
Eric's Last Stand
100% Immigrant
Misty Mountain Block
Ten Years Gone In the Kingdom #19
When the Levee Makes The Nature Scene
Shadow of No Quarter
Teenage Battle of Evermore

StevOK 01.16.2009 04:59 PM

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to SpectralJulianIsNotDead again.

Rob Instigator 01.16.2009 05:46 PM

When I saw ESG at ATP UK '04, Lee was at the front of the stage snapping
some shots. They gave one of the best performances of the festival

I'm not surprised.

Rob Instigator 01.16.2009 06:05 PM

Until you brought them up I had no had ESG cross my mind in over a decade. My cousin , Newyorrican through and through, used to breakdance and shit back in the early 80's and he woudl play me the weirdest (at the time) things he bought in NYC

sarramkrop 01.16.2009 06:09 PM

Honestly Rob, do check them out. They are an incredible band.

Yeah, I agree. I meant more what aspect of them should they be inspired by. I agree that they're great just a very different band. The more I think about what you're saying though the more I see what you mean. So yes. I agree.

I think though that whatever affiliations SY have with the early 80s NY scene it seems increasingly narrow as to what areas of it they look to. Aspects of Ciccone Youth showed signs, as did elements of the Master-Dik EP but these were fleeting and never really picked up later on. I have no evidence to back this up, but while I see Thurston and Kim as being quite open to that stuff, I don't think Lee's that huge a fan. But yes, SY would be an infinitely more interesting band right now if they decided to incorporate some of that NY Disco/Funk/Punk stuff.

joe11121 01.16.2009 07:31 PM

doesn't seem very real. it might be. but i'll wait a bit to believe it.

Especially since it 90% likely won't be the title anyway, and then they can laugh at all the people who went on and on about nothing on their board.

SYRFox 01.17.2009 01:13 PM

"... oh and those track titles suck TOO!"

I love their fucking sound man. hit the record store and found a CD compilation with 3 of their songs. some old shit. I hope to find a full album.

barnaclelapse 01.19.2009 12:25 PM

I'd rather they call it "The Killer Muffin Tuna Robot Porno Hour!"

Don't lie to yourself. That's the best fucking title ever, and you fucking know it.

kingcoffee 01.20.2009 02:02 PM

No better time to see Sonic Youth than on a summer tour. I plan on going to as many shows as possible in the NE.

nobye-noaloha 01.23.2009 03:24 AM

i don't know if it is a known thing but in case....
"Artwork by Sunburned's John Moloney will be included in the packaging of Sonic Youth's upcoming release for Matador Records, watch for that in the spring sometime. Psyched!!"

stu666 01.23.2009 03:37 AM

i was just going to say that ^

barnaclelapse 01.23.2009 12:06 PM

That does indeed make it a little more awesome.
