ok just to give it a little wrap up:
Sat show at the New Musem, sold out auditorium fortunately I got in on stand-by line (I think everyone who waited got in). Highlights for me was Jim O'Rourke/Takino Makashi film, (Makashi was there and gave a little intro talk), and Robert Beatty playing to Takeshi Murata vid of geometric shapes crashing, spinning etc. Screen was huge, so sitting up front it was pretty intense. Sat night: SY set you already know about. Pedestrian Deposit for me best set of the night, maybe of the whole weekend. Amazing intensity and really creative. I'd compare it to Raionbashi and Kutzkalina set 2 years ago. Anyway they were amazing, you should check them out. Sun: Black Pus was the highlight, got the biggest response of the night (some pit action but not too much). like someone said, between gods and men there is Brian Chippendale... that's about it, can't say anything really bad about anybody it was a good weekend. btw- met Jen from the board on sunday, I was right by her on Sat, realized it from reading her post about that photographer who pushed her. ps- Im pretty sure vids from SY set will surface soon, if they havent already... |
Black Pus killed it. That guy is an endless well of awesome beats. And sick guitar riffs. Did anyone hear what he said about his "friend that comes over to jam every night, but now he just goes to bed" or some shit? Don't know if he was referencing Lightning Bolt or not. Don't quote me. There was lots of noise.
Emeralds was really cool too; a nice, concise set that had higher energy than their records. The rest of the night was pretty lame. |
|
Did anyone see Skullflower?
|
Wow no one deserves this shit.
|
Skullflower, hum... yeah I'm not sure if that was Skullflower who closed. The last band was C. Spencer Yeh on violin, two guitar players whom I didn't recognize, and a girl on cello. I think they might have been members of Sunburned, but I'm not sure. They played this one long drone-y note for about 40 minutes, under harsh purple lights...
Also yeah that's terrible what happened with stolen gear. |
it was matthew bower, he was the bald dude, and spencer c yeh was just guesting. sunday night was fucking PHENOMENAL. so glad the bouncers let me back in. chppendale was what i expected, awesome. blown away by emeralds set. drumm/prurient so loud, etc...
doesn't dom fernow look different? i was talking to him at the hospital stand for like an hr sat and sun and didnt even realize it was him till he played. |
cold cave are a better live band than you'd expect as well.
|
but skullflower generally is just bower doing his eavy rocking thing, the other members are in flux. yeh fit in perfect with the sound though, they put off a theatere of eternal music vibe. conrad schnitzlier was ok too untill they let him play for a half an hr too long.
|
matthew bower was not the bald dude.
|
|
The double whammy of Sonic Youth and Bardo Pond was killer. Overall tho the fest was a bit of a letdown.. Would've like to have attended in the hay day back in like '04/'05
Sons of God was very cool.. Skullflower was pretty cool. Bower was the dude in the blue long sleeved t-shirt FYI |
prurient/drumm was sick as well
|
ok here is the scoop as confirmed by C. Spencer Yeh: Skullflower was Matthew Bower, Samantha Davies, and Lee "Culver" Stokoe. Spencer was sitting in at Matthew's request.
|
yeah i knew it was skullflower, just couldt figure out who bower was (the most clear pics ive seen of him were promos for 3rd gatekeeper when it came out)
i think bower and yeh should start a band full time, they sound like theyre made to play together. they are both shattering the boundaries between noise, drone, psych, rock, and free improvisation. |
i talked to spencer after the show though, he is the nicest fuckin dude.
|
bower and the culver fella play a lot together. i remember trying to explain what chavs are to a member of the nihlist spasm band with him a few years ago in leeds. interesting night that.

thats horrible. the reviews from this years no fun fest seem to reflect 'no fun'. not as fun as prior years anyway. |
Any streams, mp3 or torrents of the SY set?
|
Not that I have yet found, but Emeralds were also great and here is proof.

No Fun Fest is coming to Europe.
18-20th September in Fylkingen, Stockholm. |
Sounds cool, but somehow I doubt I'll be able to make it.
|
|
I was telling Steve that they definitely need to release this shit in some capacity, maybe SYR or NFP. He said they hadn't really thought about what they were going to do with it yet.

I really really REALLY wish they'd come and play at Nightmare Before Christmas in December. Thanks for the great footage. |
i didn't end up going but from the video on facebook, sonic youth kicked ass. i would of done anything to see Emeralds' set. i'm starting to love their music

Looks alright, but not good enough to take a plane to Sweden. |
ok reposting e-mail from Carlos Giffoni (off his mailing list):
Thanks to everyone that made it this year to the fest, it was a blast and couldn't have gone better. We will be updating the site int he following week with all the great press the fest this year been receiving so far as well as pictures, and other surprises. in the meantime if you want to relive some memories or take a look at what you missed, here are some great pictures from Michael Muniak: http://www.muniak.com/nofunfest2009/ |
btw- I talked to Carlos at IPR last Saturday and asked him about this Sweden thing and he said the venue is pretty small so it will likely sell out fast so if you're coming from other countries might make sense to plan early.
Although now I'm not sure if just the party venue is small and regular fest is larger capacity... |

no fucking shit, i could hardly guess who was going to be there. |

You could have quoted many more unsurprising names from the lineup. :) But yeah, it's fairly predictable... to me, so far it lacks any special names who are really worth travelling for, unlike what the NYC editions always seem to have. The European names I've pretty much all seen before, and most of the American ones tour Europe pretty often. I've yet to see Prurient and Emeralds, but I'm fairly sure they'll make it to Holland sometime in the future. There's a more interesting festival much closer to home that same weekend that I'll be going to. |
