off the top off my head.. I can't think of any bands i like that started out terrible and got better. i can think of many bands i like who started out good/great and became shit though.

I think Radiohead started out awful, got decent, and then got pretty bad again (In Rainbows).

I don't think Beefheart started out "awful" but Safe as Milk was a bit unremarkable compared to the masterpieces he would make afterwards.

I got an obvious one: DAUGHTERS

Stony Sleep's first album's not that much cop. The second one's great. I'm sure someone's said Blur already. Did anyone mention Can? Or is it just me that can't stand Mooney-era?

They'd probably have to be the band with the biggest increase.

Pablo Honey, while not great, is better than either of their last two albums. And it comes out better live - look up bootlegs from the early days.
