just a little bump to point out the good acting in the last couple episodes of Dollhouse.
Bennet + Topher scenes + Victor/Topher = amazing. Great dialogues and funny references. "What's she like?" "Uh, totally shy, librarian energy through the roof..." "Glasses?" "Glasses on a chaiiiin!" "FOR THE WIN!!" "Dude, she has a DEAD ARM." "Like, dead? Like, in a sling, with the glove?" "Imagine John Cassavetes in The Fury as a hot chick." "Which you know I often have!" Pure brilliance. And she is a hot chick. |
To say Joss Whedon was bitter over the cancellation of "Firefly" would be an understatement. I believe Summer Glau has now been cast in two drama series that have been cancelled by Fox. The other one being "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles".
|
the 2 most recent episodes of dollhouse were fucking brilliant-- brilliant!
looking forward to the next one, hell the fuck yes! of course the turds at fox cancelled it so this is it-- oh, the fucking fuckwads-- always doing this shit. |
I just recently started plowing through episodes of Buffy on Netflix. Season 1 has been spectacular so far. I even scooped up a few comics, just for the fun of it... although I know many of them take place during Season 8. I'll get there eventually though.
Anywho great show, great concept, and great characters. I remember seeing the '92 film on VHS when I was about 4 or 5. I'd only caught a few episodes here and there, growing up, so it'll be nice being able to watch the entire series from start to finish. I haven't seen Firefly, but I did manage to catch Serenity a while back. I remember thinking it was pretty alright... but I can't recall all that much. I'm a Cowboy Bebop fan, so I definitely appreciated the atmosphere. But yeah, Joss definitely has some major talent. Oh and Sarah Michelle Gellar is a fucking fox! |
One thing I really appreciate about this show, is that it seems as if no one is safe. I'm only on Season 2, but I've already been shocked by just who the show has already chosen as expendable enough to bump off. No matter how essential a character may seem, there is an actual risk that they might die. I really like that.
Also, lots of cool music throughout the series so far. Especially the Buffy theme song! Those drums are fucking sick! Also the screams, and the howls... gah, I love this show! Honestly, I was just looking for an excuse to keep this thread bumped. |
yeeeeeh!
Buffy rules. There are a few weak episodes (like the woman-mantis one in the first season...damn that sucked!) but it's mostly superfun and the story goes on nicely, with humor poppin up even when things get serious. Some episodes are unforgettable (hush, once more with feeling, etc), you'll sure enjoy them also coz season 1 is one of the "weakest", on many levels...I think season 4 is my least favourite, except for some episodes, like the already mentioned "Hush"...as a general rule, when in the opening credits you read "written and directed by joss whedon", well, you're in for something reeeeeeeeeally good.... About the comics, season 8 started a while ago as proprer sequel to the tv series, but most of the comics available (I mean, older stuff) is not "properly" part of season 8. |
Really, Season 1, one of the worst? Well, damn... I'm in for a treat. :D
I have issues #1, #3 and #4 of the 8th season, and then the first issue of the standard series. I've heard the issues that aren't part of season 8 take place in between certain episodes... but I'm not nearly far enough in the series to start worrying about that yet. |
Buffy season 1 is a lot like The X-Files season 1. Trying to figure itself, a lot of the stand alone/monster of the week stuff is silly, but by season 2, the show really gets good. If you have managed to go this many years without any of the major spoilers you are certainly not wrong when you say nobody is safe. Whedon is notorious for putting his characters through hell (sometimes literally). Also I highly reccomend "Angel".
|
The episodes directed by Whedon always use such neat lighting techniques. There's something surreal about them, which really reminds you just how keenly bizarre the premise behind the show is. It's so pulpy, I can't get enough.
Wow... that episode, "Ted" (S2E11), with John Ritter?! ![]() Not directed by Joss, but damn... I really miss John Ritter. He had such incredible talent. He can switch from comedic to frightening with the snap of a finger. His facial gestures, later in the episode, actually appeared inhuman. R.I.P Did you guys know that last Thursday, March 10th, actually marked the 14th year anniversary of the show's debut? I just read it on an official Facebook post, and thought it was pretty rad. |

Does the Angel timeline interact with the Buffy timeline, and if so, at what point in the Buffy series should I start watching the Angel series? Plz no spoilers. :) |
Here is the thing. "Angel" started its first season when "Buffy" was going into its fourth season. During the first and maybe second season there were some cross-over episodes. This was back when both shows were still on the WB. But after "Buffy"'s fifth season, the show went to UPN for the last two seasons, And "Angel" stayed on the WB, which pretty much killed any cross-over episodes. While certainly there are episodes, especially on the last season of "Angel" that refference things that happened on "Buffy" they didn't really crossover anymore.

Thanks!

You're welcome, keep us developed on your watching progress. I happen to think that oddly the third season is the best for each series.
|
So i just finished the XMAS episode of season 3 last night and an alarming question occurred to me from a previous episode. I understand why there is a 2nd slayer... but if there are only 2... how could there possibly be a watcher's retreat? A bunch of ex-watchers?? That doesn't make much sense... and that would make Giles too important to not be invited, seeing as he is the watcher of the only slayers in existence.
Either I've recognized a fatal continuity error, or I have missed something entirely. |

Another thing is that since Faith was "activated" as The Slayer, where was she originally? Since I suppose Sunnydale is techincally set in California (west coast) and Eliza is and we can assume Faith is from the east coast (Boston) was she also near a Hellmouth? You'd think the most current slayer would be slaying in hot spots with the worst demonic energy.
|
According to http://buffy.wikia.com/ Faith is from Boston as well. As far as the multiple Hellmouths go, I have no clue. I also wonder the same thing about Kendra, and her hometown in Jamaica.
Shit runs deep, bro. |
This might be sorta interesting to readers of this thread...

She was also on Dollhouse for a couple episodes, right? That would technically make her count 3. Actually, I have a theory. If you want to make a sci-fi/superheroish genre tv show improve 10 fold, cast Summer Glau. Just be warned though, she is the kiss of death. The 4400, Firefly, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Dollhouse, The Cape.... I can't believe that no one has mentioned the fact that Whedon is directing The Avengers movie! I don't think the movie can even be anything less than amazing, between Whedon, and the cast members from the Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America movies. And one last thing, for those that do know what a Browncoat is: watch Firefly. Twice. Then watch Serenity. Three times. Then watch Firefly again. Then read the Serenity comic books: "Better Days," and"Those Left Behind." Then watch Serenity again. Then read "A Shepard's Tale." Repeat. Best incarnation of science fiction i've seen on camera since star wars. |
Just watched all 3 acts of Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog.
It was.... decent. But I think I'll be sticking with the Buffy. :D |
If Whedon gets to have relative creative freedom to the The Avengers where he wants to I think it'll be amazing. The only time things turn out crappy for Whedon is when he doesn't get creative control of his work. Even if its bad it will probobly still be far better then the Fantasic Four and X-Men movies combined.

wait man, X2 kicked fucking ass! that skews the average completely. i think dollhouse improved because of the boundaries placed upon him though-- it was kinda slow at first. @cars: summer glau is fuckin AWESOME! maybe too good for the masses but she's fucking great. only reason i watched sarah connor chronicles was her. well ok the mom was kinda hot too. |
Took a brief Buffy break after season 3. What a season that was. Great finale, and the prom episode had me feeling as if I had breasts, and a lust for dark chocolates. That was so sweet how they made Buffy that award for being class protector, and then Angel showing up; my sockets swelled.
Watched a few episodes of Angel. That was pretty cool too. I like how Angel is somewhat of a Batman-like figure. That's cool. Season 4 of Buffy is, of course, a big change from previous seasons, given it being the college years, and all. I appreciate that Whedon was able to smoothly adjust the show's premise post-high school. It seems like he's having a lot of fun with the writing this season, and why shouldn't he? The show's now presented in Widescreen! |
Buffy Ssn 5
*spoilers ahead* Funny how Buffy has a sister now, I'm not too far in this one yet (my gf now insists I watch it with her, which definitely hinders my progress). I'm sure there's gonna be some really clever explanation for this. Hmmmm... NO SPOILERS PLZ Anyhow, I also started watching Dollhouse. Pretty neat. Still collecting Whedon comics too, when I'm finally able to start reading 'em all, I'll have a treasure chest for sure. :D |

It's kinda mixed, some episodes are "eeeh, kinda good", but others, daaaamn, are stellar, thanks to some dialogues and the actors' (I won't say the names, but you'll get who I mean later in the season/s) performances. no spoilers. what do you think of Buffy S4 overall? |
I liked it a lot, but it was a bit more hit and miss than prior seasons. When it worked though, it really worked. It seems like Joss was having a lot of fun taking risks with the writing. Just playing around with the format, and seeing what he could get away with. Like the "silent" episode, BUFFY WANT BEER!, Giles singing all the time, or the trippy dream episode finale.
The episodes with Oz and the female Werewolf were great. That was really cool. I'm a big fan of werewolves. Willow's hinted lesbianism became reality, which was cleverly done... but could her new lover be any blander? I guess that's the intention though, I don't think she even has a title credit. Demon Giles was funny. Spike and Xander had some of their best one-liners. The humor was in full force. The Initiative story was interesting, but I think Adam was a pretty lame villain. Riley is also less interesting than Angel, of course. The first three seasons were amazing though. Season 4 was almost on par, but not quite. I'm definitely becoming a Whedon fanatic! |
Whedon always tends to introduce characters and always seems like they weren't meant to last very long, but then end up becoming major characters. Spike was never meant to be a major character on the show, but he grew and developed. Same with Faith, she was only supposed to last a few episodes, but her character grew as the series grew. So yes, many characters when they start out seem rather expendable, but over time they develop and become more interesting. As for the sister, that was how Whedon wanted to introduce her, to the viewer she just appeared out of thin air but to the characters it was like she was always there. Good explaination or not it will make some kind of sense as season 5 goes on.
|
I guess I'll just have to wait and see how it pans out.
|
*possible spoilers for Buffy fans*
Ok, so I'm decently well into the 6th season of Buffy now. Somewhere after the musical episode, Once More with Feeling (which I unexpectedly loved), Giles has left for the 2nd time (buzz kill), Willow is becoming overpowered by magic after losing her gf, and Spike and undead Buffy are slamming eachother into walls and shit, making out, and riding Spike's vampiric cock while standing (pretty edgy for Network tv eh?). Season 5 was an odd one. I did like the whole Dawn subplot with Glory and all, but that didn't really kick in properly 'till halfway through the season. The first chunk of episodes were actually pretty uneventful. But I've gotta say I'm still eagerly awaiting the next episode, and there's only one televised season left to go after the one I'm on - which is more than I could say about the later seasons of my beloved X-Files. My big question now - Now that Buffy has died again (at the end of ssn 5), just where is the new Slayer? Is there not a new one because of Faith? Will I find out soon enough? NO SPOILERRS PLZ (as usual) |
Pretty much how it works. Faith is THE active slayer. They kind of explain it when Faith first arrives back in season 3, but then don't get too much into it. I think if I'm not mistaken though in the last season they do talk about how the fact that there are now two living slayers it has caused a kind of chaos. I won't get too into that, I'm not even sure I can recall exactly how its explained.
|
Can't stand anything he's done except for Firefly, which was entirely based on the Traveller RPG with just a little Star Wars thrown in, so what's not to love, but the horrible junk science (all the planets in one solar system with sunny desert like conditions in the "outer planets" OMG that's stoopid!)
|
He's brilliant.
|
Woah. How'd I miss a fucking Joss Whedon thread? I'm watching Firefly right now actually. I'm a huge fanboy.
Dollhouse and Firefly are probably tied for my favorite television series. His writing just keeps getting better with each series. His characters, like River, Echo, and Alpha, are phenomenal. Just incredible writing. I'm not the biggest Buffy fan, though. |
Just started Buffy season 7 the other night, and call me crazy - but I almost feel as if this might be the best season since the third. Maybe not, but it's starting off really strong.
*once again no spoilerz plz* |
Actually finished Buffy not too long ago. Now I'm reading Season 8, so far I only have issues 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 16.
I got so interested in collecting the pre-Season 8 comics, and the Fray mini-series that I completely forgot just how close I was to finishing the series. My favorite seasons in order (off the top of my head)... 3, 2, 1, 7, 5, 4, 6 Definitely the best show I've ever seen. I've never seen a show with such a bizarre (and macabre) concept, so much pop-icon glisten, that delivered so boldly in Action, Horror, Comedy, and even Romance. Sooooo many memorable moments, and characters - I've never wanted to live in a fictional universe so badly in my life. Watching Firefly, and Angel now. Rock on Joss. ![]() |
His long completed horror film he co-wrote with fellow "Angel" writer Drew Goddard "Cabin in the Woods" just finally got a release date of April 13, 2012. Apparently its coming out just a mere three weeks before "The Avengers" is coming out. Frankly, I think I'm more excited for "Cabin in the Woods".
|
I'd never thought you'd rank S01 that high!
|
Quote:
I'm definitely more pumped for Cabin in the Woods. I've been reading up on it, nice to know there's actually a release date now. Quote:
The first thing that I fell in love with about the show was the initial concept of a high school sweetheart hunting, and killing vampires; and season 1 represents that in its rawest form. It reminds me of the X-Files season 1 in how it's more episodical than the later seasons, and doesn't take itself too seriously. Honestly, I'm surprised at how much I enjoyed Season 7. I totally didn't see that coming. |
Quote:
YES i am an enemy of ratings but your ranking is a good one. in season 7 nathan fillion was awesome-- his performance carried a lot of the show when other areas were lacking. season 4 sucked and riley was a cardboard square jawed suck, 6 it wasn't cool to see buffy degrade herself like that hm no sorry. but season 6 resurrected & despondent is still better than that college frankenstein lab & all those shit episodes and the dude sucked. alright bye. ------ ps dawn sucks hairy kiwis, why didn't glory kill her why why why? |
