Yeah, I guess it depends on what kind of person your mom is. Mine’s an academic, like I said, and in the humanities no less, so she watches shit like Bill Maher and John Oliver, and watches documentaries about popular culture. She mentioned “Blood on the Leaves” to me, actually. Asked how I could reconcile the distasteful use of the sample of a song that used to make Billie Holliday literally vomit when she had to sing it with my love for Kanye.

But my mom is also *my* mom, and I don’t know if you all have noticed, but I can be kind of a bulldozer when it comes to talking about stuff I like. My mom had to learn about Nirvana, Radiohead, etc. and kept up with pop culture when I left.

But yeah, ask your mom. I’d be interested to know.

She said she doesn't know much about Tentacion's personal life. Honestly, maybe her taste in music is just bad nowadays, she praised Kid Cudi's awful attempt at grunge music too.. though it kind of seems like her thing to be a contrarian and counter culture..

Rob Instigator 01.25.2018 08:48 AM

Jesus would have said everything that Badu said about Hitler.

Haha, of course Bruno won album of the year Grammy.

noisereductions 01.29.2018 08:12 AM

I'm a broken record here, but -who cares about the Grammy's?- I mean, Bruno Mars winning Grammy's... doesn't surprise me or anything. I kind of assume that the sort of people who care about the Grammy's in general are probably big Bruno Mars fans.

I saw Ghost's Brown Tape reviewed on pfork which struck me odd. About midway thru they reference that this is a reissue of a limited cassette tape. No idea what they're talking about as I bought this album on CD in 2013 from a major retailer. Shrug.

noisereductions 01.29.2018 08:18 AM

I just looked at a list of Grammy winners...

What is the difference between album and record of the year?

And how was Chappelles Netflix special considered a comedy album?

Album is an album.
Record is a record. It’s old-timey language for “song that was commercially released as a single,” even though singles are very different beasts now.

Album = Album
Record = Single
Song = Award for songwriting for a song... I think it has to still be commercially released as a single, but those days a video counts I guess.

The Grammys occasionally nail a moment, but they almost never do so in the main categories. Album, record, song of the year. The irritating thing is that they try to give the appearance of choosing based on merit, but then they end up giving to the most friendly and familiar thing in these categories.

I’m goddamn glad DAMN. didn’t win. That album has no business being “Album of the year.” It’s too goddamn good, and the year was too goddamn shitty.

noisereductions 01.29.2018 11:39 AM

oh. A single. They should just call it that. But whatever. Grammy's still suck.

And I still don't get why a Netflix show would count as "an album". OH well.

Because almost all Netflix shows have accompanying playlists or digital soundtracks at this point. I’ll bet Chappelle’s is available in audio-only on iTunes or something.

But yeah, that is weird. I just assume that they’re up in the air about what the fuck constitutes all these terms in the age of overlapping pan-media, and they’re just playing it by ear.

Fucking Grammys are only cool when they make a legit good choice. I like the fact that Kanye has 21 of them, but if he didn’t, I’d think they were even more insane than they are.

We’re talking about the institution that gave Eric Clapton’s unplugged album AOTY over fucking NEVERMIND. The fuck? Fucking what? Whaaaaaat?

Not even a fucking album... not even a good LIVE album, beats the most important pop culture statement of the last 30 years. The fucking fuck?

It’s like the Oscars’ less civilized cousin. And, like the Oscars, I like them when it serves me to like them. Hate them when it doesn’t. When it gives me argument fodder for morons who don’t think The Dark Knight is a great film, I’m on board. When Blade Runner 2049 is snubbed, I’m spitting flames.

But I’m glad DAMN. didn’t win. It would take something away from it, I think. I do think Jay Z or even Lorie would have been a better choice than Bruno goddamn Mars though.

Severian 01.29.2018 05:50 PM

Kendrick is now where Kanye was in ‘08. Three huge albums, all nominated for AOTY, all snubbed. Just sayin’.

noisereductions 01.29.2018 06:17 PM

Maybe that Chappelle is on iTunes. I don't know. It's not on Spotify.

Justin Timberlake smear campaign.. scapegoating or justified (see what I did there.. hehe)?

louder 02.04.2018 06:43 PM

Seriously, I think that the publications and social media have been a little too hard on him.

The new album is a miss sure, but not as bad as they say it is.

Janet Jackson incident, Prince beef, the tweet that gave "all lives matter" connotations, working with Woody Allen.. all distasteful decisions, and he does come off as an opportunist at times.. but still.

I don’t know man. I really don’t know about some of the things you’re taking about because I don’t pay attention to Justin Timberlake, but I’ll Tell you what, middle America loves him. He’s reached that level of celebrity where his whiteness and familiarity make him seem wholesome, and been around long enough to no longer be offensive to *anyone,* which is something no artist should aim to be.

Moms love him.

I think he’s a wanker and a taint, but he’s not, like, Drake-level offensive to me. I do think he’s taking it on the chin pretty hard from the media, but I don’t think he cares. He should stick to acting though. Best thing he’s ever done imo has been Napster guy in The Social Network.

His new album really is the epitome of mom music.. Pharrell can be a great producer when he's willing to take risks, but when he's stuck in his comfort zone, his beats just sound like they are essentially meant to be played in pink smart cars.

evollove 02.06.2018 08:00 AM

Oh! I didn't know. Saw Pharell's name on enough stuff I liked so I got a solo CD from library and I'm like "What is this shit?"

What CD was t? Was it “Girl?” Because oh my goodness that was some vanilla weak sauce.

evollove 02.06.2018 08:20 AM

Yeah. From the artwork to the music, I just felt it wasn't for me at all. Best way to put it.

I think “weaksauce” is as good a way to put it as any.

No need for that preppy Disney, Mickey Mouse Club version of “808s & Heartbreak” to even exist if you ask me.

louder 02.09.2018 04:10 AM

Soo.. Sev, what do you think about the Black Panther album??

louder 02.09.2018 05:29 AM

Oh man. This shit is TOUGH.

Probably the best rap album of the year again unless Kanye drops.

Haven’t heard it. Not really interested. Like I said, not an actual Kendrick album, so it’s about as significant for me as his guest verse on Bad Blood.

If you recommend it, I’ll check it out. But I’m not feeling particularly inspired by the snippets I’ve heard so far.

I remember you said the exact same thing when Blacker the Berry dropped. At the time you were totally enthused by it.

Huh? Really? I loved TBTB, and I got the day it came out.

Listened to a bit of Black Panther today. Not a Kendrick album, but not bad by any means.

h8kurdt 02.10.2018 12:12 PM

Nah, I was talking about the single. I went a looked back at that period before it's release and it was i you weren't keen on at all. Then Blacker The Berry came out and then you got hyped.

Feels weird to look back and red at that period. Both Kanye and Kendrick (...and Drake) were getting albums out and the anticipation was crazy for them. Except Suchfriends, bless him. I actually feel like I'll never get as hyped for new albums by anyone now. Even DAMN last year was met with "Ah, ok, cool. I'll check that out at some point". I dunno, I need to get my music mojo back.

Yeah, but the Kanye album didn’t come out until almost a year later. For me, 2015 was actually a REALLY boring year. Aside from TPAB, which took some time to grow on me, there was mostly just a shit ton of good-not-great albums, and a few top-notch ones from artists I like but don’t generally get me ultra pumped.

But I feel you. I think 2013 was an extremely epic year, then in 2014 there were several albums by solid bands that made an impact (and there was the return of Aphex Twin too!), and then in 2016 we had Kanye (finally), Bowie, Frank Ocean, and a bunch of other solid albums.

There are only a few artists that truly get me pumped anymore. I’m listening to less and less new music, but still getting a lot of joy from my favorites.

h8kurdt 02.10.2018 12:52 PM

13 was just mental. *goes to Wiki to remember*

Asap Rocky
Tyler The Creator
Ghostface Killah with that frankly brilliant album Twelve Reasons To Dies
Chance The Rapper
Talib Kweli
J. Cole (boy did he fuck up releasing Born Sinner the same day as Yeezus)
Kanye
First Freddie Gibbs album
Jay-Z
ASAP Ferg
Earl Sweatshirt
Drake
Pusha T
M.I.A

All released an album in 2013, and pretty much all of those were solid gold. Crazy year.
