They both look rather aged in that particular photo.
The picture is from this year.

P.S. Sonic Youth aren't exactly spring chickens either.

haha atari i love your signature.

"what's that smell?"
"it smells like otto's jacket!"

Tenacious D. A little too obvious, but I was high last night watching their show, so I just had to put it up here. And some old Cheech and Chong, like Up In Smoke or Ear Ache My Eye. Good shit. Makes me smile. Especially when Im stoned.

Meh. Call me a scenester but I don't find 'silly' music that appealing. Sure, there are some decent bands but nothing I'm ever too excited about. Maybe AOR but they were serious about being disgusting and dirty. Not really 'silly'.

There are bands/artists who certainly could be funny,

Dead Kennedys
Black Flag (TV Party/Six Pack)
Eugene Chadbourne
Circle Jerks
Peter & The Test Tube Babies (ok - maybe not them)

spring to mind.

Glice 09.16.2006 05:48 AM

Chadbourne annoys me when he's being funny. I do like him otherwise though.
Louden Wainwright III spring to mind suddenly. Any love for the elder Wainwright?

I think Hayden has got the idea perfectly. I'm not interested in silly, I'm interested in goodfunny but not wackyhilariouszany.

Vømmøl Spellmanslag can be hilarious at times. Hans Rotmo has a great sense of humor.

Amusing lyrics on this record. I mean, "gonna kill you in the face", how more "fuck-off" can you really get?

Jonathan Richman is really funny, and you certainly lose all aggressivity when listening to him.
I saw him on tour once, and he is a treat. He sometimes got rid of the guitar to just dance (it ain't Beyoncé dancing, it's just somebody who could be you). He also interpreted a little scene in English, French & Italian.
I Was Dancing in the Lesbian Bar is my favorite JR song; nice lyrics - his lyrics really are something.
Monologue About Bermuda displays his sense of humour, freely making fun of himself.
A few song titles from Rock'n'Roll with the Modern Lovers (what a cover !) :
Ice Cream Man
The Wheels on the Bus
Coomyah
Rockin' Rockin' Leprechauns
Egyptian Reggae

Is it any good?

Bertrand 09.16.2006 01:31 PM

There's a video of Richman singing I Was Dancing there :

And Egyptian Reggae (the JR instrumental, I find it really good)

Its interesting at the very least. It has a certain Middle Eastern vibe to it as well, if I had some of it to share with you all I would.

Thanks Bertand.

My pleasure
