Pouncey, never really liked his writing found it to be kind of someone writing without really having the extensive frame of reference that his subject matter needs, cf that piece in the Wire a few years ago about "Subterranean Metal", plus lacking in any kind of charisma, which ties in with what glice says.
Pretty much I think that if you can't write as well as and don't have the encyclopaedic knowledge of Byron Coley, Joe Carducci, or Tom Lax then you shouldn't bother writing about rock music.

Just to pick up on this - Coley is a great writer, but I think his virtue is in the self-contained logic of his ridiculous adjectives. He's clearly very knowledgeable, but then I reckon Pencil/ Pouncey is pretty up there. The problem with Pouncey - and Wire writers in general - is that there's this sense that namechecking is somehow a critical analysis. There are some very nuanced writers there - I really like Brian Morley - but a lot of them (as the letter at the beginning of this thread alludes to) write in this cod-academic style that's not massively helpful. If anyone knows of any mags that do look at a similar field to the Wire in a properly academic way, I'd be grateful to know. I pick up the odd jazz or classical mag, but the subject matter gets quite tiring for me.

Edwin Pouncy used to be fine when writing for Forced Exposure but his style really suffered when he went to the Wire. And as seems to be the view of most who've met him, not a particularly likeable man.

I have very little formal knowledge in terms of music, have never read The Wire, and realize that this thread is older than gmku's balls; so this letter could not possibly be of any less interest to me.

But, I just wanna say that both GD, and NR seem like pretty cool guys - especially when considering the rest of the human population. Not one member on here is nearly as big of a twat, as most of the imbeciles I know in real life. It's a shame that cheap jollies are so easily absorbed from pointless, online bickering.
