if/when i have kids (and i have always said this) i will always be honest with them about drugs and my drug use (which is pretty much limited to weed these days) because i think it's worse if you lie to them or try and hide it from them and there's a good chance that they'll resent you for it later. i wouldn't smoke pot around them though, wait till they go to bed or while they're at school or whatever.

i admit even though society considers me an adult i'm still immature in some ways, but with age comes wisdom.

My parents (after MUCH cajoling from moi) told me about their experiences (inc. Dad Melly's coke days in the 70's) - I had a lot more respect for their concern for me after that. Cantanky's spot on - being honest and open w/yer kids on this matter is really the only policy - the "war" on drugs is bullshit all the way.

my grandmother and grandfather never hid it from their kids (they grew it in their greenhouse), incl. my mom, and the kids grew up not even batting an eye at it, just thinking it was something adults did like drinking beer or smoking cigarettes. and my mom was that way with me and i think it's a good way to be. it's nothing to be ashamed of, however you do have to tell your kids that they shouldn't tell just anyone about it.

Cantanky - with weed etc, that's totally spot on. I have in my time met parents who were basically heroin addicts and didn't hide it from their children - this is my own personal feeling, but I had (and still have) a massive problem with that...please don't think I'm comapring that to your experience - I'm not, and they ARE totally different things. I just remember the horror and sadness I felt for both the parents and kids in that situation...

You know sometimes it really helps when parents know nothing about drugs. For example a friends recent experience.

"So have you taken LSD then son?"

"Yeah, I'm afraid I have done that before"

"Ah alright, just whatever you do don't move on to weed"

Derek 08.15.2008 04:22 PM

If I ever did drugs of any kind, my parents would figure it out straight away. If I ever chose to do drugs, then I'd at least wait until I'm out of the house (which will be in a few years if I get into uni).

My dad has smoked pot since the beginning of time and I don't think it's really made that big of a difference in my life.

Crumb's Crunchy Delights 08.15.2008 04:24 PM

with full blown drug addiction...if i had a kid at the time i would never have let them see that (well obviously the kid would see me but you know what i mean...i wouldn't whip out a line in front of them), but i would tell them when they were older but i don't really think you can learn from other people's mistakes, although i would do my best to try and keep them from making the same mistakes i've made because no one wants to see that happen to their children, but i would be supportive and understanding should they ever find themselves in a similar position, because i think that's the only thing you can really do.

terriblecanyons 08.15.2008 07:02 PM

My biological mom was cracked out on cocaine when she was pregnant with me, and my dad did various drugs and alcohol when I was very young, so naturally I'm not too forgiving about such things. However, I believe that if you're honest about it with your children and don't put their lives in danger, it's acceptable.
