-the concept of childhood is a fairly new one, dating back probably to rousseau
-in old times, you started working as soon as you could walk. there were no saturday morning cartoons.
-women got pregnant as soon as it was possible.
-ask yourself-- was marrying pubescent girls a common practice in that place at that time? or was he doing this on his own?
-think of other milennia-old practices like the jewish one of declaring a boy to be a man at 13. sure does that not apply today, does it? even though it's still done in a religious context, 13 year olds aren't ready to leave the nest. a full course of education takes something like 20 years these days.

hitler & cronies set up a state run church (the reich church) but it didn't get very far popularity wise.
german, nazi christians tried to restructure the whole of christianity into a racially pure, new brand. they wanted to clear the church teachings of all the ungerman elements, particually the influence from the vatican.
it is complicated though because you can't just declare war on the catholic church. it's unconcievable.
