It's Jane From Occupied Europe, Swell Maps' second album. Essential! The Secretly Canadian edition is the one to have, I say (the CD includes two bonus tracks; great booklet, too).

Incidentally, I'm not sure if it was this one or A Trip To Marineville, but Swell Maps got me some shit from the neighbors. I don't think it was louder than usual... those mooks just couldn't take the music itself, regardless of volume. MOOKS!

Sorry you live near such a bunch of feeble minded twats. Next time they give you shit remind them that without Swell Maps, the blueprint for '80s/'90s lo-fi basement rock from REM to Pavement and GBV, would never have been drawn.

I'm not sure what you should say when they stare blankly at you because they were either born in 1994 or don't rightly know what you're talking about.... Maybe you should just put a burning poo-bag on at their door, ring the bell and run like hell.

Swell Maps were one of the archetypal frenzied college post-punk/noisey-pop groups. Similar, I suppose, to the Fall and Wire, with traces of Young Marble Giants' quirky snark and Fire Engines' pleasant squall.

They were sonically chaotic and experimental, and in that sense they influenced Sonic Youth... but there was a quintessential Britishness to them that I feel is reflected in Bob Pollard's half-affected "accent" and appreciation for 60's pop.

If you like Pere Ubu, Televsion Personalities, crass, Yellow Pills, Au Paris, Half Japanese, blah blah blah the you really need to get your hands on Jane From Occupied Europe.

Frankly it's one of the best albums ever made. I'll bet most people here who've heard it would agree. It's an absolute necessity.

Sorry if that was a rushed and shitty description. :)

I've been familiar with, Swell Maps since since the mid 80's......my first introduction to them was from their appearance of the Various Artist comp, 'Tyranny And The Beat.'
