parents suck
sonic youth rulez duh jose |
I feel really bad posting anything about this, but I do not post much and it was a coincidence that i even saw anything about this tonight!
I just would say, anything is possible! The down tone of the spin article is not echoed in the matador statement itself, and not echoed in the very recent New York City concert which did not to very intuitive sonic lifers (Jenn and others) suggest anything like there was this turmoil and imbalance about Thurston or Kim! Love is a many splendored thing, marriage is not, necessarily! I do not feel like, even if Sonic Youth dematerializes now, it would be in a way that was unloving to music and art. : ) Their perspectives on life are not traditional, and their love of the truth found in music and art is not going to disappear even if Sonic Youth, itself very close to the exact pulse of modern music and art, would dissolve. |

i don't know what to say...

I'm ashamed to admit that the first thing that crossed my mind upon seeing this article, without having any time to think, is whether this means the end of Sonic Youth. But as sad as that would be, more importantly, I wish the best for both of them and Coco. Divorce can be an extremely painful thing, and I wouldn't wish it on anyone.
As for those of you making a joke of this matter, I'm sure you think it's harmless, but please consider the concept that there's a time and place for everything. |
I'm not really sure how to feel about this, and I suspect being that the details (none of which are my business) will likely never surface that I'll always feel that way. All I know is that it's obviously serious. Kim and Thurston have always done an amazing job keeping their private/relationship life out of media spotlight sans when things were BIG (Coco being born, etc). Them taking the effort to even announce the split is enough for me to know it's serious. I like to think it's temporary and things will be worked out, but yeah...kind of doubt it. We shall see. Hopefully this doesn't mark the end for the band, but at the same time seeing them on stage together and knowing they are no longer a unit might feel a bit strange. I always thought their relationship situation was about as good as anyone could ever be fortunate enough to find themselves in. 27 years, insane. All those great tunes. This shit is a bummer.

Sonic youth are parents. Did I just blow yr mind? |
I just feel bad for their daughter, since her parents break up will be so public and will probably follow her for the rest of her life.
besides that, I don't really care. Sonic youth have put out enough records for me to enjoy and I don't mind if they never release another record again. And I'm sure kim and thurston lost the spark a long time ago, don't do business, or at least long term business with yr lover. |
This is me opening the Spin Article :
![]() Unbelievable. |
I hope they are able to work everything out. It's really a huge shocker on one hand, but yet in the other you're kind of surprised after all that touring for so long it hadn't happened sooner.
I think they'll still do something. Mac and Laura broke up in Superchunk in 1993 and the band is still together today, touring and releasing new music. It's sporadic, yes, but I'd rather see minimal SY activity as opposed to none at all. ~Jeremy~ |
Damn.
I hope they+families are ok. No idea of the reasons and I don't even want to know them, it's their business. If this will affect SY plans (will wait for news on this before 2012, after the planned gigs, I guess), I'll be super bummed if they won't plan a "goodbye 2012" euro tour, I've only heard "work in progress" versions of the Eternal songs live and now I'm afraid I could well die before having a chance to listen to some of the "songs I want to witness live before I die" off my list (which includes, among others sy gems I never heard live, a proper "hello 2015" Skip tracer). Thanks to both of them for the music, the laughs, everything. Still hoping SY can go on as a "collective". p.s. this will sound silly, but at first I thought they announced a split 7"... |
Even I feel bad!

On second thought, 27 years is a great run. Most don't go that long. I don't care as long as they're happy (and nothing this far leads me to believe anything otherwise). I don't see it being the end of the Youth...I mean, everyone knows that's where the money is for them. Will be interesting to see what happens. And if it is the end of the Youth, oh well to that too. Shit man, they stuck it out for ages. No shortage of tunes.

barely awake..went to a news site.....saw a headline "rocker couple split"...when i clicked on the link..i expected some couple i could care less about splitting..and had also hoped to laugh ......i'm surprised and of course promptly came here...wow..i'm shocked.......and stunned...and not laughing

What a shock, I don't know what to say. I'm so sad.
|
Biggest fan of Sonic Youth ever here. I feel lonely, bad, sad, lost. I saw videos of them, they seemed so happy, I don't know why they split up now.
|
theyve balanced their projects and lives in such a way over the years that id still be very surprised if they dont get back to playing together eventually, given the apt amount of time.

Anyway, this surprised me a lot as I'm sure it did everyone else. Never did we read anything about problems between them, they always managed to keep their private lives to themselves, as it should be. Personally I don't think SY still have another album in them that would amaze me, but I'd be sad to see them go as a band nevertheless, knowing I'd never be able to see them again. However, it's way too early to draw conclusions. To me, SY has been such a steady band over the last 30 years that it would take an awful lot to stop them from playing altogether. They've been Sonic Youth for most of their lives. |
I don't know what to say either...
I'm shocked Gutted... I wish them both well and hope that the inevitable bullshit that will surround this news doesn't cause them or their family (Especially Coco) any unnecessary pain. The mere thought that this may mean the end of SY makes me feel sick to the stomach... but only for selfish reasons. They must do what's best for them. Thanks Thurston and Kim, your creative bond has been an inspiration ! And I know it's not over yet. |

me too .... hm, a caesure for sure This may sound like a sacrilege on this forum, but nothing lasts forever, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. |
WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH HHHHHHH
i have no more intelligent response :( poor kim and thurston and poor coco its so sad. hopefully the band will be able to continue. |
through this year, most of my best friends, who all happened to be couples, separated from their partners. on top of that, I think the same is happening to my 5-year relationship - dissolving for reasons uncertain - and we've been playing together since 2007, and I don't think I could explain what this relationship meant to me.
now I don't know what to think. it must be this year. something in the air. I can't help but think it's sad for all parties involved, but I want to try and stay positive. changes occur. life is weird. Paul Auster. |
...:(
|
Sad news.
|
Let's hang the messenger.
Things had been extremely quiet this year for the band itself, not playing too much since 2010. (er... I'm talking music here) The article names both of them, as if or so that's one more thing they did together. The band decided to play their winter dates. Guess that'll give them clues as to carry on or not, and see how Steve and Lee cope with it (which ain't the easiest thing to do). Well, given they're no longer teenagers, they must know they'll feel sick for a couple of years. That won't heal, but well. Guess they've already focused on their daughter to apease her as much as they can. |
oh well.
|
Strength to Coco, Kim and Thurston...
|
Noooo! :(
Seriously hope this is a joke. There are no words on how great music they've brought and how they changed my life completily! IF this is the end of the band, many many thank you for everything, I love you. |

Yeah. Same here. Their music truly changed my life. I don't know what went on with the couple, and it is none of my business, but I have met both Thurston and Kim and they were both very nice - especially Kim, she is super sweet - with this die-hard fan from Brazil (me) who travelled all the way to New York in more than one occasion just to see them. However, reading that "the future of the band is uncertain" truly depresses me. I cannot except that their November 12 show might be the last one. It's happening in a city 119km from São Paulo, and travel arrangements to that place are extremely complicated and expensive, I honestly don't know if I am going to make it and I am very sad for that. :( |

Neither will I. |
What a depressing Saturday. Makes me look back at my own life... Being 17, alone in the USA, standing in front of their Murray Street studio for 04 hours, waiting for any of them to show up...
|
I guess I'm just gonna keep refreshing this page, like a stubborn child, in hopes that someone close to the band dismisses the rumours that the band might actually break up after Thurston and Kim's divorce.
|
kinda shocking news for me. i would not think that would ever happened. hmmm, to me they were like evidence that there is a real lifetime love. uhmm, well i wonder whats going happen next, coz this is not going to be SY as we know it anymore. also i must say on the other hand this news put it own piece to help me from my first split and being heartbroken (just last week). i wonder who is more heatbroken Kim or T.
wasnt expecting that alright... |
This is there business not ours. Hopefully if they end their marriage they do it with respect to each other and above all with love towards their child.
I hope SY still goes on hopefully there's no reason they can't still work together. But time will tell. I've been married 31 years it was nice to know a famous couple could keep it going as long i have. |
