Cantankerous 09.11.2006 10:46 PM

speaking of sonic youth cassettes, i was up all night editing a tape of bad moon rising.

soniknirve 09.11.2006 10:50 PM

what did you do? make your own mix?

Cantankerous 09.11.2006 10:58 PM

no. well kind of, not really. what i did was edited out the parts i don't like (part of i'm insane, before the drums start, and all of justice is might) and added in the extra CD tracks except satan is boring and then put it onto a tape so i could listen to it outside or in my car something.

CHOUT 09.11.2006 11:04 PM

I don't have any pics except for my sy stash:

Cantankerous 09.11.2006 11:44 PM

Not mine, though. My collection isn't huge unless you're into fag music. Stuff like 3 copies of every Xiu Xiu record and limited edition Xiu Xiu records and more Xiu Xiu records.

HaydenAsche 09.12.2006 12:34 AM

DAMMIT!

Cool, you got a cassette deck?! Exciting.

As the rather anal rententive type I am, I sometimes fuss about how much of a purist I should be when taping LPs and CDs. Do I tape to preserve the LP and make as close a facsimile as I can? Or do I tape to create the "ideal" listening experience for me--edit, etc.?

Either way, it's fun. Mix tapes are fun, too.

The Lung 09.12.2006 11:53 AM

I got nearly all of these records when I was about 15/16, I havn't bought many records for years. This is just a small selection of my 12" and 7" and most of you will think they suck

I'm just a record collector hatchling at 14 but there you are.

yeah i did, it's a piece of shit though. i put the one back in my car too.
i edited it because there are parts of it that i don't want to listen to, you know what i mean though, like the parts on i'm insane where they're not really playing, before the drums come in, and then i edited out justice is might because i just don't like it. it's not a perfect record despite what most people here insist.

gmku 09.12.2006 04:17 PM

Well, most cassette decks for the masses aren't the most audiophile-pleasing machines ever built--unless you got the coin for the pricey Nakamichis, et al. I'm happy with my mediocre Sony and Denon decks.

Cantankerous 09.12.2006 04:18 PM

i don't even know what mine is. i think it's a sony but it's obscenely old.

gmku 09.12.2006 04:20 PM

Sometimes older is better when it comes to components. They're often better built, less plastic, and sometimes the retro look is nicer. I have a 1975 Pioneer tuner that I swear is sooo much better than any digital tuner I've ever had. My decks are from the early 1990s. Bought the Denon used, as a matter of fact.

My records are pretty much the only thing in my house that could be considered "organized."
Even that is a fairly recent development; I just got those browsers a year ago. I only had one small browser before, and the rest were in long crates. I sorta knew where stuff was, but not like now. I rediscovered a lot of great ones when I set things up like I have them now.

i don't know where fucking anything is except stuff i listen to all the time.

gmku 09.13.2006 09:04 AM

So do you just have records and CDs lying around in piles under clothes and trash and stuff? Pick one up, naw that's not it, toss it aside, scrounge through piles of T-shirts. No, I can't believe that anyone who cares as much as you do about music, especially vinyl, really does this. Nice try, though.

porkmarras 09.13.2006 09:07 AM

That's nonsense. My records are hugely disorganized but i always manage to find what i want.Having them all organized like that is for people who obviously don't go out much.Music is for listening not to be looked at,let's not forget this.

gmku 09.13.2006 09:12 AM

Well, you got that right. I don't go out much. But I also believe that collecting music can be about the art of preserving it, too. And no, music IS to be looked at. Cover art! Colored vinyl!

porkmarras 09.13.2006 09:17 AM

Let's face it,the first thing that i look out for is the music. If the music is crap the cover art can go into the rubbish bin.Preserving and archiving is all well and fine but from the sort of records that you say you buy i think that there isn't much that hasn't been preserved all too well many times before.BURN YOUR DOORS RECORDS GMKU!!BURN THEM!!

ondskan 09.13.2006 09:21 AM

Heeey Hip Priest, how much for the Kopyright Liberation Front LP?

Never seen one before, must have!

porkmarras 09.13.2006 09:23 AM

It's the same as posting on a thread to show the world the 10 eps that you own by a band in a bad quality photograph.Pointless,a bit like:'Show me your willy and i'll show you mine'.

gmku 09.13.2006 09:25 AM

I don't pretend to preserve my music for posterity, just for my own needs.

I would burn my Beatles records before I'd bring a flame close to my Doors stuff. No. Jim and his naked Indian friend have paid a visit and told me I am doing the right thing.

gmku 09.13.2006 09:26 AM

Kind of fun though, showing off willies, ain't it?

porkmarras 09.13.2006 09:28 AM

Yeah. When you are confident that it'll make an impression,of course.

gmku 09.13.2006 09:31 AM

I have to admit, I've often bought music based on great cover art, sometimes not even knowing what the music sounds like. I've been pleasantly surprised more often than disappointed, and this way of album buying does get one out of one's comfort zone sometimes. Hard to do all the time, of course, but sometimes when you don't know what you want, it's an interesting way to pick up on something new.

porkmarras 09.13.2006 09:36 AM

That's true,i'm not saying the opposite.Hundreads of times i've bought a record simply because i liked the cover,i knew the label, there was a musician on it that i had an interest in etc etc.But if the music is crap,it's crap.I should start a thread about good covers that contain crap records, actually.

gmku 09.13.2006 09:38 AM

True. The music is why we buy the thing in the first place, no denying that. It's so excellent in those cases when both come together--great music, great art.

tw2113 09.13.2006 12:54 PM

i'm not cool enough to buy vinyl

Rob Instigator 09.13.2006 01:05 PM

I love great cover art and I have several display stands for albums I love.

Fox 09.13.2006 01:40 PM

I don't have a picture, but a list...

http://hypernintendomaniak.free.fr/Disco/

I think I have a good collection for a 15 year old person (16 in a three weeks, okay)...

Note that at the time I write I still don't have added the two records I bought today (The Double - Loose in the Air and Radiohead - Amnesiac)
