:fuckyou:Sonic Youth @ The Vic – Sun. June 28th 2009
http://eyegunk.wordpress.com See a lil' more details on my blog |
holy shit! that's one billion times better than the 27th.
Silver rocket, catholic block, and cross the breeze?! thats so awesome. |
That's a fucking hell of a set list too! Lucky Chicago folk!
|
Have to agree: I would never complain about Hey Joni or The Sprawl being on a setlist. Bull in the Heather makes me roll my eyes, and I think they've played it live every single time I've seen them (which is about five times).
The second setlist looks awesome! She Is Not Alone is a teeny bit predictable and I don't think it's an ideal choice for opener, but a set with Silver Rocket, Catholic Block, Walkin Blue, et al. And The Sprawl and Breeze as the encore? Holy shit. Climax of greatness. Hope they do that in Texas. |
Bull in the Heather should go. It is a nice song but I never understood why it was considered to be a "hit".
|
Let's start a petition. ;)
To me, Bull in the Heather has always sounded pretty weak live... it's one of the few songs that sound much better on the album I think. Every time I hear the studio version being played somewhere it always strikes me that it's a much better song than I remembered, probably because I mostly hear it on bootlegs/live shows. Other songs they should get rid of: 100% (sounded good during the Dirty tour, but I never liked it ever since they started playing it again in 2000/2001 or whenever it was) Drunken Butterfly Kool Thing Teenage Riot (I can understand if these latter 3 are fan favourites, but I've seen them too many times). |
I'm diggin' the near completeness of The Eternal being played live !!
That's what I'm looking forward to the most. It does seem that the other songs are from regular 'oldies' stack that they pull from. I'm always hoping for a rare to very rare track (not played the past decade) to come out of the bag to complement The Eternal. Something grindy and trippy like Youth Against Facism, Female Mechanic, Self Obsessed and Sexy, Tunic, Brave Men Run, Stereo Sanctity......... |

At the McCarren Pool show in 2008, half the set was Daydream songs and I actually overheard someone say, "Oh come on, they played these songs last year when they did the whole album.":confused::confused::confused: |
nice setlist on the second night. uhmmm, we need to paste the both setlist to setlist 2009 thread, which is somewhere here.
|
Attendees of both shows are undoubtedly counting all their blessings today..! ;)
|
They actually change there set list the next day now that takes enormous talent.Without practising they add 4 diffrent songs. That being said i really hope Tom violence and pacific coast are played in Toronto. The show starts at 8 does anyone know if theres an opening band.

Excellent set!!! Second encore would have blown my mind if I had been there. Also, great choice to leave Sacred Trickster to the end of the actual set. |

Here are a few pictures I took from the 28th show. Sorry that they're not good pics, but that was the last thing on my mind.

Is that Thurston playing an acoustic!? What song was that for?

i think massage the history ... |
I was there Saturday and there was no acoustic for that song that I saw.

yeah it was for massage the history |
Holy fuck? They played Catholic Block. Okay, that's amazing.
About Bull in the Heather - I had always really looked forward to it at shows but I only saw them do it live for first time last year at River to River. I must admit, it's kinda weak live but still. Seeing them play the song that introduced me to Sonic Youth and turned my life was a peak experience. |

Wow, they really nailed the sound on last night's show. I could tell during "No Way" (which is AMAZING live--you suckasses that eliminated it on Survivor are going to be sorry when you hear it) that Sunday's show would be significantly better than Saturday's. I didn't realize how many kinks in the sound Saturday had until last night.
My favorite part: Thurston right after "She is Not Alone" said "We're here; We're queer; Get used to it". The gay pride parade was happening nearly right outside the venue the whole day. "Catholic Block" was a wonderful surprise--it sounded spot on. The encores were just perfect. Thurston seemed to recognize how good it sounded, as he looked post-orgasmic as it wrapped up and said, "wow, we haven't played that one in a while." I didn't realize that they had played the whole album (save Bobby Pyn) up until that point, so I didn't think the encores would pack such a punch. "Silver Rocket" nearly made me shit my pants (it might have a little)--and then to hear the next two songs in order. Wow. I got some great video including "Massage" in its entirety. It'll all be up on my blog later today, so chiggity check it out. I'm in a daze as I actually just got home from the show now--he he. |
|
Also, they busted out "Walkin' Blue", I eat crow on that 'un. But I maintain
no "Thunderclap" ever! |
We can only hope. (Just kidding -- I still wanna hear it just to hear it.)
RE: Bull -- GREAT GREAT song. One of the best. The album version is a PERFECT recording. No live version could capture the essence of the album cut. So it kind of becomes a whole different song live, more much explosive and 'rock' -- which is cool.. but not the same.. and doesn't warrant being in almost every set list. Unless they wanna bring back Starfield Road. |
If they brought back Starfield Road I would most likely shit my pants on the spot.
|
Yeah, the "Starfield Road" segue into it was always brilliant.
I just finished my blog from last night. I had a lot of formatting problems, but it looks ok. I have a youtube link on it to the entire "Massage the History" along with a couple pics and short videos from "She is Not Alone" and "Nature Scene". |
Just watched the "Massage" vid. Jesus Christ almighty. I love Kim coming in early. Just a li'l.
I'm gonna go apeshit when they play that in DC. I'm seeing them in NY, but that's seated. I'm talking up front, standing, wooooooooosh. |

"The Entrance Band" I believe... |
OMG, I must stop visiting this thread!! I too keep telling myself, "don't check the setlists, let yourself be pleasantly surprised..." But god that is so hard to do. I was really concenred after seeing that first list, but the second has rekindled my faith...Now if I can just resist temptation and stop visiting this!

Ach, another reviewer that doesn't know what he's talking about. It was a fluke that Chicago was playing, not "Happy Together" by the Turtles. Lee said, "Is that Chicago", not "Is that your combo?" "Is that your combo" doesn't make a lick of sense. He must have left before "The World Looks Red" which totally rocked old school. |
Me and you should be the only ones permitted to write SY concert reviews,
Mr. Mike. Sometimes I really feel that way. |

Yes, I agree. We should be awarded badges. I'm looking forward to reading yours, as I'm sure you are looking forward to getting your Sonic Jones satiated. When does the tour start for you? |
July 3rd, in NY.

Twice in my life have i seen Sonic Youth play two shows in the same venue two consecutive days, in Paris, France. Both times the second show was extremely better, setlistwise, soundwise and energy wise. |
