Well, in that case, I was saying, people are agreeing with me -- even it's privately and they're not as vocal about it. I was also saying, "if I'm such a worthless person why do people rep me?" etc. I don't care about rep so much. I just know that most people aren't going to defend me or agree with me in the context of threads, for whatever reason, but they do it privately... so I have to keep speaking for the silent majority, in this case. And the only way to do that is to mention the otherwise pointless reputation system. |
picking on new people is weak, also jokes are supposed to be funny
|
Didn't pick on the new poster. Picked on his thread. Also, he was cool about it and has proven himself to be cool in the process. All in all, the whole thing turned out very cool, if I do say so.

It's a fucking internet site dedicated to a band, for fuck's sake.
|
atsonicpark is such a jerk!

Regardless of what my "research" has proven or disproved, I think we can all agree that if they really did tape over the Sister mastertapes they picked thier worst album to do so... I will take Jet set over 90% of albums out there but no doubt it is the weakest Sonic Youth album (even admitted by the band!) To be honest with you too, yesterday was my first visit to the message board (but Ive been to other bands message boards so I know how that works), and I just happen to be blown away by the fact that within ten minutes I found something out that I never knew and was able to hear it for myself. Sister is by far my favorite SY album and to know it was wiped for Jet set is alittle saddening, but it is what it is...
|
the band said jet set is their weakest album?
That's something I didn't know! |

I always thought dirty was their most successful album though (hence why it was given the reissue treatment first). I guess someone somewhere thought it'd repeat nevermind's success though... I can see that being disappointing.
|
it doesn't prove they recorded over the sister master tapes, for all we know they could have played sister in to the mixing desk from a walkman and just recorded/mixed it at a really low level.

That's interesting. I always figured Dirty was the one they were least impressed with. In the Silver Rockets, Kool Things doc, Kim makes it sound like they were eager to move away from the kind of experiment of straight rock that was Dirty. Then again, Jet Set doesn't get mentioned AT ALL in that documentary so who knows. It certainly seems to get the least amount of attention. Do ANY songs from that album ever get played lived? |
probably just bull.
I know steve was unhappy about the drum samples mixed in with his drums for dirty. |
Oh really? I thought that was Sister he hated the drums on. I know I do.
|
He might hate the drums on lots of records. dunno. I think I read the info about him hatin' the dirty drums over on the mustang site.
|
what do they say in that book that came out last year about ejstns? not the stevie chick one, the one that was supposed to be good.

that's something like what we did --- we still have the master tapes to Sister - just being silly- oh boy, the internet. ss |
hmm, maybe the recorded jet-set in a haste, but I have a thurston-quote in mind, that he thought it to be a real cool record - because of its raw-edge-style production and its artwork
|
edit: referring to Toilet's post...fuck i should quote more often--Kim called it "a really weird record" and the author intimated that several band members could not recall many of its songs.

steve rules!

i just solved the greatest mystery in the history of rock n roll

God bless Steve Shelley!

And none of this ever would have ever happened if the thread starter
had used the site search engine and thought, "Oh, it's been done." |
Haha. Man, I've replied to at least 100 threads with "use the search" but it doesn't work anymore. People love repeating themselves.

I doubt very much they recorded over the masters. It's too great a coincidence that a key lyric is heard between each song. And yes, I've posted this before. |

It's mind-boggling that people on this board don't just do whatever you tell them to! ;) |

how much time do you guys dedicate to reading inane gossip about yourselves? |
^^^
Sorry Steve, but I'm pretty sure I recall this rumor being started by the band. Possibly Thurston's sense of humor coming out in an interview? |

THANK YOU!! My sentiments EXACTLY. I've been a member since the old board and can even recall when this website was just a black screen that said Sonic Youth.com coming soon. Somebody wants to make a post about SY related info, FRICKIN' LET THEM without this "im the shit cuz I have a zillion posts" guy giving them unecessary hassle about it! And try this news flash on for size: maybe there are people out there that were not aware of the sister/jet set thing, (such as myself) and this is ACTUAL NEWS! I wouldn't have known to search for the topic, because I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW IT EXISTED, so this guy has (can you freaking beleive it) given me new and relevant information!!! Concrete Abutments thank you for saying what's been on my mind because this isn't the first time I've come here looking for straight up good music conversation and get nothing but message board prickery from the freakin' orange sash wearing school safety patrol. Seacrest out |
They liked the way Jet set was more produced thier way and they really worked hard on Dirty but didn't like the process. The whole thing with Jet set is they knew the music was weak and were pretty spent after all the hard work on dirty. They took a more simplistic approach to Jet set but even down to the art they knew it wasn't going to be pleasing. They almost did this as a test for geffen that they really would retain control over thier sound, art, music material... It just was a pretty weak effort. Almost destined to fail. They really didn't even tour or try hard to promote it. (some of that being because Kim was pregnant) Thus, they decided with Washing machine they would rededicate themselves to the songs, patch things up with Lee, and record the record they always wanted to record. Thats why really Washing machine is a breath of fresh air in the middle of the corporate 90s. I really don't know how washing machine stands up in the eyes of the average SY fan, but it probably is my second favorite album next to (1) Sister and (3) Dirty.

Steve, I hope you're not reading through all the Eternal-related posts flooding the board, ha ha. Has the "noisejob!" shirt I and a friend gave you in Bolzano ended up in a bonefire to heat up cold winter nights :D? ha ha. Another great morning on SYG making myself look like an ass. |

Finally. Why couldn't you guys have just said that in any of the other million threads about this topic and ended it?:D |
