Seagulls screaming "kiss her, kiss her!" was a good one.

As was - Meanwhile, back in communist Russia.

Jazzfinger are another case in point. I have actively enjoyed their music, but refuse to buy it on account of the name.

porkmarras 06.15.2006 08:18 AM

Dogs die in hot cars

Savage Clone 06.15.2006 08:27 AM

DemonBox:
That is one of the dumbest band names ever.
Dumber than AIDS Wolf, even.

DemonBox 06.15.2006 08:36 AM

Yeah, it's so stupid. I would never own a record by that band, it would ruin my collection

but wolf AIDS come pretty darn close.

ZZZZ are awesome

So are AIDS Wolf

i know yeah, t'is almost a hangable offence, i have a friend who stuffs them down my throat any chance he can get but to no avail, i know J is a shit-hot guitarist and all that but i can honestly put my hand on heart and say i dont like them, they just dont do it for me. i could lie..... but ermmmm then i'd be lying.

Savage Clone 06.16.2006 01:10 PM

Fishmonkey,
My loathing of Dino goes way back.
Crappy tone, flailing guitar, caterwauling offkey vocals, none to my taste.
The guy knows his way around the neck, but I have never fround his music remotely interesting or innovative in the least, and I am mystified that so many people hold a torch for Dinosaur. It was not interesting in its time, and has aged poorly to my ears. I saw them back then, bought a couple of albums, gave it a chance and was constantly annoyed with what I heard.
All that gear, and still such godawful tone.
Just a personal taste issue. It should be said that I enjoy guitar solos, and gratuitous ones are fine by me; just not the Mascis style.
This is nothing I haven't said before on here a million times, so apologies to those who wish I would shut up about this. Just wanted to give fishmonkey some support.

thanks man, sorry to all the dino fans also, but i know what you mean, and i appricate it, my mate is dino jr nutz - now i mean J Mascis batty, but i just dont see it. i bought one or two albums too, i swear i did but they never sank in. fuck it. you win some you lose some.
i'm sure i love a load of bands that would make ye puke. if we all loved the same music we'd be boring bastards.
and thanks savage clone, when i have that re-occuring argument with my mate Boo down the pub on the topic of DJ Vs SY, i'll be sure to drop yr name.

Every Time I Die is such fun music. Sure, it is mediocre hardcore but it is fun.

"I'm a cunt." Every time that song comes on I feel the need to start hardcore dancing.

X bands typically suck except Xiu Xiu and XBXRX.

Almost Crimes 06.16.2006 03:56 PM

I never really understood not listening to a band based on their name. That's why I didn't listen to Broken Social Scene when they were first popular, and now they're my favorite band. And what about XTC? Not exactly my style but I know plenty of people who like them.

HaydenAsche 06.16.2006 03:57 PM

XTC is dang gross.

BSS is awesome.

I think I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness is a pretty cool name, and their EP isn't bad.

CHOUT 06.16.2006 09:27 PM

Anybody want to move to wisconsin with me and start a ska band called wiSKAnsin?
Pick it up! Pick it up!

luxinterior 06.16.2006 09:45 PM

I've never heard the Arctic Monkeys or Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, but I'm certain they are the two worst bands ever.

CHOUT 06.16.2006 09:48 PM

I judged Camper Van Beethoven by their name, but I'm a big fan now.

I'm steering clear of any of those bands with 'last name' names, like
McKinsey, Hollister etc. I bet they suck so bad.

krastian 06.16.2006 10:40 PM

Yeah CVB is great.

I'm in.

Everyneurotic 06.16.2006 11:44 PM

i always give music a chance, even if i'm tipped off that it sucks, sometimes i get surprised, most of the time i don't.

even when i know a band sucks and they have a new album, i'm most likely to check it out and give them a second chance, even if it turns out to suck...then i stay clear from hearing it again.

by the way, nice stereotyping you guys do.

acousticrock87 06.17.2006 12:08 AM

I like a ton of the bands mentioned here. I may very well be the only one here who can look past the fact that Conor Oberst is whiney and actually listen to his music. Eh, oh well.

I'll listen to anything, but country and rap usually turn me off.

I'm not going to clap my hands or say yeah for anyone, much less a band with that in their name.

Onani Nic 06.17.2006 12:42 AM

I saw an ad for a band called "Story of the Used".

They are either
a) the worst band ever
b) a parody band

or maybe both at once.....

Conor is a good songwriter, I'm not much of a fan, but he's a talented guy. the worst thing about Bright Eyes are Bright eye's fans.

I used to despise country music when I was younger, but then I realised alot of what I listen to and really love, is country influenced and has a tinge of country. And hey, I love Johnny Cash.

And for rap, I have only two words: Public Enemy!

I think most current bands with names that qualify as a sentence are bands I will avoid. It's pretty convenient actually.

I just heard some XTC I liked recently, some early stuff. They've had lots of songs that blow hard. Peter Pumpkinhead?

Yep, and a band choosing to call themselves Agoraphobic Nosebleed isn't playing any part in establishing and/or perpetuating those stereotypes, I suppose...

Glice 06.17.2006 01:30 PM

See, metal bands are great at having great names that make you want to like their music. How do you separate the good from the bad in the Grind genre? By the greatness of their names.

I'm also in the non-Dino boning crowd. They're ok, but I don't really love them like so many. Then again, I'm going off Loveless these days, and I'm not too keen on Slint any more.

Inhuman 06.17.2006 01:35 PM

Clap Your Hands and Say Yeah
Beaudoin Soundclash

I don't know about Clap Your hands, because I might hear them at the festival because SY is playing there too. As for Beaudoin Soundclash, I've heard some pretty awful stuff about them. My friend that's really into My Chemical Atreyufold likes them, so I'd question listening to them

didn't you say that the same friend is a fan of Neutral Milk Hotel?

Good point, but out of the few hundred CD's he has, that's a single one that I like. Oh, and Black Sabbath. Other than those, I dislike everything else, so I'm willing to bet I wouldn't like these either. Our tastes don't have too many intersections. And c'mon, he said "Sonic Youth make me want to fall asleep" after hearing Swimsuit Issue...
