yep thats another good one. not too long, not really abstract in any way and one of the songs that could manage to bring somebody to listen to instrumental music too, pretty easily

This Is Not Here 09.11.2008 05:15 PM

It suits the purpose of a middle ground between straight forward songs and improvised noise, you're right. But sadly I don't like Rain On Tin at all, so it's not going on.

mil_pl 09.11.2008 05:20 PM

i do not like orthodox fans, dot.

PAULYBEE2656 09.11.2008 05:29 PM

give that person the silver sesions, syr 8 and tv shit and let them deal with it themselves...

Derek 09.11.2008 05:29 PM

COMPLETELY agreed!

I've to burn cd with this tracks for myself by the way :)

hits of sunshine? a lot of people get impatient by long songs, especially one where the same riff is played for 11 mins.
also, i think hits are for squares is a pretty good compilation for a beginner, it has a lot of variety and includes a lot of classics, with some treats such as World Looks Red and Expressway.

This is exactly why I thought twice before making this thread.

maybe you're right, but i love this kind of light jamming. and lyrics with strong side of thurston singing. and structure of this song is good too.

noisereductions 09.11.2008 07:50 PM

I think "Reena" is one of their best post-90's songs. Probaby "Sympathy for the Strawberry" as well.

This Is Not Here 09.11.2008 08:04 PM

I'd never have called Sympathy as even remotely like a pop song. Still great though.

HECKLER SPRAY 09.11.2008 08:08 PM

Expressway to your skull : you've got the "pop-rock" part, the noisy part, and the improv part in one song.

noisereductions 09.11.2008 08:09 PM

I didnt say "Sympathy" was a pop song. I was just adding how much I liked it.

RanaldoNecro 09.11.2008 09:39 PM

If she likes "Tuck N Dar" then I suggest you propose marriage immediatley...

Death & the Maiden 09.12.2008 01:00 AM

I think Teen Age Riot should be on there. Maybe Kissability as well.

Green Magnesium 09.12.2008 02:54 AM

If you're looking for quicker/breezier/lighter tracks for a compilation... I recommend (from off the top of my head)....

Burning Spear
World Looks Red
I Love Her All the Time
StarPower
Shadow of a Doubt
Kotton Krown
Into the Groovey
Teenage Riot
Dirty Boots
Disappearer
100%
Drunken Butterfly
Genetic
JC
Bull in the Heather
Sweet Shine
Little Trouble Girl
Hoarfrost
Sunday
Free City Rhymes
Empty Page
Unmade Bed
What a Waste
Incinerate
Jams Run Free

I don't know whether that will all fit on one disc or not. Doesn't seem likely that it would.

GrungeMonkey 09.12.2008 04:41 AM

you need to whack on a few longer, more experimental songs, cos otherwise, your friend will be given a kinda false impression of what SY are like... Just spread them about the tracklist and put shorter poppier songs in between!

you need to stop wasting time on other people and settle in to a weekend of headphones, Sister and Washing Machine. Whats the matter with you?

SonicBebs 09.12.2008 05:29 AM

or
i'd definatly put Strawberry on, and Wildflower Soul, and Empty Page

pbradley 09.12.2008 06:39 AM

Why sugarcoat it for them? Give 'em what you think are SY's strongest tunes regardless of accessibility. One track from every album. Let the person given the album worry about whether they'll like it or not.

noisereductions 09.12.2008 07:19 AM

pbradley's got a point.

Although it seems from most of This Is Not Here's replies that although we're 4 pages deep into this thread, he's not eally that open to anyone's suggestions.

greedrex 09.12.2008 07:46 AM

burn the whole SY discog on a DVDr.

akprodr 09.12.2008 08:05 AM

Ya gotta have some of Lee's songs, no? Skip Tracer, Eric's Trip, Mote?

I guess I'm the only person here who doesn't like Expressway?

noisereductions 09.12.2008 08:11 AM

You are. Expressway rules.

But Lee songs yr right about.... especially if this dude wants "pop". I mean, "Genetic" for cryin' out loud!

noisereductions 09.12.2008 08:12 AM

When I get home I'm gonna dig up the SONIC LOVE mix that I made for my wife back in the day and post the tracklist. It made her appreciate 'em (and she's not into noise) and yet I made sure to feature some variety.

tasteinmen 09.12.2008 09:39 AM

maybe this collection?

1 Teenage Riot
2 Bull In the Heather
3 Sunday
4 Disappearer
5 The Sprawl
6 (I Got a) Catholic Block
7 Washing Machine
8 Unmade Bed
9 What a Waste
10 I Don't Want to Push It
11 Death Valley 69
12 Starpower
13 Hoarfrost
14 Shadow of a Doubt
15 Renegade Princess
16 Expressway to Yr Skull

Derek 09.12.2008 10:46 AM

Why did I always think noisereductions was 16? Hah, unless he got married at 16 and back in the day was when he was a preteen.

My head hurts, I thought a 12 year old was 16 years old today.

noisereductions 09.12.2008 10:58 AM

I'm 27.

noisereductions 09.12.2008 11:04 AM

You were probably thinking of atsonicpark. He's only 16 (inches tall).

diskaholic-anonymous 09.12.2008 12:45 PM

once i went to the record store and i listened some kid ask to the seller if he knew the band who plays "sugar kane", then the seller hesitate for a moment, and said "i think it's sonic something...maybe... young??!! - jesus! i thought and laugh to my self - than i helped him and said to the kid - "you should listen first "Daydream Nation", "Evol" or maybe "Sister", one song it's not good enough for you learn about this great band" - i think it's a good start to meet sonic youth.

Sheriff Rhys Chatham 09.12.2008 12:57 PM

Sonic Young, haha.

greedrex 09.12.2008 04:04 PM

actually joking aside.. thats the best option.. its easily digestable sonic fodder for virgins to chew on... not bad at all, has a bit of everything and is fine!

added cdr with terrys carrot, silver session and master dik is of course a necessity!

noisereductions 09.13.2008 03:30 PM

the mix I made for my wife:

1. I Dreamed I Dream
2. Shadow Of A Doubt
3. Star Power
4. Tuck N Dar
5. Kotton Krown
6. Addicted To Love
7. Kool Thing
8. That's All I Know (Right Now)
9. Mama, You've Been On My Mind
10. Sugar Kane
11. The Diamond Sea (Edit)
12. Superstar
13. The Empty Page
14. Dude Ranch Nurse
15. Reena
16. Jams Run Free

HECKLER SPRAY 09.13.2008 03:55 PM

mil_pl 09.13.2008 04:04 PM

NWRA 09.13.2008 05:44 PM

What about some more songs off EJST&NS such as Starfield Road or (particularly) Screaming Skull?

Macbeth is brilliant and it has a catchy riff and catchy keyboard bit... And being an instrumental it could break-up some of the repetitive parts of the compilation (when there are a few Dirty/Rathed Ripped songs in a row).

I think Washing Machine and Sympathy For The Strawberry are the most suitable long songs.
