atsonicpark 04.23.2008 04:51 PM

Uh... what?

Anyway:

That's more fun.

Rob Instigator 04.23.2008 04:53 PM

she did look fine in the cannonball video though

atsonicpark 04.23.2008 04:56 PM

She has a nice voice.

I like when her voice breaks in "Oh".

Toilet & Bowels 04.23.2008 05:43 PM

i think mountain battles is very good & the best record the breeders (or the pixies, or the amps) have ever made, i'm confused as to why everyone else seems to hate it.

!@#$%! 04.23.2008 05:44 PM

I haven't listened to this yet. Thanks Pauly, I will give it a shot today.

Has anyone ever seen The Breeders live? Good fun all around, Kim Deal is a real stage animal and puts on a show like no other. When they played the Astoria a few years ago it was one of the best gigs I ever went to.

The Pixies are better, though, no contest.

SonicBebs 04.24.2008 03:17 AM

The Breeders can be fun, Flipside is fun, Tipp City (amps, i know) is fun, Safari is fun, Fortunatly Gone (bah bah bah bah) is fun. Mountain Battles is not fun but like i said its full of Minimalism and whatever way you look at it, Minimalism is not fun. Its beautiful but its not fun.
But who wants 'fun' anyway? I'd rather have warmth.
Argueing about Music is fun

SonicBebs 04.24.2008 03:18 AM

I saw them in Camden last week. Excellent gig

PAULYBEE2656 04.24.2008 05:42 AM

i saw them in 1994 or 5. around last splash tour and yeah, it was good jovial indie frolicks and bad jokes about the irish and guns and bombs.... WE ARE IN DUBLIN YOU EEJIT KIM!!!!!! fuckin amerians!

Andrés 04.27.2008 07:29 PM

I really liked the album, maybe it has too many mellow songs, but that's ok

Thank you!! This is basically a more concise and understandable version of something I wrote in an earlier thread after the leak. Sure, nothing on this album jumps out as "look at me! I'm a great song!" But I think that sort of thing is exactly what Kim was railing against to begin with. If I may quote a portion of one of my myspace blogs (sorry about the off-topic beginning, but I promise it morphs into something relevant):

"* And I was supposed to get an early night so I could be refreshed and ready to get caught up on lectures today, but this documentary about Van Gogh and Gaugin totally sucked me in. I had *no* idea about the unhealthy dynamic between the two, and how Gaugin was an arrogant, money-grubbing, syphilitic ass-hole. And while I knew about Van Gogh’s ear thing, I never realized just *how* insecure and fragile he was, which gives his paintings--and his insistence on authentically documenting the moment (as opposed to Gaugin, who faulted him for not "painting from memory" (and incidentally, "Starry Night"--done in an asylum--was his answer to this))--an added sense of immediacy and brilliance. It’s like the Breeders vs. the majority of artists: while the songs are important, it’s just as important to understand the exact moment or set of circumstances that the artist’s work--their response to life around them--took place in. Music recorded flawlessly in a sterile, sound-proof environment lacks any connection to the reality of the moment. So what if "Bang On" sounds like it was "recorded in a box under the stairs"--maybe it was. Wouldn’t that have been kind of fun? And then when you listen to it, you can almost imagine being there at the time, hearing all the flaws, giggles, and scrappy brilliance that make it particular to that moment, impossible to reproduce."

Plus, I recently (April 11th) lost my partner of 9 years to a drug overdose. Even before it happened, this album was to me both the epitome of a "drug album" and an "anti-drug album," which in itself I found incredibly intruiging. The night it happened, I had listened to the album as I smoked my joint, and "Night of Joy" and "We're Gonna Rise" summed up exactly what both myself and Matt were going through (respectively). And to anyone who thinks this album lacks musicality, just listen to "Spark": weird chord changes abound, and it bounces back and forth between musically jarring (suggestive of the lightning-struck power lines she's describing), and eerily serene (as she sings how "clouds were bruised when the day broke"). While I am normally not the type to make sweeping generalizations about others' musical tastes, enough of it has been done from the opposite camp that I feel within my right to say that anyone who can't at least appreciate this album for the intelligence and thought that went into it is a short-sighted dolt who really doesn't deserve to be offering opinions on music EVER. (So there! :b)

Also, The Pixies fucking sucked, The Breeders are tolerable.

ha ha , yeah good joke; Pixies sucked mmm ha ha
irony irony

samuel 05.03.2008 05:58 PM

This band is great. Kim, Kelley, Mando, and Jose work well together. Mountain Battles has been my favorite album released in a while. Plus, I admire that it was recorded all wave. At the moment, my favorite songs are Spark and Night of Joy. Istanbul has a funky feel that I like too. I cannnottt wait to see them at the 9:30 Club.

Aww! So cool. I wish I could find it for 50 cents let alone on vinyl.

My favorite Breeders album is probably Pod or Title TK. I think that Title TK is their most solid but Pod has my favorite songs by them. The first half of Last Splash is solid as fuck though. I haven't heard the stuff by the Amps yet but I still like Mountain Battles.

I just saw them at Coachella this year and I was sort of dissapointed. I guess I expected them to be as solid as Sonic Youth at Coachella last year and they weren't; that's not really a fair comparison though. But when I saw The Jicks the next day and had the same expectations, they were almost as good... So fucking solid. That new Jicks album is amazing. I really need to hear the Silver Jews because anything that Malkmus touches is awesome.

greedrex 05.04.2008 03:03 AM

listened to last splash just a week ago ,ou of nostalgia. doesn't bring back any memories, but i found it FRESH
Pod is also really nice.
Think it went downwards as from TITLE TK; nice but lacking some of the old vibe.
mountain battles is MEH
love the artwork though

Bicorn Halfelven 05.05.2008 12:05 AM

I totally love Mountain Battles.

Definitely in my top five this year, dont' need to hear the rest. Kim's vocals resonate with me so wonderfully, I couldn't imagine life without the Breeders. Last Splash was my introduction to Kim as a youngin', and the fascination blossomed from there.

As much as I love Last Splash, I think Title TK is my favorite. Everything on that record sounds so close, personal and intimate to me. "Off You" is a stone cold jam.

Mountain Battles ended up delivering everything I wanted from the Breeders and more and I look forward to finally seeing them at the end of the month (still kicking myself for skipping out on the last tour).

atsonicpark 05.05.2008 06:32 AM

Top 5 of the year?

It won't even be in my top 500 of the year in all likelihood.

ZEROpumpkins 05.05.2008 07:00 AM

It seems whenever a band has been around for a while and just reformed and released an album, people will hate it, even if it's good. (Like beyond)

they never broke up

dazedcola 05.08.2008 10:06 PM

I know this isn't the best record of the year, but you guys are just exaggeratingly hating on it. Did you really expect another Pod or Last Splash? Im glad that they're at least looking forward with their music and not just trying to rehash the past. It seems like a lot of you guys have way too high standards for a breeders record and if its not a masterpiece then its fucking garbage.

The new record is a huge improvement on Title TK. Thats probably their worst record yet. Although im a fan of mountain battles im not gonna say its great, but it is good. I love that opening track "overglazed" it has this great divine feeling like you're in the air. "Regalame esta noche" is such a beautiful romantic song that drifts my mind away to some hot spanish night where i have an affair with some gorgeous spanish woman. That german punk song was great as was their little comeback anthem "we're gonna rise".

The album definetly has some weak points on it, especially the title track. I can never understand why bands name albums after one of the weaker songs. Kim sounds like she's struggling to get back on her feet after dealing with her alcoholism sounding lonley and bitter on some tracks. I think this is like an average record. 3/5

atsonicpark 05.09.2008 04:32 AM

I don't "expect" anything from a band, but I HOPE that their songwriting progresses at some point over the course of, uh, 17 years or so (!). This is just a lazy, bad, half-written (maybe quarter-written) record. Nothing else to say really. Title TK was at least more INTERESTING than this, if not really "good".

floatingslowly 05.09.2008 10:15 AM

I like it. the rest of you can fuck off.

contrelefuckingsexisme 05.11.2008 12:58 PM

i think it's shit
and the fact that i think that it's shit makes me feel really bad...

SonicBebs 05.11.2008 04:17 PM

then lie to yourself dude

atsonicpark 05.11.2008 04:31 PM

Why feel bad about it being shit?

They're just a really inconsistent band who doesn't know how to write songs. There's a million bands like that.

I just got the new Secret Chiefs 3 album -- now there's an album!

EyeballGrowth 05.12.2008 12:48 AM

Haven't heard it yet. I totally forgot about it. I can't wait to hear it though, one of my favorite bands ever as a kid. Last Splash is one of the best albums of the 90's

samuel 05.12.2008 01:23 PM

Silver's probably my favorite Pixies' song.
Mountain Battles' title track may be my favorite off the album (however, I can't deny Spark...)
If Glorious is a gem, then Mountain Battles isn't half-written but rather double-written if that were anyway possible.
I think if you're a Breeders fan, then you'll like the album. It's neither better nor worse then Title TK, Last Splash, or Pod. It's something different, new, and admirable. It was recorded all wave, no computer generations or enhancements. It's real.

I'm not keen on this one either.

i never saw the appeal on the breeders, i was never fond of kim in the pixies and "cannonball" is one of the most annoying songs ever. i do like her backing vocals in the pixies and "gigantic".

batreleaser 05.12.2008 05:33 PM

cmon, beyond could have been so so so so so so much worse. its an enjoyable listen.

like i said before though, the only real recent reunion thats produced excellent records in my opinion is mission of burma.

Everyneurotic 05.12.2008 05:36 PM

i'm pretty tolerant to guitar solos, and i love pretty much everything dino has done (including hand it over); but the beyond is just 5 minutes solos with some mumbling in between, i at least expected decent chorus with those solos.

and burma, i really didn't like the obliteratti and onoffon, although i only listened to onoffon once.

My child sex slaves don't like it either.

atsonicpark 05.13.2008 04:46 AM

the breeders were an interesting pixies side project in 1991.

PAULYBEE2656 05.13.2008 08:07 AM

is this the longest thread ever about something very very mediocre......

i still dont like this album and god ive tried to like it but sorry, nope...... it bores me and if that makes me cooler than thou then i apologise for stroking my chin.
