You'll pay a lot more than $1900 for a pc that is as stable as a standard mac.
The ones you buy at your local pc store will give you grey hairs in no time.
You'll experience hardware/software conficts on a daily basis.
Not reliable if you work on a professional level, running a business.

Let's not forget that time is money, and you'll spend a lot of it trying to figure out why your pc keeps hitting a tilt.

That's my own personal opinion. What you do with it is your baby.

Usually I associate "piece of shit" as a means to describe a product that isn't durable.

hardware or software? osx is intrinsically "better" than windows, but xp is at this point tested, tried, true, and rock solid.

for $1900 you'd get a lot better hardware for pc than for mac. mac charges outrageously for the same hard drives, memory stick and video cards other machines use.

So what does Microsoft do, they introduce Vista, and 'force' consumers to buy it by paying manufacturers to sell their pc's with Vista as the default, so you have to pay substantially more to get a pc without Vista.

Microsoft's motto "If it works well, fuck it up and sell it again and again!"

True, but it took ages. Leopard was released 3 months ago, and it's almost cured of all diseases.

I only use LaCie hard drives and macs either have the latest ATI Radeon or NVIDIA Geforce graphics cards, just like most pcs do if you are prepared to pay more. I guess it's just a matter of taste.

dont confuse pcs with windows. pcs run all kinds of software not just windows.

pc does not equate windows

hence i wanna run osx on a pc :)

nicfit 01.29.2008 03:07 PM

I think that pcs are great if you buy exactly the "pieces" you need and put them together by yourself.
Which is actually pretty easy, but not everyone has the confidence to do so. Pcs sold in stores most of the times are a bit messed up (bad/useless softwares come already installed and so on), while I guess a mac is ready to work at its "full potential" out of the box.
I never used a mac, but this pc I "built" a while ago is simply great, stable, no problems whatsoever.
Is it possible to "home-build" a mac? I mean, do they sell components like for pcs?

Tokolosh 01.29.2008 03:20 PM

Sure. <I wouldn't trust this geek though.

Like they say, where there's a will there's a way.

http://lifehacker.com/software/hack-...800-321913.php

hackintosh!!

it's not really special hardware.

the key is to install a patch in the OS to make it believe its on a mac motherboard-- that is all.

with the switch to intel, the posibility is immediate

you could right now probably dualboot OSX in your current macheeeeeen.

woohooooo.

SOME DAY OSX WILL BE LICENSED TO RUN ON THE HARDWARE OF YOUR CHOICE

demand --> supply

anyone can buy a great graphics card for less.

i have a quadra on my vid editing workstation.

thinkpads are coming w/ quadras too.

hurray

ALSO, lacie doesnt make the hard drive. they make the external enclosures. like eizo monitors are repackaged NEC panels.

oh yeah.

who's making internal hard drives? seagate, fujitsu, western digital, samsung...

Tokolosh 01.29.2008 03:51 PM

Ha! I'm not imposing anything and Jobs could drop dead for all I care.

I'm surprised that Linux hasn't been mentioned yet.
Oops.

!@#$%! 01.29.2008 04:08 PM

in fact since the days of intel the mac is a pc-- a shackled pc but a pc no less-- it even runs windows!

all the difference is some fucking proprietary circuit board that allows OSX to run in that machine--its just a hardwired license. but that's easily solved with a patch.

so a mac is a pc. in handcuffs.

yes i use a personal computer, i don't use an intel mac..... i never have to find drivers to get my hardware working, i never have to worry about virues, or trojans, or worms. it is light it is only 12inches. anyone who buys a 17inch laptop should have bought a desktop. i don't have to switch everything off so my audio software runs to its full capacity. it is 1.33ghz with 256mg ram. i can get 56 channels running with about 20 plugins. it is easier to network than a pc particularly in studio setups that i need to interface with. in the end i don't really care what anyone else uses. i like reliability, i like the machine to be small.

ok your particular machine is not an intel pc, it runs on motorola cpus. your next mac will be an intel pc though, because that's what apple sells. an intel box authorized to run BSOD as modified by Apple (BSOD is a great OS by the way, runs a lot of web servers).

i like the 12" powerbook, a friend has one, it's a sweet machine. they discontinued that though. oops! macbook pros are only 15" and 17". and we didn't buy our 17" behemoth! it was given to my wife at her place of work. but anyway...

i bet the thinkpad X series would make a good replacement for your powerbook. it's just 12.1" and UNKILLABLE. i hear it runs OSX like a charm.

i wasn't saying what the spec was, i was saying what the real channel value was with only 1.33ghz and 256mg ram. rewire has nothing to do with it. this was a 56channel recording all instruments with required compressors and reverbs. i barely ever use sequencers, and i know all about rewire.

you want logic and not emotional appeal?

PC - cheaper, runs crappy OS that 90% of the world uses, ugly

Mac - more expensive, runs awesome linux based OS and competitor's crappy OS, beautiful.

HRONGGGG

pc runs OSX too. that's what apple's marketing doesn't want you know. a mac is a pc with a key.

mac is beautiful but FLIMSY CRAP. something made of crackers would be sturdier.

LittlePuppetBoy 01.29.2008 07:49 PM

I'll say it again. I love my Macbook. Bought it in August, and has had zero problems so far.

All computers are physically flimsy. you drop a mac laptop on the floor, it breaks. Drop a windows laptop on the floor, it breaks.

the reality is, macs are fucking awesome machines.

mine looks cool, it runs flawlessly and by gawd, I'd fuck it if I could.
