9/3 Old Springs Pike at Rockwood Music Hall (Secret Show)
There must've been about thirty people there, which is about all Rockwood can hold. It was six so it was still light out and the front of the place is all windows so the lighting was nice. Johnny Gallagher almost passed out. I spoke to the band for a little while afterwards and they wrote little comments on the polaroids I took. |

I saw Maps and Atlases this year and it was fucking fantastic. I still haven't seen Polysics but I'd love to. Melt Banana fucking rules. My favorite concerts this year: Madlib Maps and Atlases Gospel Gossip Modern Life is War |

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hgx_5dWJXJI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQjHagWTHO8&feature=related for free in the art capitol of west texas ![]() outside of this hotel ![]() ![]() yellowtail chardonnay and a couple of corndogs from this place.... ![]() friendly people, free camping, breakfast burritos and a hot cup of coffee in the morning, designer trailer trash, outdoor sculpture, indoor galleries... i had a great time despite the fact that a butterfly flapping it's wings in Peru caused a rainstorm in Jacksonville which caused early afternoon hail in the mountains of west Texas, all of which caused me to only see the encore of the sonic youth show... which in itself was absolutely amazing ... but anyone with access to a recording of the full show should step up and release this outstanding, once in a lifetime gig on dvd and torrent the mother!@#$ out of it... in my opinion. |
this year sucked, when it comes to great show. i didn't go to see any big band. beck played for the police.
snoop dog came, a kid got stabbed. soda stereo reunited, i don't give a fuck. i'm still waiting for the spice girls to come. |
A lot of good ones this year:
Grouper Sunburned Wolf Eyes Motor Ghost GZA Earth Connan and the Mockasins Qui Probably the best was Circle. They were incredible. There's probably a load of other stuff I am forgetting. Deerhoof actually, they were pretty great. |
I only saw two this year Sonic Youth, and Thurston Moore. I had fun at both places.
|
best concerts
the stooges in tel aviv om in jerusalem (they played for five hours it was insane, we left after three) phillip jeck in tel aviv peter brotzmann in tel aviv last week animal collective and eric copeland in boston john butcher and eddie prevost in jerusalem recess rejects in tel aviv- my bands "sisterband" ie we lend eachother gear and most oif us are rweally close friends. they had two sghows. one which ended with semi rotten bannanas all over the place and their singer just vcovered in em. the ther ended with the bartender throwing him off the bar rsulting in him falling on a glass and cutting himself but refusing to stop so the last two sogns were him screaming into the mic whild blood is ppouring all over the room and threatening to kill the bartender. pretty intense..... |

Sonic Youth - Paris
Thurston Moore - Paris Thurston Moore - Dublin Wolf Eyes - Dublin Liars - Dublin Mono - Dublin (I think this was sometime around end/beginning of 2007) Ligtning Bolt - Dublin ( now. was it last year?) - anyway, one of the best gigs ever on the other hand, missed many good shows in Dublin, like: Sonic Youth, Battles, Melvins, Boredoms and Bardo Pond. |

I think there seems to be a direct correlation between the best shows I saw and the best drugs I took. The best single show I saw was AMT in Asheville. I also went a African/world music festival in the mountains. We camped way back in the woods and hardly anyone showed but the artist were awesome. Sierre Leone Nation refugees and Diabate damn near brought tears to my eyes and Farke Toure was excellent as well. I also saw Dan Deacon and Girl Talk which I had to say had a much younger and more hyped audience than almost anything I've ever seen. Melt Banana was good, consistent, and the same as usual with new songs. Bonaroo had some highlites(tortoise, hot chip, Ween, Sasha and Digweed(really fucked up for this one), Ween, and Manu Choa.

Rat Dogg (February 2007) This was the best show of my life, aside from a crowd full of deadheads, the band was fantastic, nothing better then hearing Estimated Prophet go into an authentic reggae rhythm bridge (they used Marley Natural Mystic rhythm), i went insane at that point being the only Ras in the whole venue.... the rest is all reggae
It was a good year for shows here in Los Angeles, seen a show every other week at least, all big time artists, not any backyard boogies.. I could not believe it at all! but here are the highlights Ras Michael and the Sons of Negus (Dec 12, 2007) Abyssinians (August 2007 twice) Burning Spear (Aug 2007 Hollywood Bowl) Bunny Wailer (February 2007) Jr Reid (November 2007) Gladiators (February 2007) Groundation (September 2007) |

you know, that was the first subhumans show I ever missed, and I was actually depressed for days before and after.... I imagine it was as good as they are every year! |

i saw them in like april, was a better show than i expected. |
Quote:
Yeah. I forgot to mention Deacon and GT. Not really a big fan of their albums myself but the show was fun as hell. Oh, I saw Incubus this year. Don't even ask. It was terrible. |
The Fall Of Troy hands down... say what you will, the guy can play some guitar.
|
yes he can.
too bad their last album is a horrible piece of shit. |
Deerhoof with the Dirty Projectors, Tourcoing France. Too good for words.
|
Dirty Projectors are the shit. I saw them open up for Xiu Xiu when they were fucking nobody. The sound guy was being a total fucking dick and the singer was just like "Uh. Fuck you, then." and just kept playing.

Yeah I was pleasantly surprised, especially since some people that had seen them told me that they had been mediocre recently, but they were really great in Sydney, they seemed to be glad to be back too. Perhaps they hadn't expected so much support after over a decade of not being here but the crowd was really into it, and so were they. |
Quote:
Everybody says that, and I can see what they mean as far as it not owning up to their other stuff, but it's not HORRIBLE, imo. |
Either SY playing Daydream Nation or Dex Romweber and his sister opening for Cat Power (she was upstaged).
|
If I have to name just one, then it's definitely Boredoms... easy!
I was so excited to finally see them and yet they were even better than I had imagined. After that it's more difficult, but both NNCK gigs I saw this year were great too for different reasons. Also saw Circle twice this year. I've yet to see them being less than awesome. Sonic Youth doing Daydream Nation 3 times in London was very good as well; especially the final show, but they were all great. Jazkamer in the full Metal Machine lineup was probably the most spectacular thing I saw this year. AMT & The Melting Paraiso UFO - finally got to see them. Shellac; always worth mentioning, because they only play this part of the world like once ever 3-5 years... so roll on 2010. Boris probably in the top 10 too. Also Trad Gras och Stenar, Peter Brotzmann Chicago Tentet, Konono No1, The Ex playing a live soundtrack to A Clockwork Orange theater performance... lots of good stuff. |
Quote:
did they play with brett when you saw them? because when i saw them it was just brian and greg on guitars. Quote:
well, it's good in spots, but my point is that they now sound like simple plan with a very noodly guitar player instead of how they sounded on the first album, like at the drive-in on meth or something. out of context it's ok, but put in perspective of their discography.... |
