finding nobody 11.30.2007 07:47 PM

I'm there

gmku 11.30.2007 07:52 PM

Cool.

gmku 11.30.2007 07:55 PM

So, tonight it's the white album, and I think so far we have:

gmku
RobInst...
finding nobody

Is that correct? Anybody else?

gmku 11.30.2007 07:58 PM

It would be cool to describe our listening circumstances:

1. Anything special about your copy (e.g., WHITE VINYL!!)
2. Headphones, or speakers
3. Where you're listening
4. Temp and weather conditions outside your place

Then we can bullshit after that about the album, either during the listening or at some other date. The important thing is we all listen at the same time.

k-krack 11.30.2007 10:23 PM

On Sunday, I'll be listening in my bed, and going to sleep. I'll make sure I'm up for both sides, though. (Damn school in the morning, so I'll have a late night).

gmku 12.01.2007 12:09 AM

I'm recording my white vinyl copy. Can't believe I never have until now. The "ooos" in the background on "USSR" are soft as velvet!

Headphones.

Tired. Why am I up so late.

It's chilly, about 50 or so outside. Winter in South Carolina.

I've got the old robe on over my clothes, still dressed in jeans, T-shirt, and long-sleeved shirt.

The "aaaahhhs" on Dear Prudence are sweet, too!

_slavo_ 12.01.2007 06:32 AM

Let's play a Sonic Youth album.

...

I'm so lame.

gmku 12.01.2007 09:14 AM

I got started around 0006 EST because it took a while to find the tape I wanted to record the album, too. Then had to wipe the record clean. Plus my dogs pestered me, kept stepping on the line to the headphones, and interfering with me getting established in the comfy chair. But overall it was a great experience. I love this album, and seldom play it straight through anymore, so this was a great way to catch up with it again. It was much like my teenaged years when I spent hours with it.

I did it. I fell asleep during Side 3, though, right in the middle of "Everybody's Got Something to Hide," woke up with the needle clacking in the dead wax, must have been doing that for like 10 minutes. Dammit. Went on to Side 4, though. Then I replayed Side 3.

I was reminded how schizoid this album is. Man, it's all over the place. As usual on every Beatles album, I love the Harrison songs. Why didn't those cunts let him contribute more stuff? His songs are the best. My favorite on the whole white album is "While My Guitar...," but more than any other album, I can actually enjoy the McCartney songs, and every song, even the ones I don't love, have some element to enjoy. The "ooo's" in the background of "Back in the USSR," the "aahhh's" in "Dear Prudence," the part near the end of "Happiness is a Warm Gun" where the band drops out and Lennon sings, "Happiness is a warm yes it is.... (pause)... GU-uh-unnn...." Wow.

I was too tired to pull out the poster and photos. Sometimes I do that and gawk at them for a while like a nerdy 13-year-old.

StevOK 12.01.2007 11:15 AM

I don't think I could listen to stuff so late at night. Don't you guys listen to stuff in the morning/afternoon?

PAULYBEE2656 12.02.2007 09:50 AM

ok, this is wierd. last nite without checking this thread. i sat down and watched the rutles film and then listened to the white album in its entirety before bed.... no shit, i wouldnt lie to you guys!

gmku 12.02.2007 10:11 AM

Changing the world, one album at a time!

I like listening late at night best. The mood is better. It's quiet, dark outsdie, perfect setting for music. Plus fewer distractions. It also helps me get sleepy and go to sleep relaxed.

gmku 12.02.2007 10:17 AM

Tonight it's Unknown Pleaseures, again at 0000 Eastern.

I'll be there with a cup of dark hot chocolate, alone in my corner retreat of the house, surrounded by my books, records, and hi-fi, like a stranded spaceman floating in a tin can far, far above the world.

gmku 12.02.2007 10:30 PM

T minus 90 minutes...

finding nobody 12.02.2007 10:48 PM

I'll be in my dimly lit cluttered room with huge headphones on
Who else is with us?

gmku 12.02.2007 10:53 PM

I'll have my Grados phones on. I haven't decided on beer or hot chocolate. It's not quite chilly enough for hot chocolate tonight.

Looks like it may be just you and me, kid.

gmku 12.02.2007 11:34 PM

gmku 12.02.2007 11:46 PM

A little ahead of you. I'm into Day of the Lords. Love the sound of that guitar!

finding nobody 12.02.2007 11:48 PM

I think we're close enough (considering the timing of the two above posts)

gmku 12.02.2007 11:50 PM

I can feel the vibe of our synchronicity.

finding nobody 12.02.2007 11:52 PM

Ahh yeah. It goes unspoken

There's alot of great texture to this record

gmku 12.02.2007 11:55 PM

The record is deceptively simple, and yet the magic is in the texture, it's true.

gmku 12.03.2007 12:01 AM

About a minute into Side 2

Cantankerous 12.03.2007 12:03 AM

let's do "the name of this band is the talking heads"

gmku 12.03.2007 12:03 AM

such strange beauty... hard to describe...

For sure! When?

Cantankerous 12.03.2007 12:05 AM

well i'm listening to it now. i've been taking solace in it lately because of having to eat dinner with my relatives.

gmku 12.03.2007 12:07 AM

Ha, yeah, that would make me seek comfort in something... I might put it on after JD. Officially, we could make it the next Friday night album, for those of us who don't have a life Friday nights....

Come to think of it, I do have a social engagement this coming Friday. That's weird. I'll have to be sure to save my best pair of jeans. It's my wife's office party, I think.

Cantankerous 12.03.2007 12:08 AM

except it's sunday! oh i loathe sunday dinner. fortunately i was able to jack a bag of haribo gold bears and a zippo from my dad.

finding nobody 12.03.2007 12:08 AM

The bass in Shawdowplay is really kicking my ass

Next Friday? Im there
"Nah dude, I cant hang out on Friday, I've got an internet listening party to go to" -Me

gmku 12.03.2007 12:11 AM

Wilderness is the thing on this album that takes me by surprise.

"Honey, let that guy over there drive you home, I've got an Internet thing..."--gmku

finding nobody 12.03.2007 12:23 AM

Just finished it up. Time to hit the hay.
Gmku, I enjoyed it very much

gmku 12.03.2007 12:23 AM

Ha, ain't that a kick in the head. First time I've played the vinyl all the way through (just found it about a month ago--have only had the CD previously). It has a locked groove in the Side 2 dead wax! How cool.

gmku 12.03.2007 12:24 AM

Hey, I enjoyed it, too, fn. peace...

gmku 12.03.2007 12:30 AM

Well, I'm wishing I could drink another beer but I'd better just mellow out with the Heads or BJM and go to bed.

I'll tell you this, though. Ya want a nice beer buzz and some nice, nice tasting beer. Flying Dog Barley Wine. Wowsers. More than 9 ABV. Packs a wallop, and ya taste the alcohol, but it's also got some nice sweetness, and is very thick in mouthfeel. Good stuff, Maynard.
