Pavement.

The opening bands were Delgados ( ultra boring ) , and The Pastels ( cancelled ).

So they played , and the crowd was very enthusiastic , and the members of Pavement looked very glad ( like , you love us , thank you so much , but you're right cause we're so great ) , and I thought it was boring , and the beer was fucking expensive.

mars volta, a few years ago. they opened for rhcp. what they played wasn't music. it was complete garbage that had no point

SuperCreep 08.05.2008 11:38 AM

Blink-182. My girlfriend dragged me when I was thirteen.

They spent 80% of the show telling fart jokes. The other 20% consisted of Tom Delonge (I think that's his name?) fumbling over his own guitar parts. Dreadful.

I once saw Franz Ferdinand sometime in 2004 having only heard half their tracks on the self-titled. Still naively hopeful of the post-punk revival thing at the time, I was disappointed by how kind of impersonal the experience was. They played all the songs with the same dancey sheen as on the album with smiles to accompany but it felt canned. Then of course the true color of post-punk revivalism was revealed and by then I didn't bother to buy their second album.

Not an abysmal performance but the worst in comparison to everything else I've been to.

I got talked into going to see Hootie and The Blowfish once. I wanted to shoot myself. Not even that I hate them so much (I don't like them, but hate is a strong word) but it was just incredibly boring. I was underage so I couldn't buy alcohol (I managed to get some, as I always did, but not enough to compensate) and it was outside and super hot and I just wanted to leave.

i saw them about 6 years ago, they were just rubbish. i understand they've changed and become a lot better over the years though.

demonrail666 08.05.2008 12:23 PM

Ascension at the Bull and Gate. Most pretentious piece of art-wank I've ever had the misfortune to experience.

the ikara cult 08.05.2008 12:30 PM

Manic Street Preachers at Wembley arena 5 odd years ago doing their greatest hits tour, I was perched right in the back seats next to the came-straight-from-work crowd, the sound was crap, they played 1 Holy Bible song and i had to leave early to get a train.
Oh and Ian Brown was opening, but he was insulting the crowd in an entertaining way.

Derek 08.05.2008 12:37 PM

Klaxons and CSS

ughhhh

Cantankerous 08.05.2008 12:40 PM

bob dylan. the sound was terrible, he didn't touch his guitar not once, all the songs had been reworked in a weird way -- it was just shit. however, merle haggard, who opened for dylan, was fantastic.

gmku 08.05.2008 12:49 PM

A Buddy Holly tribute band in a suburban Mpls bar around 1980. I wanted to puke. The margaritas were good, though.

I was at that gig. Band were shite, but their bass player was HOTTT.

drrrtyboots 08.05.2008 05:59 PM

YACHT playing at this year's SUNY Purchase Culture Shock festival. The epitamy of hipster douchebagery, two assholes hopping up and down singing the WORST lyrics i've ever heard over and over to tracks being played, "bad dance moves" to be cool etc. If they had had an actual band backing them they would have been just as bad but maybe slightly more respectful. I think they're a joke band but they took themselves too seriously for any humor evoking reaction.

The rest of the festival wasn't by any means bad (High Places, Deerhoof were great) but the students there were pretty big assholes. Fucked Up's set got broken up by the cops because of how apeshit the student body went during their performance.

viewtiful_alan 08.05.2008 06:01 PM

Known bands: the new misfits line up has to be some of the biggest shit I've ever seen.. i mean wow I was pissed. I didn't expect much, and tickets were cheap... but man these guys need to go away.

Unknown bands: a local grindcore band called shot to death still makes me cringe.... all their songt itles were mash ups of words that have to do with death, like the classic "bullet obituary"

When was it?
I saw him in 06 or 05 and thought he was quite good.

We go to Montreal with people going to the show, but make it as clear as we possibly can that we are not fucking going into the show. We just wanted to walk around Montreal and take pictures :( But no, we were literally forced into the show and forced to watch a sea of Slipknot shirted people go nuts for a lame ass band.

Aahahah, poor you. A couple of my friends love that band and it's insufferable..

viewtiful_alan 08.05.2008 06:04 PM

That band is so fucking awful... the guitar player really isn't even very good.. but no one seems to understand that concept

Everyneurotic 08.05.2008 06:08 PM

i think wolf eyes now ranks as one of the worst shows i've ever seen, mostly for the high expectations i had.

Dragonforce is a horribly boring obnoxious band, but how do you figure the guitarists aren't that good?

viewtiful_alan 08.05.2008 06:14 PM

I think any guitar player that puts technique above actual sound, style, and song to be horrible.
That means you yngwie malmsteen.

Everyneurotic 08.05.2008 06:15 PM

i love dragonforce because they are one of the most obnoxious bands ever.

viewtiful_alan 08.05.2008 06:17 PM

Well they are that...

acousticrock87 08.05.2008 06:18 PM

Yeah, but one thing to remember about people like Yngwie is that they do have a style, and they're very good at it. That style just happens to be incredibly boring.

They're performers, not composers, but composition is a seperate category. They're incredibly talented at the actual guitar part.

Also, Yngwie plays classical music, which is complex even stylistically. It's just that, again, it's boring.

Everyneurotic 08.05.2008 06:20 PM

anyone can play like yngwie malmsteen if they practiced scales with a metronome every day for like five years and did nothing else.

it's technique and nothing more, really.

that's a shame, usually they are fantastic live. i've seen them be crap too, but it was the venue's fault, not their's.

radarmaker 08.05.2008 06:24 PM

There's 3 gigs that I've walked out of because they were that fucking awful I couldn't bear to stay another minute: Miss Black America, Maximo Park & Art Brut. And I've also seen a really shit Dylan gig. And whoever called the Delgados boring deserves a hefty boot up the ass. So there.

But that's like saying anyone can play like Yo-Yo Ma if they practiced. It may be true, but it still means he's good. And not many people do.

nate young had some trouble with his rig that got sorted out halfway through, but overall, i was waiting to be blown away but it never happened.

it wasn't that bad, i was speaking in accordance to my expectations, which were quite high, i should've just gone there without expecting much. it was pretty laid back, actually.

mike connelly is cool as hell though.

no, because there's other aspects to being good, one of the major ones being "feel" and malmsteen communicates nothing with his precise playing, whether other technically-proficient players might bring their own flavour while being impeccable at the same time.

Toilet & Bowels 08.05.2008 06:43 PM

i saw this news clip the other day about a 13 year old kid who is like ywingwe junior and he was making £70/hour from busking, but to my ear his playing had no feeling whatsoever and was straight out of the guitar textbook.

Everyneurotic 08.05.2008 06:47 PM

ha...i guess, i would have made a pretty dime had i stuck to the two hour practice sessions of sweep picking.

acousticrock87 08.05.2008 06:50 PM

I'm not saying he's the best guitarist by any means, or that accuracy and technical skill are the most important parts of playing. I just don't think it's valid to say he's "not a good guitarist".

Everyneurotic 08.05.2008 06:52 PM

he's technically a good player, but hardly great or unique, which is why i said anyone could play like him if they practiced as hard as he does.

acousticrock87 08.05.2008 06:56 PM

Haha. I think we're just talking about different aspects of guitar playing, but are mostly in agreement on both.

atsonicpark 08.05.2008 08:11 PM

Dragonforce make really good music... the vocals are pretty much the only part of the band that is kind of irritating, and their whole concept is ridiculous but if you actually focus on the music itself it's quite consistently amazing.

Worst show I saw was probably Q and Not U right after (like 2 days after) they lost their bass player.. they were playing all these old songs with either no bass or missing a guitar line and lemme tell you.. you do not want to hear a Q and Not U song with no bass, and the most interesting part of that band to me was the 2 guitars. They also kept playing all these new songs that no one liked, and on the old songs their fans randomly clapped and yelled "WHOO" at random parts. At the time it seemed kinda fun and the venue was really cool but the show itself sucked.

on 4/20 actually, even though i was about as stoned as you could get, it was to date the shittiest show out of probably hundreds of shows i have ever seen in my life.
